Dude. I am LATE to the party here, but as a fiber artist who was hired to teach both fiber AND printmaking classes, these videos have been LIFE SAVING in my lesson planning. Thank you for keeping these up on KZbin for over a decade. Awesome explanations that not only taught me but will help me teach others -- and maybe I'll even use them in class. :)

i always like Catspit's extra explanations of why a process is done in a certain way eg. drying screen face down so emulsion becomes thicker on that side due to gravity.

Thank you very much! I appreciate the support greatly. You’re welcome and I’m glad I could help out. Yes, I believe a 1/1 coat with a pass on the ink well side and the substrate side will encapsulate the mesh with emulsion resulting in better emulsion to mesh adhesion. It will also give you a thicker stencil if you do the substrate side first and the inkwell side last. Then store them substrate side down parallel to the ground. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠

You can use any room with subdued light. The bathroom, a large closet or the kitchen in the evening. As for drying, you could do it late at night and store in a closet or you could make a drying case from 2X4s and plywood. Just make sure the case has enough ventilation for the emulsion to dry properly.

We screen printers work in some interesting ways. I can't work on my knees like you but I too rig stuff up. I bought a little air compressor, I spray my screens with it after shooting jobs out. Another shop recommended it to me and it keeps the stencil from getting any unwanted blocking when drying.

@porsenora This could be under exposure or poor emulsion to mesh adhesion. Under exposure can cause the emulsion to become saturated with water prematurely in the washout booth. That will cause you to easily reuse parts of your stencil and bubbling as well. Poor mesh adhesion can also cause bubbling and it could be a combination of these. Try prepping your screens better before coating them with emulsion and try increasing your exposure time a bit. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

If you want to print posters, all you need to change is your ink. I think an air dry water based ink would work well on heavy paper stock. Not sure what you mean by instant emulsion. If you mean pre- sensitized, that is what I use. Your emulsion may be washing off for any of a number of reasons. Maybe under cured? Or having trouble adhering to a dirty screen? Or is it not mixed properly or old? It is very difficult to diagnose these problems without seeing what is going on.

I like watching your videos, i even bought the Ranar 1 station, 4 color screen press, i bought 4 new 200 mesh screens, with the new scoop coater, i began coating the screens with “PC 787 Universal Photopolymer Emulsion”. It is violet in colour. Print side first, then squeegee side last. This morning, under dark room conditions, seemed like dried up drips on the print side formed while in drying cabinet , i put on too thick i believe. Thinking the other half of screen was okay, i tried to step expose the other half with a halftone film positive image. I washed the screen everything washed away! Lol. What do you suggest? I made six 15 second step exposures. It’s been a long time since doing this.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 7 жыл бұрын
It could be that there is not enough ventilation for the humidity to escape the box. That can cause what you described as well. If the photopolymer emulsion washed out completely then you exposure light may not have enough UV light to cure it unless you do a very long exposure. You may need to work in minutes instead of seconds depending on what you are using to expose screens. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

+TRHZ Designs If the water based ink dried in the mesh it could be ruined. You could try a haze remover with a pressure washer to see if it will push out of the mesh. @CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 7 жыл бұрын
Emulsion is pretty benign when used properly. But you cannot allow children to play with it or be able to ingest it. It's just not appropriate. Handle it like any other household chemical you wouldn't want your kids to get into. But no, you don't necessarily need gloves or a mask unless you are super sensitive to something in it. I've never seen anyone wear any mask with emulsion though. It does not stink or give off any vapors. I hope that helps out. Thanks for watching! Usually a thinner stencil will be easier to expose and washout. The more emulsion you coat on the screen, the more time it will take to expose and the more difficult it will be to washout. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

i've always thought that would be the case, yet once someone gets it in their head it's hard to dislodge that notion. i actually mentioned this to her the other day and her reaction was, 'huh.' so, the next time *i* make screens that i don't intend on her getting her hands on, i'm going to back off the emulsion and see what happens! thanks! :)

In the more info sidebar for every how to video I make there is a glossary of terms. The glossary of terms for my videos is all in one place on my website too. There are also articles on screen printing as well as tips and advice. This section of my website will be changing and growing as I find new and useful educational items for it. Go to my channel page and click the link for my WEBSITE in the channel description area. Then click the Tips & Advice or KZbin Glossary tabs...

@OldDirtyRetard I really don’t know what the cheapest emulsion on the market is. And as far as shipping to the U.K. It wouldn’t be economically practical I think for just a little emulsion. The shipping is likely to cost more than the emulsion. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠

I really enjoyed this, would you please rename the vids in order? Part 1,2,3 etc... so we don't have to search around and hope we get the process in the correct order. It would really help us, and you will get more views. Thanks, man. ;-)

how many screens can you cover with 1 gallon?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 9 жыл бұрын
David Sowell It can vary depending on how much emulsion you sue per screen but it will be a lot. A gallon will do several dozen screens or more. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

Im glad you enjoy my videos and find them useful. The names of the videos tell you what you will learn about. I try to make them and post them in a logical sequential order. These videos are very hard to make, (I do them by myself), and I try to make each one independent of the others so that you may gain something useful in one video. The first video, How To Screen Print: The Process Explained, contains the sequence of the entire process. Thanks for the comment!

why are emultions different colors
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 9 жыл бұрын
+Art Barnett I think so people will ask me that very question..... lol ;) Actually there are no reasons other than the maker. Each manufacturer uses a different dye for their emulsions. The emulsion color has nothing to do with anything except who makes it. And even then they all use red for instance and blue. So don't worry about the color unless it is difficult to reclaim or it stains the mesh. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
