An Observational Approach to the Portrait in Clay is a comprehensive course in modeling a three-quarter life-size portrait in clay. You will learn how to build your armature, take measurements of your model, block-in the facial features, hair, and neck, and how to build relationships between them. David will also cover the materials and tools he uses, and demonstrate his finishing techniques.
In this free lesson, David introduces his modeling approach, shows how to build an armature, measure a model, and apply those measurements to the portrait. He also covers the measuring tools, including calipers, dividers, and nails.

Hello, I wanted to tell you that I love this video and if you have more lol I’ll get to them also…. I’m a retired Department of defense electrical engineer , I was forced into retirement I’m 59, a disabling auto accident … so I have always been good with a pencil sculpting carving , but I never learned from someone that could share the things a person can show you as you are doing for me here , thank you!

Very impressive good course, well explained, i love it! Still, never having work with oil clay myself, is that mean that the base and metal structure have to remain (inside the sculpture) untill the sculpture dismantling after, for example, molding it? Thanks again for your good instructions! A+

Thanks for the video. I've learned a lot from it! You took measurements from one side of the head. But because of a human face is not totally symmetrical I would suggest that it's important to take measurements of the both sides.

Isn't the distance from the ATN to nosetip for example, different on both sides of the head? If one of your ears is set further back there will be a longer distance.
@musashidanmcgrath
@musashidanmcgrath 3 жыл бұрын
Human measurement are rarely ever going to be perfectly symmetrical. It's up to the artist to build this asymmetry into the portrait, but is for more advanced sculptors with a solid anatomical knowledge. Sculpting symmetrically is good technical practice.

Is this clay better than the monster clay? I don’t like at all the oily texture of most plastelines
@NewMastersAcademyorgNMA

With Clay it's more about advantages and disadvantages. For scale portrait you're probably better off using a plastilina like this over Monster.

Stelios Kapet there’s a way to restore a water based piece if it gets too dry. It involves us wing wet cloths to slowly get it damp. You don’t want to do it too quickly.

This is a good lesson. But the explanation and his understanding of oil and water based clays differences are just idiotic. It’s 100% different materials, and even the same word “clay” is used only in English, oil based is Plasticine / Plastiline. Gives a really strange feeling of the professional level.

Oil and water are simply what is added to the mud so that it is easily workable. They are both truly Clay.
