Its really not difficult to sculpt your own custom miniature bases using Milliput. In this episode I demonstrate just how easy it is with some Wizkids spiders that really needed some extra effort to get from package to table ready.

I have used milliput since the mid 1980's but only for filling and repairs, you have showed me I have wasted all those years and could of been sculpting figures, and also you have showed how to stop the problem of tacky milliput, clever use of water, never thought of that, many thanks for the tips, you are awesome, keep up the good work.....

For basing I would recommend 2 part plumbers epoxy, much much cheaper think I paid about 3 bucks for roughly the same amount as milliput. Only downside is it cures in about 5 min though to me that's a upside

Spiders look great! Miliput is great for this kind of stuff. Easier than a small rock to drill through. Easy to sculpt. I think a lot of people would have just skipped the bases for the spiders, but those people also would have missed out on the cool action poses! These things look like they are ready to jump up and crawl onto the adventurers. Speaking of having no base...a Kids in the Hall reference for you: "...The Doors had no bass. But don't let that scare you, my friend. Let that liberate you! Viva la Doors!"

Yea, in retrospect these spiders are one of the few minis that would actually work well with no base at all. But I'm a sucker for continuity with my minis. PS I am always up for a Kids in the Hall reference, one of my all time favourites.

I have been holding onto some milliput from about 6 months ago and never got around to using it before I picked up my 3D printer. Since I have access to the full plethora of STL files for D&D, now might be a great time to start printing some bases using that Milliput. Never considered basing the miniatures other than dead center either, so I will be trying that.

I just painted this exact spider set last week and noticed the same problem. I managed to superglue the tips of the legs to the 1” round reaper bases. They seem pretty solid, but if they come loose, I’ll keep this in mind.

Something i have always done on my mini bases is to paint the rim of the base a different color for each mini. it makes keeping track of HP and initiative for each spider/goblin or any other similar minis it doesn't distract from the look of the mini but makes DMing an encounter much easier, i also fill the bottom of the plastic bases with hot glue, it adds some weight and traction to the mini
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
I used to mark the rims with pips or Roman numerals for this.....then I switched my DM style to using HP Pools, and minion rules so I don’t have to track which hit points land on specific low level monsters.

@LNCNMN13

How do you keep your miniatures (and other projects) from frosting over in the areas where you are dabbing superglue (CA)? Is the acrylic paint somehow a buffer to the CA and prevents white frosting? I've noticed extensive frosting when superglue is bonding a bare plastic base and model together (no base coat or top coat of paint; direct plastic-on plastic only). Do you cover frosting (if any) with touch ups of paint? Beautiful work and fantastic channel. Thank you for inspiring!

Hi Jeremy! What about using a tiny chunk of XPS foam and maybe some sand for the same effect on these min bases? Your results are great though. Btw I love your approach of keeping mini painting at a "ready for play level". It shows how cool our minis can be without spending tens of hours on them.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
You can do that, I did that technique when I first started. It works, just not as nicely and not nearly as durable. Not sure pinning to foam is a great idea though. It would eventually get screwed up.

Oh that could solve my problem. I printed out some 'Mini's (13 cm resin 3D Figurines) and most of them stand fine on their baseplates. But two are to heavy on one side and fall over. Glue is not strng enough to hold them. I will make a little step for their feet and glue them on the step. Hope it will work out.

Hey man. Have you ever thought about sculpting your own minis? I was thinking about doing it myself as an upcoming project (when and if I have the time). If they were sculpted with clay I suppose a mould could be made of them as well, and then more ones could be made of liquid PVC or Metal.

Hard to tell without the kit in hand, but it looks like the one spider has the legs more inward so all eight would fit on the base, while the other two seem like you are supposed to glue them belly to rubble pile with the legs hanging over the base.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
I think that was the intent maybe, I just wouldn't trust gluing the legs straight to the bases, the point of contact would be too small.

Is there any reason not to use Green Stuff for crafting bases? Is it just because Milliput is a lot softer before it cures?
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Epithet are fine. I just find milliliter easier to work with for this sort of thing as it’s softer and acts more like a standard clay. Also it’s cheaper for me to get so I reserve green stuff for places where I prefer it’s properties.

Awesome man,can I use DAS for this? Having trouble finding miliput here in Brazil
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
You can try....DAS is airdry, so it shrinks and can crack. It's also not very adhesive so you may need to mix in some PVA. Milliput, like Green Stuff, is a two part epoxy putty. If you can't find those brands go to your hardware store and look in the glue section, there are a variety of companies that make two part epoxy putties usually used to fix broken items and leaks.

Why do figures that can stand on their own needs bases at all?
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
They don’t NEED it. But here’s the reasons you may want it. 1. Aesthetics 2. Movement rules in most tabletop games are measured from the base. 3. The occupied space of a creature in most games is designated by standardized base sizes. 4. So your collection has a cohesive look. 5. Dynamic poses 6. Making bases is fun, especially if you enjoy making terrain So it’s all preference. My preference is to have the same base on all my minis.
