Who's going to buy a swage plier to clamp one terminal end loop? I'm using two swages and a punch and hammer. for my truck winch wire replacement. works a treat. Drill a hole in the join of two thick peices of steel slightly larger dia than the wire to clamp and hammer the swages.

Totally get where you're coming from about the hassle, but safety is super important when you're towing or winching. While a lot of folks like the security and termination efficiency of swaged eye splices for winch wire ropes, if you're just doing a one-time job, using wire rope clips can be a great alternative. They're easy to use and still handle the load safely. See this video for more wire rope clip information: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnzXZ56prKp0jtE

Thank you so much for making this very informative video. I have a vinyl coated stainless steel rope that has diameter of 1/16 bare wire and 3/32 diameter coated. And I bought sleeves for 3/32 diameter. But now, I learned that I should cut the vinyl before putting on the sleeve. Is it okay to still use the 3/32 sleeve since it will anyway flatten upon swaging?

How much weaker is the connection if the vinyl is left on? What percentage range would you estimate? I only need around 15% of the working load for my application but I did it over the vinyl. 1/8" cable
@E-rigging
@E-rigging 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. Vinyl coating should always be stripped prior to the swage since the vinyl can loosen and slip out. We've seen lots of swage failures over the years due to leaving the vinyl coating on. So, in your case, we recommend that the cable assembly be replaced. Thanks for the comment and good luck with your project!

Actually The Chicago Flyhouse Inc tested double sleeve 4:33 . turns out it's a waste of time. ADDING SLEEVES DOES NOT INCREASE JOINT STRENGTH. Firstly, in order to be able to perfectly distribute stress force on sleeves you should swage them when wire is under stress(higher than human force) which is unattainable when you work alone and without pulling machines. usually the force distribution is not even 1/10 in most cases(ideal would be 50/50). my guess is that under the stress 1 of the sleeves snaps before dead wire end side starts sliding and then instantly the same force is applied to another sleeve which also gets destroyes (if both sleeves are identical of course) , while in case of standard wire rope clips that does not happen: when 1 clip friction force is less than the load then the dead end wire starts sliding activating other clip friction nad adding it up to ideal 50/50 force distribution, so the joint holds. So the rigidity of the sleeve is its limit. Please, tell me I am wrong.

🗜🛠 I'm wondering if anyone's found crimping dies with the round bite(s) shown here, for the huge 11 ton hydraulic crimpers? I see eRigging has a 5 ton hyd crimper tool stating to use the #10 die, which appears to be a round bite, but I don't need another tool just the dies. Everywhere I look I see hexagonal bites for electric lugs. I suppose if there's nothing premade I could try making a few sizes from steel flat bar.

@E-rigging

People have come up with lots of other incorrect ways to smash these fittings with hammers or vises, but those methods may fatigue the aluminum sleeve in a way that will promote cracking and failing. Using any other method than an appropriate tool is not recommended as there is no consistency in their load holding ability or fatigue life.

5:00 According to MS51844 zinc plated copper sleeves should be used on steel cable and tin plated copper or stainless steel sleeves should be used on stainless steel cable (CRES).
@E-rigging
@E-rigging 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, @catranger01, MS51844 does call for Tin plated copper sleeves when using stainless steel cable because Tin does have a slightly less corrosive reaction than Zinc when in contact with stainless steel. However, stainless steel cable swaged with zinc plated copper sleeves are time tested in both land-based and marine applications worldwide, and do satisfy loading holding and corrosion resistance standards for many typical applications. Strict adherence to coating types outlined in the government standard MS51844 is critical for regulated applications such as airplane manufacturing and military contracts. These fittings shouldn’t be used for overhead lifting applications. It is always recommended to get a qualified person to design and approve your application before using rigging assemblies. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments, Have a great day!

Thanks for the added detail on this specific topic. I had the same question but now I'm still wondering if I can use plain copper on stainless wire rope, just because they're easier to find. Any experience with that combination? Do aluminum sleeves have any place in this discussion? My application is not critical but I tend to try to do things perfect even when it doesn't matter... Thank you!

Adding another sleeve will not reliably add to termination efficiency. The load will be held almost exclusively by 1 of the 2 sleeves, then it will shear and the same load will be held by the other sleeve. Depending on how tensioned the spacing is between the 2 sleeves during assembly, it may shock load the second sleeve causing immediate failure after the first one fails.
