Thank you so much for putting this together! Just have a few questions: 1) Would you say this is pretty safe? Just makes me a tad nervous opening ports to my NAS. 2) Is 500Gb internet up/down fast enough to host a portfolio site that gets say 50 visits per day? 3) Is a DS718+ a decent NAS for hosting? I know there are a lot of factors, so it may be difficult to answer, as everyones needs are different 😋

What are some of the best practices for self-hosted synology WordPress security? Seems like with the plugins and open source dev ecosystem these are very hard to lock down. Can we put it in a sandbox where even when it gets malware everything else is 100% unaffected?

like, even with Cloudflare to our synology, the file system would be the same filesystem as any wordpress malware. I know this malware can spread throughout your folders to other websites and stuff. So I would prefer not to self host unless secure container. the option to put the web scripts in Docker, which you said you havn't played around with yet, would still leave the web Service and the actual site files outside of docker it seems. Http user should be only user with permissions to those folders, but is that sufficient security? I heard you say you can host a virtual DSM in a container/docker? Is that the best way to sandbox a synology wordpress or is it easy to install all wordpress in docker?

Your info about configuring DDNS via Synology and setting up a CNAME is very good. I used to use my UDM Pro in combination with Namecheap Advanced DNS. But now I only use my domain registration plus a CNAME record. This saves cost for a Namecheap subscription.

Thanks for this super helpful. I did encounter two issues tho, one I overcame. The other basically stopped everything :-(. The first was checking the HSTS setting in the Web Portal configuration. If I set this the site ran no problem, but I couldn't enter admin mode (the WP dashboard), turning this off made it all work fine. The other issue (I still haven't figured out) is I can get the whole WP site running, but if I try to modify any pages, I get a error telling me it can't write the changes back - that I'm disconnected! I'm guessing this is a rights issue somewhere but tried everything to fix it all to no avail! The reason I wanted to do this was to get my web site out of the root folder, it works there with CloudFlare tunnels, but I thought your approach was a little more elegant and probably what we are supposed to do, but I just can't get it working. I will give it a few day's and probably try again, maybe I missed a step :) - thanks anyway.

OK Figured it out (for anyone else with the same problem). My issues was a REST API issue and caused because both my Wordpress site URL and my Site URL were set to https. Now this should be ok, but when I changed the WordPress URL to http, everything worked. I have no idea why this is happening, but when you go to the site, it uses the Site URL which is still HTTPS, so you are still secure. Anyway, everything is now working. (By the way these settings are in the Wordpress dashboard under Settings and General)

Went through all of this to the tee, including the ssl certificate video (on 2 sites). SSL doesn't work, and WP doesn't show up. I get a page that says synology web station is installed, but nothing to do with wordpress. My Synology DDNS does go to my nas (SSL works) but my sites (which are properly sent to that URL via CNAME) show as insecure. So no SSL into nas with custom URL and no WP.

This is a great step-by-step guide and yet when I come to try and access the site from a browser I only get to the "Your website is not set up yet" screen which I assume is the web portal default.This suggests that most of the setup is fine except the last step but I can't for the life of me figure out where I've gone wrong. Has anyone had a similar problem and then a Eureka moment?

You need a DNS record too! You might have baby a public up and dns to it!

I think I followed all the steps completely, however, I cannot seem to find the wordpress installation page, the site is SSL secured through cloudflare, but instead of a wp installation page, I get a synology your website has not been setup yet placeholder. It says webstation has been enabled.

Hello, followed your instructions and got the website up and running but still can't get rid of this FTP message when I try and install any themes. Confirmed all the firewalls are turned off on the router and included the define('FS_Method','direct') without success. Anywhere else you might recommend I look that could be generating this need for FTP uploads?

Suggestion: (at your own risk of course) 1. Install WPvivid Backup plugin on current WP on old NAS and on fresh WP on new NAS. 2. Make backup and export on current. 3. Import on fresh WP and restore. Doesn't hurt the current WP and might actually work as long as you make sure that MariaDB on fresh WP uses same credentials.

Yeah I think they're really cheap just a few bucks minimum. I recommend using a cloud flare tunnel, no ip messing and easy subdomain additions.

setup your internal DNS server point to your home website. Most cases your modem/router act as DNS where you would do that DNS configuration.
