How do you drive visitors to the directory. Do you use paid ads as ranking a directory in search results, even locally, is not quick or easy. Businesses want to see that there is traffic to the directory otherwise they are wasting their money.

yea this was my first question too. I think its best to build the site (free listings so the consumer can find what they are looking for) and then once established, charge for featured ads.

I disagree about using a Gmail address, looks amateur and raises a flag for me. Having your own email address is a tiny investment that seperates you from the amateurs. Otherwise some good info here.
