Damn, missed this years ago as well. Best vid on this job. With these yami big motors it is correct that I don't need it in forward neutral is okay

Love your videos. Question on my Yamaha F90TLR 2010. I has oil leaking out of my prop area last year and replaced the 2 seals and ran a pressure check prior to putting it back in a freshwater lake for the year. I also replaced my water pump impeller too. Unfortunately I pulled the motor and had a LOT of water in the oil again. I did not change the seals on the main shaft below the water pump and was wondering if the water could have entered the motor from this area? I am wanting to repair it correctly this year…any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks for this video. All also have you serviced from the prop side? If so do you have a video?

told at yamaha tech school not to put grease on the plastic bush above the impeller,needs to be clean so the metal bush that goes over the top can grip onto it and compress the wave washer,putting grease every where like that is not going to anything as the water pressure from the impeller just washes it away

I’m glad I found your channel and thanks for the videos. Just wanted to know, when you clean the housing, can you use a soft wire brush instead of a blade?

I’ve found Grease on the top of the shift shaft is a nightmare, shift actuator doesn’t like it at all
@jonathanodell-f5sАй бұрын
I just did all this on a Yamaha 40 ELRP. The drive shaft is much harder to turn now. If I back off the bolts on the impeller housing it turns easier. I feel like that is not right. How do I fix this?
@BornAgainBoatingАй бұрын
Well it depends on how tight it is, but it is going to be tighter when you turn it because you are fitting the resistance of turning the dry impeller vanes in the housing so when you tighten it up the rubber is compacted. It needs to be tight because that is what makes it build the water pressure and suction and pressure to move the water. :)

For better or worse I torqued the impeller housing to 10nm… I cannot turn the shaft with just two fingers now but can turn it easily with my whole hand…

Hi Group, love your video's thanks so much. I'm a Member of the Aux Coast Guard here in Victoria BC, Canada we have 2 RIB's one with twin 2017 250 Yamaha's and the other with twin 2007 Yamaha's. Our RIB with the 2017 Yamaha appears to have an oil/water leak in the lower unit on the Port motor. The reason I've come to that conclusion is while performing an Inspection last week I started the motors and an oil sheen developed behind the Vessel, it appears to be coming from the Port motor and when I flushed the motors it was really noticeable coming out of one of the drains on the Port side? My question is due to the COVID crisis we are just not able to get the Vessel in for service and a little concerned about additional damage leaving it in the water, the Vessel has been taken out of service so we are not responding with it. Any suggestions on what we could do (drain the oil) while the vessel is in the water? Thanks, Jim
@BornAgainBoating4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, I understand the concern and the trouble! Thank you for all your support! Check to make sure the engine has the right amount of oil in it, then start and run it. With the engine running, look underneath the belly pan, towards the front of the engine, above the engine mounting bracket. You will see a little space where you can see the driveshaft spinning. What you can do is look in there with it running and see if you can see oil coming out. If you do see the oil coming from there. Then you'll need to change the oil pump and put a speedy sleeve in it. That should fix it! Hope this helps in diagnosing the issue.

I scratched and nicked the out side of the carrier housing in the vice while trying to get seals out. Is it still ok? The inside is fine...
@BornAgainBoating4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you just scratched the paint, if so, then yeah, it's just cosmetic :)

After doing a full service on the lower unit is there a “break in” requirement or can you just hit the water like normal?

Do you need to pull up on the shaft ? Mine does not seem to have any play . 2005 f225

If you don't have any play that's fine, don't worry about. This was off a two stroke engine too so it's a little different.

Do you find it unnecessary to put a thin layer of grease inside the impeller cup?
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
For me, I put a lot of grease on before putting the keyway in, then I also grease up the stuff that goes on top of the impeller, as well as the water pump housing pins. So there's plenty of grease on everything by the time I put the cup and housing on that I don't grease up the impeller cup. It's personal preference though, I know a lot of people that grease up the impeller and then put the housing on, so it's like greasing the cup. It doesn't hurt anything if you do!

these salt water engines look like crap when your pulling them apart. I'm liking my freshwater engine. Pulled my engine apart for general maintenance, and it's nice and clean. How would these look if they are flushed with fresh water? Does anyone do this , that are trailering them and pulling out and flushing them? Maybe it's the 30 yrs of maintenance and knowing that a little bit of preventive maintenance goes a real long way.

I would have taken the time to clean things up a bit better. The lower unit lives in a very difficult environment and a clean lower unit is a happier lower unit!
