It's the time to try replacing the bearings in your freehub. |
Subscribe to Cycling Weekly here: kzbin.info...
The cassette body is a part of the bike that takes a lot of stress as you ride, so it’s worthwhile to know how to service it and replace the bearings on which it runs, to keep your expensive wheels turning sweetly. With Campagnolo and Fulcrum wheels being made by the same company, they share many of their parts.
Servicing your freehub body is quite Upper Division and needs a few tools:
17mm spanner
5mm Allen key
Hammer and punch
Internal circlip pliers
Grease and a grease gun
Paper towels
A pack of Fulcrum or Campagnolo replacement bearings
A bearing press
The last of these will cost around £60. But it will set you up to sort out other bearings, like press fit bottom brackets and headsets too.
The Fulcrum bearings have the part number RS-011, while the equivalent Campagnolo part is FH-BUU004.
Taking apart your freehub is also an opportunity to check the main wheel bearings for wear and potential replacement. Don’t use degreaser on anything until you’ve disassembled the freehub though, as you can potentially wash the grease out of the wheel bearings.
You need to punch out the two bearings in the freehub, which are to be replaced and clean everything. Then you can fit the replacement bearings using the bearing press to make sure that they are pushed in straight.
Don’t forget to grease everything as you go.
You can then refit the pawls and spring, then grease the ratchet ring and axle before refitting the freehub body and refitting the spacer and lockring.

This definitely answered my questions. I had almost gotten to the "whacking it with the hammer" part when he explained that the freehub body and axle flats have to align to get the freehub off. That certainly made it a lot easier.

I have Campagnolo Bullet 50s with steel bearings, and am curious how often I should service my bearings. I very rarely ride in the rain, and usually wipe my bike after every ride(2-3 times a week at 50km each ride) instead of washing it (about once a month). I have put 5000km on them in 1 year of owning them.

Would it not be better to use a sliver of anti seize/copper slip on the axle when putting the freehub body back and side of the bearings before putting them in?Good grease is fine for when you need lubrication but anti seize is better for its particular job of stopping stuff from getting stuck in. Also whats the point in adding more grease to the bearing race when its a sealed bearing anyways, defeats the object of a sealed bearing and introduces more friction with no gain, or do you think that grease on the race makes the bearing more weatherproof?

Personally I use a proper bearing extracter tool of the appropriate size to extract the bearings so they are knocked out square. If you use a single punch in just one place, as shown, there is a danger of the bearing scraping the side of the free hub body as it is knocked out. The tightening torque for the free hub locking nut is 15nm......you do not want this to come loose.
@chriswaters9267
@chriswaters9267 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you’ll get a bearing extractor to engage here. The floating sleeve inside the freehub prevents this.

Fantastic video! Although, apropos of your remark at 6:20 that it is pointless to have the seals on the inside ... I am guessing that is why 95% of your audience is here. Water gets in there somehow, and absolutely wrecks the bearings. I replaced mine with double-sealed bearings.

Here's a problem for you. I have Fulcrum Racing Zero wheels from year 2007 (2005...2009 that famous full red version). C clip in the freehub of those old wheels is totally different kind as you have in your video. There are no small holes in the ends of the c clip where you could apply your pliers. This c clip is quite similar to the one used in the right half axle of Campagnolo's Ultra Torque Bottom Bracket. So how do you remove such a c clip from the freehub body?

Can anyone elaborate about the axel and freehub having flats on them? Is this consistent across all Fulcrum wheelsets? I’m new to Fukcrum and didn’t receive the owners manual or similar specifics when I purchased my Fulcrum Racing Zeros from previous owner. Ran into some issues with play/wiggle in the cassette, so I took it to a reputable local shop, but they’re telling me that something is wrong because the axel has flat spots on it instead of being perfectly round

I've got Fulcrum Racing 5 LG Disc wheels and tried to follow this video. However, at 2:04 it mentions to use a 5mm hex wrench inside the axle to loosen it from the freehub. My axle just has a circular whole through the center, nothing for a hex wrench to fit into. I see where to attach the spanner on the outside, but there doesn't seem to be anything to hold the axle in place while turning the spanner.

I did get past it. I think I just turned the spanner on the outside and held the other end in place with my fingers and surprisingly it worked. I was expecting a lot more resistance. In the end, though, I found that getting the inner bearing out of the hub was impossible (outer bearing was easy). I soaked it in PB Blaster for a day then used a bearing removal tool, but it was still so lodged in there that the bearing innards broke out of it, with the outer bearing ring still firmly buried in the freehub. So I decided I needed to instead replace the freehub, but found it difficult to determine which freehub I needed. I emailed Campagnolo about this and the bearing being stuck in the freehub and they responded with this: "If you are looking for a Shimano/SRAM freehub body then yes FH-BUU015x1 is the correct part number for your Fulcrum Racing 5 LG wheelset. And just so you know even we do not replace freehub bearings as it is extremely difficult." I ended up ordering the freehub from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DHGSS6M/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It never ceases to amaze me that professional-grade bicycle mechanics can't pronounce Campagnolo properly. I'll let the English flat A sound slide (should be more of the AH sound), but there is no hard G sound! The Italian GN blend sounds like NY, hence the brand should really be pronounced cahm-pahn-YO-lo.
