Excellent advice, possibly the best video on bass sound I've seen on KZbin. Something I find useful when you need a change in sound but can't adjust the EQ, maybe for one part of a song, is to think about which part of your finger you're plucking with. If you drop your wrist slightly towards the body of the bass you pluck with more meat, and get a warmer, fatter sound. Lift the wrist away from the body, you pick with the finger tips, with more reinforcement from the nail, and get more attack
@b1akn3ss933 жыл бұрын
So basically you mean is "accent the notes"
@Murdo21123 жыл бұрын
@@b1akn3ss93 No. Accenting the notes would be a temporary thing, to make certain notes stand out, to imply an extra little rhythm over the main rhythm. What I'm talking about is using the way you hold your hand, and which part of the finger tip you use, in order to get a different sound, maybe for a particular passage, maybe for a whole song, without touching any controls, either one the bass or the amp.

Step number one... Get your guitar player to roll off the bass EQ about 3 numbers on his amp when he is playing live. Beefy bass EQ on the guitar is fine for playing or rehearsing without the band. But too much Bass EQ on stage will only make you the bass player have to complete for the same bass frequency. This is the absolute best thing to do to improve your on-stage sound. All guitar players do it because they want to have their "Tone"... Try it and see how loud your bass volume is when he rolls off the bass EQ on his amp about 3 numbers. It will make your stage mix much better and every instrument on the stage will be heard more clearly. Your vocalist will have an easier time hearing themselves sing without yelling to compensate for the excessive low end frequency battle. Try it. It really works great.

Bass Mid and High EQ settings should be set around 10 o'clock. Adjust your pre and post gain to the correct volume for the room and then adjust your EQ settings to get your desired tone. Try to keep between 10 O'clock and no higher than 2 O'clock. You will get more clean power from your amp and never be too loud. Most important for great live stage sound is .. Get your guitar player to roll off his bass EQ setting knob down from #6 or #7, to #3 or #4. Guitar players tend to have too much bass EQ that competes with your bass frequency. He can add bass when needed by using his tone knobs and pickup switch.

Is the eq response flat on that amp with everything at 12 o'clock? Or is there internal voicing? The amp has a very "active" sound, especially in the high end in this recording. Very nice fluid playing and showing how to not just get different tones but how/when to actually use them.
@psychlyeslg3 жыл бұрын
I just want to say that there some blokes that think that you mustn't use treble on a bass. The mid knob broke on our amp and the treble is the line that can separate the drum nad the bass. The literally try to set the bass with just the bass at 10, what's the point in having Eq micing if you're not gonna even use it.

Set all your EQ settings to around #4 or 11 O'clock. Dial in your desired Pre/Post volume for the room. Then adjust your Bass, Mid-range and Highs to the desired tone. Staying under or around 2 O'clock on your EQ tone settings will allow you to get more clean power from your amp without being too loud.
@pretoshohmoofcguy65238 жыл бұрын
I personally zero out my eq and set my tones to 0 on my bass head. Not in the + or -. I find that the manufacturer when building the amp knows the sweet spot (not too much and not too little in the middle of the amp because they know what they're doing. The very same way that he zeroed out his Treble, Mid and Bass on his instrument. That is what I call 'The Goldilocks Zone.' It lets everything cut through.

Just turn the knobs until it sounds good in that room when it's full of people. Settings change for every environment and whatever its connected to. Talk to the sound person.
@ColonelAngus20232 ай бұрын
Keeping your EQ settings on your bass amp between 10:00 and 2:00 will allow you to get more power from your amps gain. Using the EQ settings no higher than 2 O'clock will allow you to get more clean power from your Gain rather than using them for volume. Between 10 and 2 O'clock is the way to get a nice tone that will cut thru the stage mix nicely. Using the EQ settings too high only makes your sound clash with the other bass frequencies. Have your guitarist roll off the bass EQ on his amp about 3 numbers.

Bass amp pots are nuts.... +/- 6db on the tone pots would do me fine and easier to fine tune your tonal sweet spot... i don't like using mid or treble boost but a small amount playing a live gig will make your bass cut through the mix easier....

Bass amplification makers design their amps to be what they consider optimum at flat eq. That's the design. Tip......don't eq yourself out of the mix. Scoopers.
@maximiliangfrorer10394 жыл бұрын
Yep, the EQ only needs adjustment once for a new room, to balance the boominess out.
@DaroriDerEinzige3 жыл бұрын
Meh. That's like sayin' "Never drop the tuning of your Bass" or "Experiment with thicker or thinner strings". If you wanna have a more crunchy, a more heavy or a more classic tone to a certain Bass, you've to play with the EQ's. Also, it heavily depends on the mix of the Band and the Sound you wanna produce. If you cut the lower mids while boosting the higher a little bit, putting a little bit of Treble in it - It sound much better overdriven when you play together with a distorted rather "Dark" Sounding Guitar.

Guitar players tend to use too much bass EQ on stage which only makes the bassist have to thin out their tone and turn up too loud. Just get him/her to roll off 3 numbers from the bass EQ knob on the guitar amplifier when you are playing live.

This is a great video, but he does not explain playing style in the way of WHERE your plucking (or picking) hand is positioned. You must also take into consideration that playing towards the bridge is going to give the tone a more mid-ranged sound, while playing towards the neck is going to add more low end. Just something I noticed, but every player has their own way of doing things and half the fun is customizing your sound.
