You actually show the owners manual the feeler gauge in detail. This is the best video I have seen on KZbin on gaping spark plugs. Thanks for making this video.

My flat gauge 0.043 set gap is 0.044 using a preferred wire gauge. I tap the ground on something even wood to close it and use a gapping tool to open it. Never had a plug break or fail.

Is prying on the electrode to open it back safe? It won't hurt the electrode right? If I am using a basic inexpensive spark plugs

No need to keep on removing the gauge then hitting spark plug waste the time just leave the gauge there and hit it until it touches and then you won't have to pull it back up if you hit it too far. Nice video 😊

Do not do this with iridium spark plugs, you will snap of the points and ruin the plug
@lyla9886 жыл бұрын
I thought for a second this guy gaps his plugs like me then I was nope what an idiot he hammers on them, good way to crack the porcelain and then all but prying on the electrode to open it back up what if it's was an iridium tipped you'd have all but ruined it. I don't want to give out my secret method of gapping plugs that you can do almost perfectly and slowly and to exact increments with one hand and I don't know how this guy hasn't figured it out. You use the vise he had it clamped in, but turn it the other way, I have one padded with wood, but anyways you put it In the vise long ways and slowly turn until you have the Gap exactly where you want that way you dont accidently go to far or to little you can use one hand to crank and the other to hold the gapping tool and consistently check the gap while doing it instead of having to stop. Your welcome.

I have to hammer my spark plugs for AUDI A4 since the OEM gap tool will bend. I know people will cringe when they see you hammering but I have to do the same thing....

With the gauge tool in between, you are actually hammering on the electrode, which is NOT good!

I'm pretty much sure he wasn't hammering on electrode and did a fine job. He also doesn't have easy job, sounded like he was focused with showing us, while trying correctly adjusting his small alignments. Feeler gauge is one of best tools to accurately knock lightly with in lowering small metal peace down, alongside the measurements down a notch to manufactured recommendations. He was concentrating on not hitting too hard, hence why he hasnt replied is you assumption is bit unfair because whole point of video is mainly for beginners if that helps. l done feeling many times myself before, often practice on old spark plugs and l can tell you this, as easy it looks it ain't practically easy at all also similar to laser wheel aligning but harder because that just a few adjustments under wheel arch, silver bolt behind rotor disc and pads when it come to wheel balancing, and angling with adjusting bolt then laser tracking balance movement with metal bar covering centre, top, bottom and sides of wheel angle, with computer to align wheel performance properly but in all respect that is easier than feeling gauge. Another thing to note is, it ain't easy with a hammer, also you can't use wrench, or chissles with any other form of pliers, tools as it would crack or break whole top of spark plug and need to folk out in new one. What l tend to use is a rubber mallet, so that the rubber doesn't cause any issues to electrode if l did hit top down a bit over hard accidentally then least l got peace of mind it haven't cracked, or touched electrode and done any other damage when l keep gauge between it. Yes, KEEP GAUGE BETWEEN IT when lightly hammering top is what l believe he had done correctly. If anything, he deserve round of applause.👏
