A tip that I was shown is to unfold a paper clip and attach it to the string loop to help pull it through the hole

That could work if the string will wrap on the paper clip. I have never had a situation where a flathead and fin key didn’t work. Just for whatever reason not all leash strings are created equal! Some go right through. Others are stubborn.
