Excellent video. I got a hammock as a gift, and now know what I need. I use tarps and have a survival foil blanket glued into a cali king sheet folded in half and sewn up. Diy quilt for warm weather or a bottom insulator with a foam pad

Great video hiking dad! I would recommend having a look at the DD hammocks, full suspension set with Whoopie slings carabiners and tree hungers. In the UK it cost me £30 so I wouldn't be surprised if it cost about 50 USD. it's got the adjustability of Whoopie sling, the reliability of climbing grade carabiners and the environmental friendliness of tree hugging webbing.

Thank you for your video! I never had a hammock before, but after watching this video bought an inexpensive parachute hammock at Target ($17), some Amsteel Blue at West Marine ($7), and a rachet strap at Home Depot ($3.50), to try it out. (I didn't want to spend too much right off the bat). I made my own Whoopie slings with the Amsteel, following the directions from another KZbin video, and cut up the strap from Home Depot to make my own tree huggers (I just cut the 15' strap in half and sewed a loop on one end of each). I used your knot technique with little sticks to hold the knot, and I was so excited that everything worked great! Not quite ready to use it as my sleeping system while camping, but I think I will be using it in the park or while car camping for reading/naps. Once I know I will actually use it, I will look into upgrading the hammock itself. Anyway, thanks so much for your video!! Edit: I forgot to mention that my friend I was with rolled his eyes when I said I wanted to set up/test my new hammock, but he was shocked at how quickly I set it up, and how comfortable it was to lay in. HAHA

Excellent presentation. I still consider myself as a beginner hanger, so whoopie slings look very weird to me. I started with a suspension system using daisy-chained straps and carabiners - probably the easiest system out there. Not the lightest solution, but a very good system for a beginner. I'm only now upgrading to cinch buckles, but am glad to have started with something so easy.

J Cook, for some dang reason KZbin wont let me respond to your comment.... anyways, in a hammock the quilt system is much preferred for two reasons. The first being that in a sleeping bag, the insulation under you is compressed and becomes useless. The under quilt remedies this. The second reason is that getting into and out of a sleeping bag in a hammock is pretty tricky, and again, the top quilt remedies this. When using a pad and a tent, a top quilt is still a great design because it cuts unnecessary weight from your pack.

When I'm laying centered in the hammock I like to put my feet just slightly off to the left so they drop down a little, and move my head and shoulders just slightly to the right, because it forces my hammock to pull tight against the small of my back making my body almost totally flat with zero pressure points and perfect blood circulation. You can't pull the hammock to far apart because it'll just be like a suffocating cocoon. You gotta have a dip angle in it if you want it to let you sleep flat. Counter intuitive to most Americans who think of a hammock as having spreader bars and being pulled flat. but if you do it like I say, you'll be happier than in a sleep number bed.

couldn't agree more! On our last trip (castle danger to gooseberry) on night two we shared a site with some first time hammockers. They had no clue how to set up their hammocks or tarps, so we ended up helping them set up for the night. Fortunately for them it didn't rain hard as their tarps didn't even come close to covering their hammocks! When we help them set up they still had the price tags on their gear!

Man, you’re really doing the most. All the tying and fiddling around. Just grab hammock straps with the webbing, a hammock with carabiners on the ends and throw an adjustable ridgeline on it. I’ve got my ridgeline on all the time, packed up with it, already pre set so I get my optimum hang. Under quilt clips onto the hammocks carabiners and the bug net slips over the hammock and ends. Everything deployed and set up in less than 5 minutes and no fiddling around.

Ive never seen an under quilt before. I bring a light air mattress. It provides insulation and helps keep the hammock spread open. . I prefer to pull my hammock tight and adjust it tighter after sitting in it for a while. I dont want to be a taco or sleep in a curve.

I recently watched a video advocating doing such a thing (May 2019). Many hammocks are designed to lay in on a diagonal to the center, which is a flatter lay

Most of this kit is DIY. If beginning in hammocks and want to be entertained and informed, recommend Shugemery {Shug} on youTube
@eastonsavage65939 жыл бұрын
I would suggest that you put in continuous loops in the ends of your hammock and not just the whoopie sling. If you have both a whoopie sling and a continuous loop and either tie them together or use a carabiner it will act as a water break if it rains. That way all the water won't end up in your hammock and will just stay outside.
@annielyndespres63004 жыл бұрын
Is there an actual tree strap you can buy from a sports store? And maybe just a tarp on above. How is this for morning condensation? There's always a lot of condensation in tents.
@clivenewton76094 жыл бұрын
Plenty of places out there that sell tree straps, Amazon, both US and U.K., DD hammocks U.K. and Dutch Ware in the US to mention just a couple. As for condensation not a problem here in the U.K. as there is more than enough air flow around a hammock to prevent it or at least reduce the risk to almost nothing. Kind regards from across the pond in deepest Dorset.

Put what inside a tent? A hammock? Not unless it is designed for one, it will collapse the tent otherwise. If cover is needed, most hammock users use a tarp

@jacklee590310 жыл бұрын
From my experience hammocks are extremely forgiving on your sleeping position. I turn around a lot in my sleep and I wake up very rarely. Maybe buy a cheep hammock, give it a try for comfort and see if it's your things. You can buy terrible hammocks for a tenner on Amazon.

Any advantages to the under/over quilts compared to just a sleeping bag?
@camezcym49755 жыл бұрын
The idea is that a quilt does not have a back to compress down, in which a sleeping bag would become less useful without the loft, so a quilt does away with that part. An underquilt, or for some a sleeping pad, then acts as the back part. The same thought applies to a quilt vs a sleeping bag on the ground. A quilt is deigned to be lighter than a sleeping bag
