Are you interested in making a commonplace book? Or if you already have one, tell us what you record in it!
@thepostgradyear10 ай бұрын
I have one and at first it was all about trying to clean my room and get rid of old schoolwork. As a kid I wasn't allowed to throw away anything I got from school so I had quite a hoard to go through. I would usually write down around 1 sentence for every page I got rid of. The way I reviewed the old work was by skimming through all of it and committing to eliminating a single page. Although I would often end up eliminating 10% of the material on the first review. This was due to me targeting whatever I thought was the least valuable and getting comfortable with the idea of, and the methods for, transcribing larger and larger bits of text. I do things very differently now but for anyone with extra paper in their house it's not a bad idea to simply write a note on whatever was important about the page and potentially take a picture of the page so you can let it go.

@@DipenDas-k3p omg thanks haha - if you don't want to commit to using an old empty book (or buying a new one) and physical is what you're looking for (rather than something like notion, obsidian, evernote, etc) it might actually be better to simply get 3 trays or boxes with no tops. 1 box for scrap paper on top and new paper beneath it, a second box for finished or current works in progress, and a third box for any assorted items you'll use but don't want to keep on or in your desk like maybe scotch tape, scissors, or a tissue box

I record quick memories of nature, conversations, jokes, thoughts, news. I also keep quotes from books I am reading, inspirational quotes, pep talks, and things that make me smile. I use homemade journals made from recycled books, papers, bags, notebooks. I paint or gesso over old diary pages or business letters. I just get the ideas down- so they aren’t lost. Whatever way you choose to keep a commonplace book- I highly recommend it, add to it daily or randomly, it may go days, Weeks, or years between entries - that doesn’t matter. JUST DO IT. The More we keep on our computers, the less our children will know about us. Ephemera is how we know what our forebears thought about the world. Think about how exciting it is to find an old newspaper, letter, or diary. It’s like finding treasure and time travel all in one. Don’t let some notion of perfection stop you. In 50- 100 years what you found with keeping is going to be priceless to family, a stranger, or a historian( like me)! You could be the inspiration for a novel , a thesis, or scientific study!

I have kept commonplace books for years- but all this indexing gives my ADHD brain the worst anxiety! I make journals from recycled paper and books , keeping random quotations and impressions on various tags, pages, or added random pieces of paper. I take one off the shelf when I need advice or instruction, and always find something meaningful. As much as I love all the notebooks, pens, stickers, and post it’s, I would be paralyzed by this set up. You are a great teacher and an inspiration! I wish I could use this method. This is to sincerely shout “BRAVA “, keep making this content-AND- for those who can’t organize who might be overwhelmed, don’t let this stop you from keeping a commonplace book( or books) in ways that work for you alone! This is a wonderful practice. And the video is a great place to start. I’ve been doing it for over 50 years, and only found my best way in the past 25 years. What a great video t o inspire folks.

I used to be an art student, and have always had a sketchbook (even in the non journaling years). I think a binder notebook is a really great recommend for turning into a commonplace book! For many years I have been collecting a lot of knowledge or facts and I can't remember all of it, after write that down in commonplace book I have to classify it into the right index, not to mention I'm a not so organized person it would drive me crazy. So I like to when I suddenly remember something I can randomly write that information down and slowly classify it out later without worrying about everything getting mixed up. Plus I almost have endless page to keep continue writing without fear the limit of the pages. I also don't like having too many commonplace books, just one is more than enough. Thank you Jet Pens recently I keep thinking what's the best way to actually using my fountain pens cuz journal make me feel so cringe. @@niradnam13e well the good thing about a binder is: you should be able to take the pages out and plop them down on your desk. I have been creating a variety of notebooks for myself for a long time. At first I only had two, a quotes collection and a place to jot story ideas. I’ve kept both for a few decades now, weird as it seems to be that old. When I learned about bullet journals and their indexing and page numbering, I started organizing other notes. Crafting, book notes, recipes, fitness, writing, etc. each have their own notebooks now. I have so much of each that it just made sense to separate them out. For general random notes that I know I will need to refer to again, I keep a series of cheap spiral notebooks right at hand by the computer. Any thing can go in those pages. When I fill one I review it to make sure the index is complete and I mark various categories of notes with different washi tapes. That helps me find stuff I will likely want for reference over and over. (How-to instructions, notes from a talk, etc. ) I find that the act of writing notes helps me retain the information too. And oh, yeah, I keep a bullet journal too, lol!!

I realized a few years ago when I was trying bullet journaling that I hated making weekly and monthly planner spreads by hand when perfectly good pre-printed planners already did that in layouts I liked, but I really liked the Collections of notes, quotes, information, and reference materials I was adding to the bujo. I still have that bujo 7 years later because it became a commonplace book before I learned what a commonplace book was. I want to start a fresh commonplace book now that doesn't have all of those old weekly planner entries and grocery lists scattered throughout.

For me a Traveler’s notebook is perfect. It’s hard to get too precious about individual refills so you don’t have to worry too much about “I’m going to ruin this beautiful object” anxiety, you can have a bunch of different types of refills, and you can set each of them up to put different things in. It’s super customizable. Mine has my calendar, a refill for notes on things I’m learning, brainstorming about, or just need to write down somewhere, one for other, “secret” (as far as a random KZbin comment is concerned) things, and a journal. I have a little zipper pouch with a writing board and clear stamps in it and the other side has double sided stickers for Instax pics I take. I carry it in my bag with me everywhere and it serves me super well.

I’ve blown through three or four commonplace books at this point, though I’ve never called them commonplace books. I’ve just been calling them my “Lists and Things”. I don’t bother organising them since they’re so cluttered and eclectic that organisation becomes a hassle (for a taste how cluttered they are: some pages are for story ideas, the next for interesting animal facts, the others have school related projects in them, some have sketches, so on, so forth). The most I do is write the date and time of me writing whatever the entry was. However, I do organise my books. My first one was simply called “Lists and Things”. The second, “Lists and Things 2”. My supplies are usually my favourite mechanical pencil (a crusty, 9 year old Pilot mech pencil falling apart as we speak - I use this pencil for everything lol) or a nice but simple gel pen like the Zebra Sarasa. I’m not too precious with them compared to my sketchbooks, journals, or more recently, a comics drafting book. For me, they just have lists and things. Currently in “Fancy Lists and Things XL”. “Fancy” denotes that it’s slightly pricier than my usual ones (usually they’re old school notebooks since I like the line spacing for them, this one is a book I got from the shop but I hate the line spacing) and “XL” indicates size (in this case, A4 - I normally use A5). No number since it’s the first XL book I have.
