At my age, I’ll stick to my pressure and water bath canning. I try not to knock new products because everything I do was new at one time. It’s great that companies are allowing you to review their products because it’s much more honest and thorough than a commercial. Thank you for taking the time to do this for your subscribers. Great thing to do during the winter months before harvest is in full go mode. No way anyone has time then. 👩‍🌾❤️

Freeze Drying isn't new, its just that Harvest Right has come out with an "inexpensive" home use machine compared to the larger and super expensive industrial machines on the market. Freeze Drying beats all other methods of food preservation. not that canning and dehydrating don't have their place, i will still pressure can my butter and dehydrate my herbs, but for most other foods Freeze Drying is just a more healthy choice retaining most of the nutritional value and structure of the foods for 25+ years depending on the food. If you can some chicken noodle soup you will loose a ton of the nutrients, pressure can it and you have mushy soup, and after a couple years you have a heavy glass jar with the risk of Botulism looming soon. (yes I'm Exaggerating a little, but not much) With a Freeze Dryer you could process a big pot of home made (or store bought) soup and package it in individual servings for camping or survival reasons or store it in bulk to keep in the kitchen and just scoop out what you want and add hot water. 20 years later it will probably be just as good as it was when you processed it if you can even detect the difference, and there are no preservatives or extra salt or acid in it for preserving, its just the food as if you were about to eat it and froze it in time! If you think its too high tech or expensive for you, get with a few family members or close friends and get a unit together. Someone in the group is going to love it as a hobby and process everyones food for the cost of the little bit of electricity it costs. If anything, get a sample from someone dependable and try it yourself. 👍
@johnford943
@johnford943 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jarvis30 Agreed - I used to do a lot of canning, but once I leaned you're losing about 75-80% of the nutrition value when hi-temp canning, and then about 50% loss when dehydrating, compared to 5% loss with freeze drying -- it's now my new way to go. If I'm going to take a bunch of time to save my food, I want to minimize loss as much as possible. Plus the time to usage -- i.e. how long can you store freeze dried compared to other preservation methods -- nothing compares to freeze drying at 20-25 years.
@Jarvis30
@Jarvis30 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnford943 I have my machines now and running both non-stop and loving it. Experimenting and testing different things. Its so awesome making batches of food and putting it away for $1 and others are paying $12 for half of what i just made myself. There are negative aspects, primarily the initial cost, but its way better than canning. And don't get me wrong, I'm still going to can pickles and some other things, but i made fresh sauerkraut, freeze dried it, and the good bacteria will still be good when i rehydrate....... 25+ years later.

@@user-bv1ss5nj9b Well, i received 2 large units on Sept 14th and it took a week to get them inside due to rain and another week due to finishing the power lines. 1 machine has been working great and everything I expected. The second machine was dropped hard by FedEx or something. there was physical evidence inside the machine of a hard drop and the packing and pallet were crushed. I got with HR and the new one is arriving tomorrow. I left a few posts in R@40 group that i believe shipping has taken down turn. On the other hand, HR is busy as heck making machines with these supply shortages. When you get 500 orders in a month there are going to be defective parts and its doesn't help having FedEx smashing around delicate machines. HR took care of my problem. I look at it like an adventure and not something to rush. Freeze drying in whole is not a quick fix for your spending pleasure, its a long term investment.

Excellent video and I'm glad you are giving us all the tips so we can decide if this product is something that would be beneficial to our homestead lifestyle. The good thing I see about having a Freeze Dryer is that during our times of PLENTY we can preserve our food (more nutritiously) for any unexpected emergency or hard times we may face in the future. Right now I am trying to dehydrate as much as I can from my 5 freezers. It hit me a few months ago that it is a very real possibility that we could lose the power grid with all the uncertainty going on in our country. I thought just what would I do to be able to keep those freezers running to keep all that food from ruining in a long-term power outage. I know how difficult it was to find gas for my generators when we lost power for a couple of weeks during the last hurricane season with the direct hit we took with Sally. I had enough fuel stored for that short length of time and did okay but what if it were to be a LONG TERM outage? There is no way I can store that much fuel to run generators until I could process everything in those freezers. Dehydrating is good for me in that I don't have a big home and very little storage for a lot of canning jars. I do have lots canned but I've run out of space to store but a little bit more. The dehydrating, vacuum sealing in mylar bags with oxygen/moisture absorbers and storing in heavy-duty hard plastic totes is more beneficial to MY CIRCUMSTANCES of having very little space. A root cellar is not an option for food storage/canning jars here in coastal Alabama. You know the issues you have with your storm shelter/root cellar as far as our humidity and heat problems go. I have an underground storm shelter but the temps/humidity are a big issue without running a dehumidifier in it as it is made of concrete blocks and a concrete poured floor. Yes, I would LOVE to have a freeze dryer and could see the advantages of it over dehydrating & even pressure/water bath canning. I have 7 dehydrators (2 box type with temp control, timer, fan) and 5 round ones with temp control & fan and the last two months I have used them almost 24/7 trying to get what I can out of the freezers PLUS what I find on sale at the grocery store/farmers markets. My power bill jumped from an average of $200=$250 a month to $325 last month and $397 this month. The only thing different I have been doing is running those dehydrators around the clock. BUT I have saved a lot of food that I might would possibly lose with no power so what else can I do? I could definitely use one to freeze dry all the meat I have as I have said, I don't have much room left for many more canning jars and the Freeze Dryer could remedy that problem. I will decide once you freeze dry some food and do a taste test as I do value your opinions and trust your judgements on TASTE & QUALITY of food. You guys were sure lucky to have been given the opportunity to get a free Freeze Dryer to demo but I consider US HOMESTEADERS LUCKY to have YOU GUYS GIVE US VALUABLE INFO AND TIPS and know that it is FACTS & THE TRUTH and not just some hyped up infomercial to make sales. Looking forward to your future videos on the freeze dryer! Stay warm. We are supposed to have wind chills tonight (Monday) from 0-10(F) and temps in the upper teens. A bit warmer tomorrow night and not so cold for the length of time it will be tonight/tomorrow morning. 16-17 hrs of freezing/below freezing temps tonight and only 10-12 hours tomorrow which makes a world of difference when preparing for freezing pipes, well pump and the animals/gardens. Got a heater going in my greenhouse, too so PRAYERS all will survive (my seedlings for spring planting). Be safe out there everyone & GOD BLESS!

If I didn’t know how hard y’all have worked and how meticulously and even handedly y’all will be evaluating this, I could be tempted to be jealous. I have drooled after one for several years, but am being patient because Harvest Right has been steadily improving the quality and cutting the price on their products. I do want to get one after I have settled into my retirement property, but first I need to build a home (likely burrowed into the hillside for climate control and other reasons). Even though freeze dried doesn’t shrink things like dehydrating does, the quality is better and the product can be powdered for storage.

Hey Danny check out “Retired at 40”. He has lots of great info on this thing. Ours will be arriving very soon. Especially look for his oil filtering with a Britta water filter pitcher and the blue oil.

Be sure to look at “retired at 40” review of the premier pump. He does not recommends the blue oil for the premier pump.

We bought one right after Christmas. It's like a science experiment trying everything out. Sometimes it's surprising just how good it is before rehydration. This weather reminds you why you need to store extra of everything. We are in NW Arkansas and it's 7 degrees at noon, low -2 with 6 inches of snow and more on the way. We're home watching it snow. We are carrying buckets of water to animals We filled them in case the lines froze, and they did. We've had city water lines freeze in the ground in Mississippi. The main natural gas line broke from ice dams in the Pearl River that year. Never take anything for granted...take care of yourself and your animals. My dil gets rid of everything extra and just goes to the store to buy it when she actually needs it. My son was out yesterday and again today buying stuff they forgot they needed. Take care and have fun with your new toy. We're planning for our greenhouse.

Great video guys. Facebook has several great freeze dryer groups. My favorite is Betty Harvest Right Freeze Dryers Group. Lots of great info and pointers from folks that are kind enough to share their experiences.

I have the same medium freeze dryer in black with the same pump. I thought it had to have the 20 amp breaker but I went back to re-read the website and it said that was just for the large one. I need to get my freeze dryer ready to use. They don't send the cover with them anymore. Mine had a note that they stopped sending those because they can cause the door not to seal correctly. I'll have to go through the instruction book and probably refer back to this video when I start it up the first time. My oil filter also looks like a Brita water filtration pitcher but smaller.

My Premiere pump was very cloudy after the very first test run with the bread 🍞. I called the technicians. They talked with me to see that I did everything correctly. I then did a second run. I used a thin layer on onions. I used a new bottle of oil and put in 2 cups fresh oil after draining out the oil Used in the first test run. It never got down to the mTorr number required. Again, I called the Techs. They sent me labels to return the machine with the pump. So, I am now waiting for them to test it in their laboratory and fix it. After that they will return it to me and I will set it up again. They have been very helpful so far. It is still a question why the machine doesn't work when I first tried it. Also, it did have a bad smell inside when it arrived. So, I am praying this works well.

I have one of those and bought a cart too. This is such a wonderful machine!! It is so heavy I had to get my son to lift it up. I don't think there was any instructions with mine to run to test it. I will have to double check it. I am so glad you are doing this. I have a friend who is considering getting one of these and this will help her make a decision as well as help to set hers up. Mine is a few years old and all the extra didn't come with it except the oil change kit. There is a lot of improvements since I bought mine. I love it! I would suggest getting desiccants to put in your storage containers. The freeze dried foods suck up moisture quickly.

Looking forward to see what you freeze dry in it. Ours just arrived last Wednesday. Running my first official batch of produce through it today - peppers from the garden that I threw in the freezer at the end of the season. Have fun with it.

I had the same problems with my pump Danny. Only I didn't know what was wrong until you just showed me. The booklet omitted some instructions about how to turn on the pump correctly. The open and close was not marked as the booklet described I as well

Yep freeze dryer...Mine should be coming in next few weeks, I got everything to do with it just waiting on it ,we are putting in a cabinet with counter top,, wish I would have done it years ago.I can't wait to freeze dry some good food especially eggs, and well everything else I wish now I would have ordered the large..ours is going into a shed with ac.. and a fan , and we ordered premiere pump also..our freezers will be in the shed also .we did put in a dedicated 30 amp breaker just for freeze dryer..OH I cant wait.. Thanks for all the good advice..I have seen on retired at 40,freeze drying... It will get water in the window of the premiere pump..so most people say they recycle the oil every few batches ..Im not sure, as I haven't gotten mine yet
