Oh man! You just explained something in 7 minutes that I searched for an entire afternoon! thank you!

This is a seriously helpful video and I'm shocked that anyone has given this a thumbs down. I've always used a mixing desk so that was my way of creating a headphone mix. Moving in-the-box is nice but I still don't know how to do things like this. Great video Joe. Thank you

@Chillylion The reverb never gets recorded. You can use a TON of reverb, and then get rid of it later if you want.

@DocPicklez Good question. I'm pretty sure it DOESN'T bypass the plug-in. But you could pretty easily test it out. Do something drastic on a plug-in and see if it shows up on the send.

Joe, Great video as usual. This is very similar to the way I set up my headphone cues in Digital Performer. Digital Performer also has something called "Cue Mix". In any case, I have two headphone amps that I use. One output pair is from 3 and 4 and goes to one amp. Another output pair from 5 and 6 go to the second headphone amp. One amp with it's mix is sent to my drum booth and the other amp with it's mix feeds the other musicians. I can listen to each phone feed as well as my own mix.

@Thouchins You need headphones because when you're recording a vocal track, if the speakers are on you'll record the sound of the speakers as well as your voice. headphones keep this from happening

Hey, thank you for the video. Today is my first time recording a band without my head engineer guiding my me (I just got out of school for audio engineering) and I was having a slight panic attack as I forgot everything about headphone mixes. Thanks for helping banish those jitters!
@HomeStudioCorner13 жыл бұрын
@Thouchins You either put the musician in another room, or the engineer needs to where headphones too. And just turn off the speakers if you don't want to hear them.

Good tut. I like how you explain each step in the setup. You may want to cover groups and how to setup groups on the sends.

Joe, I'm not sure if you're aware but I believe the Presonus HP4 does have Monitor Thru Output as well as a Monitor Level Pot on the front.

Great video! I was just curious on what interface you have? All I have right now is an Mbox Mini but I thinking of upgrading to something a bit better.
@paulchris563711 жыл бұрын
Joe, I seen you were using busses for your headphone mixes. It's been my experience that when using Protools LE you cant use sends. That after you record enable the tracks the sends get bypassed. And what about the latency issues that would occur with it. Thanks, Paul

Dear Joe: Could you make a video doing this in Studio One please??? Thank you dude!!! Love your work!! Marco from Uruguay

Handy. Can you copy the levels from your own mix to the headphone mix to get to a starting point quicker? So you don't have to go through every single track individually?
@HomeStudioCorner7 жыл бұрын
There may be a shortcut for that, but I don't know it. Sorry!

great vid! how do you connect the 3/4 outputs to the headphone amp. i have a Pyle Pro PHA40 headphone pre amp but it only has 1 trs input. how do i get the 3/4 in to that. Thanx!

Hey Joe, This works great for my Protools set up using my Scarlet 18i8 interface, but do you have any videos for setting up headphone mixes using the presonus studio live AI 16.4.2 mixer as a interface? Love your work, Sean Perkins

I favorited this video because I won't use this for a while...and when I need it, I can't remember how to do it! Thank you! One question, though...how do you combat latency through the interface using this method? I can change the interface stream mode to minimum latency, but it's still there even though that terribly bad.
@HomeStudioCorner7 жыл бұрын
Latency is an issue whether you're doing headphone mixes or not, but yeah if you can't get low latency on your system, this method of headphone mixing won't be that useful.
@AaronKelley7 жыл бұрын
Joe Gilder Music thanks for responding. I figured as much. Is there another alternative that doesn’t break the bank? I’ve done live sound all my life, so studio work is still new to me.
@markkieviet32497 жыл бұрын
Try changing the buffer size of your DAW (note that you need a very good CPU to do low latency tracking through your daw). If this doesn't work for you there are multiple options. If you take a split from your inputs you could feed another device with your microphones, so in example some 24 ch analog desk with 6 monitor sends, this means you can get 24 inputs mixed separately to 6 different headphone amps. (or don't split but use the desk as a preamp to your converter) Use the method Joe Gilder is using to feed stereo channels on the analog desk for the playback. (latency doesn't matter in the playback if your daw has delay compensation) So this is the cheapest way, you could do the same but than with a Behringer Powerplay, Hearback or Aviom system.

so if the drummer wants he's own headphone monitor mix to hear the click teack full blast, then do I need to do a seperate output 5-6 output just for the drummer?

will this work with the Firestudio Project? it has like 6 outputs for monitoring? can i sent them to those monitor outputs on the firestudio? i got 2 firestudio projects daisy chained so i got a total of 12 outputs, more then enough, i hope i dont have to get an headphone amp & when we do this we wont get no delay or anything?
@TheRealBrandonBlackwell2314 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe I was wondering :59 how do you set-up your send on the vox track to the delay with the faders to the delay I haven't been able to figure that out. Thank

Yeah, what I said is correct. All major DAW's have the ability to do what I showed in this video. Of course the big variable is you have to know how to use the sends feature in your DAW to do it.
@jonioden63238 жыл бұрын
Joe Gilder Music my bad. u thought that was the purpose of the video, as the title itself is worded...'how to'. but in your words, I surmise ehat you're actually saying is "I'll show you how to do thisb, but you need to learn how to do it in order for me to show you...how to do it'. GOT IT!... I'll be back to learn how to do it as soon as I learn how to do it. much appreciated. great video!

it all went by too quickly for me. still need to know. its the reason I came here. I agree that things will work similarly with different daws, but they can appear too differently that when watching ANY daw tutorial that's NOT the same as mine, the student must first translate 'that' function to his own daw, before he can even begin to learn what the teacher is attempting to get across. not YOUR fault. just an unneeded learning curve.

I recommend finding someone who uses your DAW and asking them?
