I have been shooting recurves for 50 years . This is the first time someone has explained brace height in a manner that anyone can understand . It has always been dealt with as some mystic / magical science . Thank you for that !
@jamescooper2618
@jamescooper2618 7 жыл бұрын
Nothing mystical about brace height, only "teachers who do not explain it well. It's simple physics. The lower brace height gives the arrow a longer power stroke. This actually changes the way the arrow flies. Every bow/arrow/archer combination is different so you do need to experiment and find where your bow shoots the best, arrow flight and bow noise. The bowyers numbers are just a basic guide. Good luck!

Also, if you're brace height is off, the tail end of your arrow will come off the riser funny and accuracy diminishes
@cgreeneblue
@cgreeneblue 6 жыл бұрын
I think the reason it's confusing is that the "longer power stroke" only applies when comparing two different bows set up correctly with correct string tension. If you have two 50# bows with the same type/ brand string, the one with the shorter brace height should be faster because its got the longer stroke. However, if you take that bow with the longer brace height and try to untwist or "slacken" the string the limbs relax effectively shortening the brace height but this does not add speed because you've lost limb tension. So shortening the brace height on your own bow should make it slower not faster because of the loss of limb tension. Longer stroke yes, but less limb tension usually indicates a net loss in speed. So, lengthening the brace height on ones own bow should not add speed. I hope that still makes sense.
@JerryThain
@JerryThain 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, ^ the decrease in limb tension has a much greater affect on arrow speed than the increase in the "power stroke" of the brace height.

I’ve been shooting the compound bow for about 6 years now and after watching your videos, I decided to order my first recurve. Your videos are informative no-frills traditional archery. Plus the leather gear, the hardwood bow, and the forest landscape is a fun aesthetic for the topic. It beats some guy in his company’s polo shirt standing on a manicured lawn. These videos really makes me want to leave my backyard range and get out in nature with my bow.

The string loops are made two different sizes. Put the large loop over the top limb and slide it down first, then connect the smaller loop to the bottom limb. Also, if you choose to string a bow the way you did in the video, it is best to spread your feet wider apart and put the riser of the bow behind your leg, that way the upper limb can be more easily bent to equal the bend of the bottom limb and less chance of over torquing/twisting the upper limb damaging the bow. Wood grain on that bow riser is nice. Amazing how much quieter it shot when you put on string silencers and fur on limbs. Putting thin pieces of leather on the shelf and riser can quiet down even more.

Thanks so much for Your help! Recently bought the same bow only in the 50 lb. draw weight. Brace height was wrong and I was using a nock point exactly 90 degrees to the arrow rest. Twisted the string as you suggested and arrived at about 7 1/2 inches, and moved the nock point up 1/2 inch. What a difference! Smoother shots, much more accurate and consistent. Thank you again for your help!

Great shooting Lilly. You can further silence your bow by attaching the fuzzy side of a small piece of velcro to the arrow shelf. I've done this myself, and I'm really happy with it. Lilly when using the step through method to string a recurve bow, use your open palm to push your limb to meet the string. If you tightly grip the limb it is easy to torque the limb causing the string to lay outside the groove. That is very dangerous. It could cause the bow to come apart on you. Good shooting gal. Keep it up.

chiefkirk thats a good tip because my dad torqued his bow this was with a compound bow but it can happen with recurves his string came off the cam and cut about half an inch into his arm and in another occasion a guy was shooting a recurve he also torqued the bow and th arrow came off the rest and went clean through his hand so yeah those are some reasons not to torque
@JerryThain
@JerryThain 6 жыл бұрын
Typically, a string will have a bigger loop on top, because you slide it over the limb tip and half way down the limb before stepping through. Place the smaller loop on the low limb tip properly, then when you push on the top limb you slide the top loop up to the tip. Take it off in reverse order, sliding it back down the limb instead of taking it off the top, and you keep the same twist without having to remember how many times you twisted it.

Own two of these Black Hunter bows... the longbow version with an extra set of limbs and a recurve version at 45LB's, longbow heav e35LB limbs on it with a set of 45LB limbs for hunting... since in my state in the USA legal limit of hunting bows is 40LBS... like these bows and easy to modify them. Built a custom riser for the 45 LB limbs and waiting on a few parts to show up to finish that... but customized the bow riser to fit my hand perfect... will test it before too long and I built the rise out of very heavy Dogwood of all things... broke two power tools building the custom riser. Any way I like your videos and camping stuff you do and wanted to say I do find these bows very useful. My longbow version of the Black Hunter was the first mass production run of these and a few issues on it I didn't find the greatest but it is still very nice... for a longbow due to the price. The newer version I got in the recurve limb style was a lot better fitting and the stain work darker and much nicer and I personally like the matte finish for hunting... no reflection to spook anything when settled into a "tree" or what ever... but any way here is a ling for some modifications that can be done to make a Black Hunter bow riser better... I just built one of my own design from Dogwood because the wood is very hard and I am experimenting with the sight window design to see if what I've done will affect arrow flight in a unique way but will know when my parts arrive and I test it out. Any way wish you and all your family the best Lilly and thanks for the videos and here is the link for fixing Black Hunter risers if you want center shot o n them... most anyone can do, also the wood on the riser they call "Diamond Wood" but it is a laminated wood and I own some rifles with this wood for the stocks and it is beautiful lamination work for the wood.. heres the link and wish you and all your friends the best.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWiqYZ-mmranbtE

Nice Shooting - have you ever tried "walking the String" to help adjust your aim point ? An old guy taught me this trick years ago when I still was Bow Hunting. If you shoot say " Low " consistently after several shots try walking your Knock Point on the string down one finger height or so - this will make the arrow strike higher on your target . Of course walk your finger the other direction for the opposite effect. after some practice you can train yourself in this to adjust for different shooting Distances using this method
@RodgerBright
@RodgerBright 5 жыл бұрын
Problem is string walking requires a much longer bow. I have an identical bow to this, there are about 10 companies that make the same thing (Sino Art, Top Archery, Galaxy Ember, etc.), and its a great bow to look at, its a great bow to shoot, but string walking on it is basically a non starter IMO unfortunately...

Bought my Grandkids take downs. They are great to shoot but the 1 piece recurves fling the arrows flatter. I had that problem with my damen howatt 60lb hunter. String slap. Using to light of an arrow. Went from 220 grains to 580 grains. No slap. Accurate as all get out. Made my own arrows. Surewood shafts. The beaver balls work great as silencers. Tried the felt or fur on limbs. It was lame and came off. Only fix is the right weight arrow for your bow. Otherwise to light of an arrow is like a dry fire. Hard on your bow.

Agree. I wear a back quiver to carry a few dozen arrows but they are tied down. I wear a hip quiver that holds a dozen arrows. I don't carry my back quiver unless I plan to spend an extended time in the deep woods. It is part of my survival pack. 2 takedown hybrid bows and 4 dozen arrows. I have always shot off my knuckle with either hand. My style is very "old school." i do have a hybrid Longbow with an arrow shelf on both sides. Learning to shoot with either hand will train you to keep both eyes open when shooting.
@vinrohm5627
@vinrohm5627 7 жыл бұрын
If you're trekking thru the thick woods, you'll find the advantage for the back quiver over the hip quiver. That hip quiver is going to hang up on brush, brambles, and tall grass. The back quiver won't get hung up because its behind you. Hip quivers are best for target shooting. But in a bugout situation, you'll prefer the back quiver. Mine is a back quiver. In addition to holding my arrows (up to 24 with broadheads attached) it also holds my breakdown bow in the breakdown condition, all my shooting accessories, and my Sven saw. There's not a lot of rattle to it either when full of arrows. I pack them six to a tube (four tubes) and there is almost no room for play. They still draw easily from the quiver.

That’s a quiet bow . Sounded good . 40# is perfect for target shooting imo. No need for shoulder injuries . I’m sore now after 3 weeks of 70# 100 arrows a day but it’s still fun . We re about 60 yards now . Not quite ready for 80 yds yet

I just bought my first recurve bow 50lbs , and a bow stringer. Finally figured out the assembly lol but can’t get the thing strung for the life of me. Afraid I might break it and Definitely wish I had some educated talent like you! Anyhow thx for sharing.
@SuperUncleRyan
@SuperUncleRyan 7 жыл бұрын
You should get a bow stringer. Stringing your bow that way is good in a pinch but a stringer is safer and better for the bow. Good anchor point + practice = good shooting Nice work!!

Nice vid Lilly and you are an excellent shot with that bow. I haven't shot a recurve bow since 1982 but definitely want to try again. I checked the Madarin Duck website and they are completely sold out of all left handed recurve bows. I'll try again in Jan. By the way, what kind of fletchings are you using on the arrows? Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Just as an FYI, if you release the string with your right hand, you're a right handed shooter, FYI. So you'd need a right handed bow.

Thanks Feint. I wasn't sure since I draw with my right hand and hold the bow with my left, so I assumed I needed a left handed bow.

Great video and congratulations on your award. Just a suggestion from an old bowman, to increase accuracy (not that you were doing badly in that regard) hold the bow loosely only taking the weight in the place between your thumb and forefinger with the other fingers out front to keep from dropping the bow after the shot. As far as release that has always been something that improves with practice but from what I’ve seen on this video you’re doing that pretty well.

Now I'm debating on whether to get the Samick Sage or the Black Hunter. I like the options on the Sage and the no allen wrench take down. Your videos are awesome as you explain easily and to the point. I did not know that it was as easy to set the brace height and nock point location. Very Impressive that your first shooting was with no nock installed. !! Also as other replies have said. VERY NOTICABLE NOISE REDUCTION when you added the fur to the limbs and the fur string silencers

Hamez sb Thank you for your moronic road kill eating post. I am black man and have been shooting long bows, recurve bows and cross bows starting in 1958. I've handbuild thousands of arrows by hand and taught the Boy Scouts of Americia archery. I still shoot four or five times a week using a Bear Grizzly recurve at 50# @ 28", and hand built arrows at 72. The title Black Hunter is who I am, and yes you are a Biopsychosocial failure and a moron.

@@toxophilite6804 You are the most insecure person ive ever seen embaress themselves in a youtube comment LMAO. It was a simple joke making fun of how you americans take words so literaly, so thanks for just proving my point. By the way you can't say you "Hand build arrows by hand" then proceed to call anyone else a moron, it's self contradicting considering level of literacy you possess. ALSO i just realized these "BLACK HUNTER" bows do sell in the US. They are really big in Alabama, Texas, Louisianna and everywhere in the south! theres a big archery club that uses them going by KKK or something, i dunno.
