I've found the built in preamps in most Mac computers are quite exceptional. Never had any bad audio, noise floor is low, crystal clear audio. So I use the 3.5mm input & headphone jacks in my Mac Pro through a mixing board along with a Rack compressor / Aphex 204. Been using this setup for over 7 years now.

I was recently given (That's right, an anonymous gift. I was dumbfounded!) a HUGE amount of equipment when I was chatting online about dealing with caring for a parent with dementia. I was just casually mentioning how I'd like to do a podcast about what to look out for and how to deal with certain situations that can arise. Anyway, this is what I received. An Electro Voice RE-20 mic and shock mount and Pop screen (filter?) An OC White boom arm. A Mackie VLZ1402 Mixer A JK Audio Broadcast Host A Roland R-05 Digital Audio Recorder A pair of Sony MDR-7506 Headphones A Behringer HA4700 Headphone Amplifier A Behringer MDX-4600 Compressor/Limiter/Gate My only problem is setting it all up. He sent about 4 1/8" to two 1/4" cables and two XLR to 1/4" cables. Of course the mic came with a standard XLR cable. I have basically hooked the recorder to the main out 1/4" jacks to the 1/8" Line In port on the recorder. My mic is plugged into the Mic 1 XLR input. I would really like to figure out how to take advantage of all this equipment, but I feel I need some more cables and probably a (for lack of a better term) wiring diagram so I get it right. Not to mention what I'd need for Skype as you talk about. #wayoverwhelmed

Hey David - setting up a mixer, recorder, mic, and headphones is generally the same process regardless of brand. Outside of cosmetic differences it's basically the same connection and hook up process. Fine tuning your sound based on the gear you own, well.. that's another story. I'd suggest visiting my website artofpodcasting.com/ for more instructional videos and you can contact me via email (not youtube) for specialized help.

It really depends. There are plenty of ways to pinch pennies. Just depends on preferences. I bought everything new and run premium cables. My total investment is about $5k but I have more gear than is shown in this video. It's very possible to get a great set up for under $1k.

I have the Telos HX-2 and i was wondering if you could provide in-depth details of how you configured it with VoIP and Google Voice? I would like to do the same thing. Thanks
@artofpodcasting
@artofpodcasting 10 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the configuration for each VIOP service is unique. Google has recently changed their terms of service and now charges a small premium for the set up shown. Just know that your TELOS will work with ANY VIOP service so your best bet is to find one you like and follow their set up instructions.

I am using Skype on my 2013 macbook pro with Ecamm Call Recorder. I don't need background music. I do Skype interview podcasts with only one caller. In this case, I'm guessing I only need one usb sound card and I don't need the Telos. Is that correct? Also, my macbook pro doesn't have a fire-wire connection. It has the thunderbolt, so just use an adapter to connect to the mixer? With this setup, would I use Ecamm or could I record straight into Audition?

how do you record yourself and get the sound just form the microphone since your camera has its own microphone. is it through editing in the computer afterwards that you mute your video recording and overlap your voice recording?

You're right. But you'll also notice I'm not calling this video "how to set up a podcast for as little money as possible." If you do a big show with live callers, live streaming, and video, you're gonna pay.

Will the software work with any mixer board and what are jungles? Thank you, James
@artofpodcasting
@artofpodcasting 10 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by software? Universal control is Presonus software made for this specific mixer. Logic is a general DAW and works on any Mac. Jingles are any audio sound effect that can be played in real time during the show. With the format shown, I don't add music or effects in post. Everything is done live.

Is there a less expensive alternative to the Telos phone machine?
@artofpodcasting
@artofpodcasting 11 жыл бұрын
There are other brands but you get what you pay for. I've tested quite a few and Telos is generally the best. They also have other models available if you are looking for something with less features.

Is the only difference between the Telos HX1 and HX2 that: the HX1 can only talk to 1 phone line and the HX2 can talk to 2 phone lines? And why do you prefer this brand over the JK Broadcast Host? Thanks!
@artofpodcasting
@artofpodcasting 11 жыл бұрын
The difference between the HX1 and HX2 are the number of phone lines. The Telos system actually monitors call sound and adjusts for constant volume and clarity. This all happens automatically and makes a huge difference when you have callers using cell phones. The JK system does nothing more than bring the sound into your soundboard. There is no real time processing. Telos is a broadcast standard and it's performance is second to none. If your show depends on live callers, Telos is the way to go.
@seanchin
@seanchin 11 жыл бұрын
Art Of Podcasting That's awesome. I'm probably going to eventually pick up the Presonus and the Telos. Can you show how to set up the mix minus setting on the physical Presonus mixer? Or can this only be done within Universal Control? I'm assuming the same software mix minus ex. AUX send settings can be done in Logic Pro X as well?

Funny guy...feel free to put up a video showing me your $1,500 dollar studio. If this video was all about recording a podcast on the cheap, then all you need is a smartphone and free software. So when you argue price and call me a MAC user you clearly don't get it. Typical windows user.

The presonus is way overkill for a podcast. You can get by with a much cheaper and less frills mixer than the presonus.

COPE Farms I realize you said PROFESSIONAL Podcast but geez why not get something more expensive than the presonus LOL :) Just messing with you good setup just shocked at a podcast video promoting such a powerful tool as the presonus. I can't see a podcast using 1/10 of what that thing can do.

My studio wasn't cheap but I do this professionally. The basic stuff that I show in this video will run about 3k plus computers. Obviously your costs will vary depending on sales and if you buy used items. A good mixer and microphone like what I have listed above will usually be enough for most people. I record live shows with remote guests and that requires additional hardware.
@dancamarda4793

Download Audacity (free) and buy an Audio Technica ATR2100 microphone. If you're not super serious into podcasting, if you don't have guests.. then.. a mixer, especially his mixer, is just WAY too much money to spend. What I just told you will cost you about $40.00.

Dan Camarda Dan great point. That's why I call this video "How to set up a professional podcast studio." If you are trying to go the inexpensive route then buy used gear on craigslist or record directly into a smart phone which almost everyone already has. While I agree this setup is not for everyone, If you need all the options this is an excellent choice.
