💕My friends have a similar soil & stone base & done a no dig garden BUT they also made an air compost bin using chicken wire which they made a circle out of & filled it with grass cuttings from friends gardens & leaves they started it with a layer of straw leaves grass cuttings & cardboard they also collected coffee grounds & spread it out in a layer they would turn it lightly with a pitch fork once a month💕By next growing season they had homemade compost & it was FREE💕

They are huge! Especially Hamish. Gardens of any size style or method seem to be more crucial each year. You're lucky to find what you're looking for in the stores much less be able to afford it!

LOL this place is covered in water lines! I refuse to waste anything, so once our spring collection is full we have the ability to pipe the excess not only to the garden barrels but to the pond as well.

One of the best straw bale videos I've seen. 3 Q's though ... What did you season with? What did you grow? What spacing for the various veggies/plants? Subbed

If your topsoil is 6in deep you should start importing free wood chips. I did this years ago and have a ton of nice soil now...total cost $0

I wouldn't mind a few loads of wood chips. But no one is going to service our area, or if they could someone else has got them in their pocket.. Leaving this far out has both pros and cons

I did straw bales years ago when I leaved on a different property. It is the way to go... and I sit here thinking: why haven't I continued growing in straw bales?! Thanks for the reminder!!

I don't get the same satisfaction from straw bale gardens VS traditional hand broke soil gardens. But this year in particular trying to do everything at once it really was our best bet.

We will try our best to do that this year! Our gardening situation is a little complex up here, as we've only got four to six inches of soil on top of a solid rock base. That's why we went with straw bale gardening the first year, not only because it was easy! But because it got us out of doing that extra labor on that first year. However this year, we're going to start a lasagna garden! Partially because we can't afford the straw bales.. but also since we did straw bales last year we have a huge amount of compost to spread out this year thereby increasing or 4 to 6 in of soil! If I had a garden tiller on hand we would be making garden videos right now! But rest assured they will begin once those funds arise!

I was thinking that if you put up some makeshift sides around the leaving some screened areas for ventilation, that might help to help them moist for longer.
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods Жыл бұрын
We had talked about putting cardboard around them. But that would kill the curb appeal lol. And it's possible the added moisture would degrade the bale fully. I think of it kind of like a coconut husk hanging basket, it only really works because some of it is dry and not decomposed. Your suggestion is still a good one though! And I'm thinking on ways in which it can be done.

We're gokkng to try straw bale gardening this year. I was going to notch the rows of bales with an electric chainsaw so packaged soil could be placed on top for a seed bed or smaller pkants to be planted. Could a sawzall be used to notch deeper?
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods 10 ай бұрын
Assuming I understand what you're trying to do, I almost think a weed eater would be better.. The straw bales we've got aren't all that stiff so I don't think a sawzall would do it and more than likely a chainsaw would just get packed full.

My bales are not heating up after adding urea for 5 days.
@SteepintheWoods

I'm not entirely sure what your set up is. There are a lot of factors that go into how fast it decomposes. Make sure the fertilizer is not washing off, that it's thoroughly watered in a sunny spot. You also don't want to over water it. We did that the first year and it was just washing the fertilizer out of the bale. It needs to be able to stay inside of the bale.
