Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been scouring the internet for how to properly format my comics. I had gotten frustrated as I didn't think I was going to be able to print my comics, but this has helped tremendously. Thanks!

Thanks so much, Matt. This is the video I have scoured KZbin for for days. See, I'm a traditional graphic artist who is working for my first graphic novel, and could NOT find a video detailing what YOU have detailed in this video. THANK YOU!!

@@MattGarveyComics What I'd like to know is how to set up to draw a double-splash page when you're working with 11 x 17 Bristol board. Will that be a pair of that size joiner side by side, something like 22 x 34 inches? (Please don't laugh too hard, but I'm struggling for information, and I can't help but believe that too many instructors on KZbin seem to take it for granted that there aren't people like myself who doesn't know the basics, and need step-by-step information.) Might you have a video on this?

Always thankful watching your videos. What about if the comic is already lettered and I now change it from RGB to CMYK?
@MattGarveyComics
@MattGarveyComics Жыл бұрын
Awwww cheers dude. Appreciate that. As for the letters it really depends on what colour the letters are in even if it’s BLACK because there are different black colours you have plain black which is just 0, 0, 0, 100 black in the colour palette but better black is RICH black which is Cyan 75 Magenta 68 Yellow 67 Black 90

Hi Matt! Amazing video, super helpful. If I'm working with A5 paper (148 x 210 mm), should I use the same guide sizes?
@MattGarveyComics
@MattGarveyComics Жыл бұрын
Hey buddy, it really depends on the size your printing on…AND the resolution you are scanning to too. So for example comic artists work on boards that are nearly A3 and scan at 600dpi so when it gets shrunk down it looks fantastic and doesn’t lose any detail. Personally I would say that a5 is to small, because it’s on 25% of the size of an A3 sheet of paper….and half the size of an A4 sheet….so you are working kinda small So, I’d say Scan on of your page in to your pc and see how it looks
@Leodw14
@Leodw14 Жыл бұрын
@@MattGarveyComics Thanks! Actually in my country A5 is the standard size, so I was wondering how to setup the margins/bleed for this size for my comics
@MattGarveyComics
@MattGarveyComics Жыл бұрын
Well A5 in mm is 148 x 210 mm so you need to have a 3mm added around that so that will be 154 x 216mm. But you’ll still need to double check with your printer as to their requirements…they might even have a template you can use!

Matt, been going through your vids and love your content. If you want to print special edition books that are bigger than standard size, do the artists have to create larger art at the beginning of the process? Or, can you proportionally increase the size of a standard comic book page to make for a hardcover edition for example a little larger, but the art still fits exactly the same
@MattGarveyComics
@MattGarveyComics 3 ай бұрын
Hey buddy, appreciate the love! And great question. As long as your artist collaborator is scanning the finished art over to you at 600dpi you should be golden to scale up the pages to create a prestige format comic. Only caveat to this is, they’re also drawing on a default sized comic board (paper) or digital equivalent. The only time it won’t work is if they are drawing on “tiny” sheets of paper and expect you to “blow them up” for pre press. What I would say is, before starting the project just outline how you want the pages to be sent to you. Me, I always ask my collaborators to draw standard US comic size 176mmX266mm and a scan or file resolution of 600dpi. Do that and you’ll have no issues (comic pun intended ;) )

@@MattGarveyComics I see. I'm a newb so bare with the dumb questions lol. So, hypothetically, if the book was smaller than the board/digi equiv proportion the artist was using, this would stretch and destroy the art? So before a project starts, I need to know what they're drawing and what size? Also, does the print shop then need to be 600 dpi as well? I see some, for example, like Comix Well Spring, that do 400dpi. Thanks for the time man! I'm gonna keep bombing through your content!
@MattGarveyComics

It’s all good matey, you’ll eventually get to a video where I show the size of a comic artist hoard and the size is a comic. Artists working on bigger boards than the actual finished book, do shrinking it down you’ll be fine. I prefer 600 dpi, that’s just me. But anything 300 dpi and above will print fine 👍

Quick question I am using cm instead of mm the rules still apply right? Also u use 3 cm,9mm for the area but then use bigger numbers so can I not just 3 cm or 9 cm for all sides
@MattGarveyComics
@MattGarveyComics 2 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy, thank for watching. So, 3mm in cm is 0.3cm, so to convert mm to cm just add 0. In front of the cm number so 9mm will be 0.9cm If you get confused Google can convert it for you Hope it helps! 👍

How do i keep image the same resolution when i shrink it
@MattGarveyComics
@MattGarveyComics 3 жыл бұрын
hmmmm....I’ve never lost resolution shrinking but if you’re losing it you can always turn it into a smart object but right clicking the layer and selecting smart object. that should let it maintain its quality.
@MattGarveyComics
@MattGarveyComics 3 жыл бұрын
Also, If you are shrinking and then enlarging the image once you’ve imported in you’ll lose quality too. Try and shrink the page just once after dragging it in. The more you shrink and enlarge, shrink and enlarge trying to get it to fit you’ll notice quality issues. 👍

@@MattGarveyComics then why are you using Photoshop, if is the same? And also FYI I have clip studio EX old version though! And in the long run you will come into problems that you can't solve on clip studio that you need photo editor for which created specifically for it! Therefore you can't use other softwares that are not! And Photoshop can cost over $200 a year! So this does not leave you with much imagination!

@@MattGarveyComics well I just want to get tied too any subscription fees! Especially with Adobe, because it's not just one program you're going to need, but probably more than two or three from the start. And you have to pay subscription for each one! There about $20 something a pop! It's $240 something a year for just one! And for only one user! So you and a team need to pay to even make something with it each! Then you can only use it for one PC at a time! So talk about paying for basically having them steal from you under your nose because to everyone is just $20 a month big deal until you start to add it all up! So for most gimp or Krista and even clip studio maybe the only hope they have left! But as for me I migrated to open source or one time fee only!
