Here's how to edit the trendline to pass through the origin: 1. Hide the trendline of the original graph 2. Graph 2 points using the new false value at y=0 and y=1 3. show trendline for the false value and hide the points on the graph

You do not need to show the Trendline in your graph if you don't want to.

However, I just want to let you know that a negative slope does not mean it's inversely proportional. It is still directly proportional (multiplied by a negative amount). Example, y =-3x is still directly proportional. The slope is always changing by a factor of -3, giving linear equation. Inversely proportional is when the product equals a constant. Example, PV = 6. If you increase P, V decreases, but this inverse proportionality gives you a decay or growth function (looks exponential). Using the above example of PV = 6, if P = 6 then V= 1. If P = 3 then V = 2. If P = 2 then V = 3. So in this inverse proportionality, the rate of change is not constant. If you had y = -3x, the rate of change is constant and therefore linear. For example, if x = 1 then y = -3(1) = -3. If x = 2, then y = -3(2) = -6, which is a constant rate of change of -3. I hope this clarifies the difference between directly proportional (linear whether slope is + or -, and inversely proportional where the rate of change is not constant, but more like a decay or growth function. What if i want my y-intercept to be another value? For example i'm looking at some reach data for a social media account. This account reached say x amount of accounts on the first month i started tracking. I want the y-intercept to be something like 0.9x as this account already existed for time before i started tracking this data

When you say background, do you mean from a perspective of coding? I saw this in a forum (like chatroom) for Google sheets and used it to help my students when graphing and needing the best fit line with a y intercept = 0. Excel just has a radial box you can click on to do this, but it wasn't available on Google sheets. This LINEST () function is a way to get the linear equation with a y intercept = 0 from the data points graphed. Not sure if that was what you're asking, but that's what I got. Not with Google sheets, or at least not that I know of. You can with Excel.

I just call it a cheat because I don't know how to set the y intercept equal to zero on Google sheets. Excel has that capability when setting trendlines. For research purposes if you want to provide a linear equation starting at the origin that function let's you come up with the y=mx equation. However, I don't think the trendline changes from the original. In Excel, the trendline will adjust to represent the new equation. Hope that helps. So again, it helps you get the new linear equation, but the graph won't show the new line going through the origin.
