I love my three 5.5 gallon tanks. I have bettas in all of mine. I have my shrimp colony in with one of my bettas. He is a royal blue halfmoon betta, and I put blue dreams in with him. The shrimp have done so well I have populated 2 other tanks with shrimp from my original colony. That said my betta, Virgil, loves hunting the shrimplets, and I suspect he gets one once in a while. It isn’t enough to slow down the growth of the colony, and I have never seen him actually catch a shrimplet. He never messes with the adult shrimp. My tiny yanks are such a pleasure and so easy to keep. Thanks for sharing the pleasure found in keeping small tanks.

@@FishShopMatt The wild beta have bigger mouths than the domesticated beta do. Makes sense though considering that the wild ones are bigger everywhere to. Hahaha. They may even be able to pick off some of the smaller adult shrimp as well. But I'm not an expert. I guess it all comes down to trial and error. 🤷♀️. I had a gorgeous full moon opal beta and the only thing that he'd eat was flake food. I tried blood worms and frozen brine shrimp, and a couple of others, but he wouldn't touch them. I guess those were yucky 🤮 to him. OR he was just being a prince 🤴. LOL

@ you never know with bettas. A wild type might think you are adding them as a treat. My bettas all have long fins, so they have a harder time getting to the shrimplets. They don’t mess with the adults at all.

Nice scape & look forward to seeing your imbellis all settled in the future. Wild betta are the best IMO- After having 5 domestic betta in a row dying far too young from tumours/cancer, I decided to give wilds a go. If you can find them, I'd recommend a group of Betta Coccina (yes a group!) I started with 6 in a 60p & they readily colony breed. I've since moved some of the offspring into 90p & 120p tanks. A very under rated, interesting, outgoing & stunning species, that quickly become my favs/ 'ride or die' species- if I could only have one tank, it'd be a 60p or 90p with a group of coccina. I also have wild imbellis, siamorientalis & splendens but ended up rehoming all but one of each species after about a year as found them very shy & much less engaging compared to the coccina. They are much healthier than their domestic counter parts & just as pretty IMO, so I do love them. Being in the UK you might be able to get your hands on a pair or small group of Betta Hendra (from the coccina complex)- they are dream species for me as we can't get them imported to my country. A truly gorgeous species.

Lighter fluid cleans up residue easily, and is cheap. You can buy stuff marketed for cleaning glue junk, but it's essentially the same stuff for more money. Just squirt some on a tissue, rub it along the glass, and wipe with the dry part of the tissue. Stinks, and you'll want it well-ventilated so you don't get high, keep out of reach of children, but it's cheap and it works.

Another top video Matt. One comment. You mention when putting in the botanicals that the Betta will be able to hunt through the leaves etc. But there is nothing in the new tank for it to find. It is too clean. Adding shrimp will provide shrimplets for it to hunt down in time. But have you thought about deliberately introducing micro fauna from an established tank or pond to a new tank? Adding some ostracods would also be a good natural food source for the betta to hunt. I would appreciate your thoughts.

I do have a question though, and really appreciate if you could answer it in future videos.. when setting up a tank you almost always add beneficial bacteria when there's no ammonia in the water, and then let the tank run for a week or so. How is it possible for the bacteria to colonize without ghost feeding it or adding fish to the tank? Thank you so much!

Wild bettas are definitely betta. That species is about as good as you can get, and when that betta was flaring at the snail (it hilarious that he thinks he can intimidate a snail by flaring) he was really showing the potential of his fin colours. I will never understand why humans keep thinking that they can improve on nature when nature's shapes and colours are so wonderful to begin with. Once again, you've done a fantastic job of scaping. If you can do a great job like that in an tiny little aquarium, maybe you should consider scaping a swimming pool. I wonder what one could do with a space like that? Charge for the luxury of swimming with the fish in it? Buying a property with a swimming pool would probably be prohibitive though. You'd need to be ugly rich, and that comes with its own set of horrible problems. Cracking good job though. I always look forward to your videos for precisely that reason!
@FishShopMatt4 күн бұрын
Thank you so much! Yeah I think this little Betta is going to grow into a stunner. A scaped swimming pool would be interesting, the thing is I'll never be ugly rich I like spending money on fish too much! Hahaha
@Chompchompyerded4 күн бұрын
@@FishShopMatt Maybe it's because I share the same weakness, but I can think of much worse things to spend money on than fish. Also, show me a person who doesn't like to spend money, an I'll show you someone who is already in the grave. How much you spend seems related only to the income a person has. If you have the income of Elon Musk, you spend it on rockets which blow up when they aren't supposed to. We have more modest incomes so we must choose a less expensive way to spend any extra money we might have. Thing is, it doesn't take a lot of wealth to make these watery dream worlds and to stock it with appropriate aquatic denizens. I am currently working on my most complex and difficult build right now, and it has taken more than a three months to afford what is going into it, but that's not a problem because I wouldn't be able to build it all at once. Additionally, I have my other aquariums to maintain, so I'm never bored. When I'm done with all that, I am able to spend time watching my favourite aquarists ply the art on KZbin. I learn a quite a bit from all of you, and it is never time wasted. I'm glad that all of you are sharing. It gives me ideas and emboldens me to try them out. I owe you a debt of thanks for all you've taught me, and many others around the world. Did you ever think that you'd have an effect on the entire world? How do you feel about that? You've brought something positive to people everywhere. That's quite an accomplishment. It's something that even Kings and and leaders of powerful nations don't often accomplish. Think about it a bit, but don't let it go to your head. A simple family man reaches out to the world and gives them pleasure by sharing his interest, and his knowledge of it. I hope you are able to keep reaching out and touching people around the world, and that you have every success in this endeavour.

@FishShopMatt4 күн бұрын
Thank you! So I have a similar thing and broke one open once out of curiosity. Most of the time it's a fine fleece filter that then has carbon and ion exchange resins all mixed up. There in theory isn't anything bad in aquarium filtration components if you matched them up. You could find all the same bits just designed for aquarium filtration. If it was me I probably wouldn't risk it as there is probably some level of quality control where it's designed for human grade consumption or use in aquarium filtration.

Hi Matt, if you need a video idea, could you please consider one about getting rid of stubborn hair algae. I have a two year old tank that has recently decided to have a hair algae outbreak that I’m really struggling with. Water parameters are stable, lighting is quite good( I’ve tried reducing to 7 hrs/day. ) it has some guppies, cherry shrimps, & snail. I’m doing small water changes every other day, I’m pulling out as much as I can every day. It’s under stocked and is planted with stem plants & epiphytes. I thought maybe there was a dead fish somewhere that has thrown it off balance but water tests are all ok. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would appreciate your advice. Please & thank you 🫶🇦🇺
@FishShopMatt4 күн бұрын
I will certainly add it to the list and try and get one made. I currently have a tank that has a small issue and if I take my eyes off it for a week or two it starts to grow. Maybe I'll let that tank go under a controlled manner and then try and defeat the algae in real time in a video. One thing to look at with hair algae is if it's growing in pockets where debris can sit. Or if it is growing over the whole tank as this can then be an indicator as to if it's a localized issue of fish poop sitting in gaps or if it's something in the water.

I've had issues with my kit light not growing my plants but growing algae instead, does it have to do with the type of light or the length it is on?
@maryglover82834 күн бұрын
I have the same problem so I will be looking for the answer here.
@FishShopMatt4 күн бұрын
It could be down to a fair few factors. The type of lighting can definitely have an effect, but most aquarium lights should be ok as long as you control the other factors. If your lights are very blue this can cause algae in freshwater so it's worth checking that out. With timings I have tanks currently that have slow growing plants like Anubias and Java fern that the lights only come on for a few hours a day. I changed this over time starting with around 8 hours and slowly cutting it back until I found a happy medium. The other things that can have a huge impact on algae is how much fish waste and uneaten food is hiding in the tank. As this breaks down it will feed the algae and can cause big algae blooms. This is why gravel cleaning and water changing can be important in some setups. If you haven't got fast growing plants to out compete the algae then it can take over. Remember no two tanks are the same, some of my tanks I water change weekly and some I get away with every other week. It really varies on the amount of fish and what plants you have growing in there. If you have a lot of algae something is wrong somewhere.

Hi Matt. Really like your channel. I wonder if you could help me out with a dilemma. I've bought a Juwel Rio125 led, but I'd like to upgrade the lights to Twinstar G line 80G to fit original T5 fitting. 1. Are the lights any good. 2. Would one be enough, or should I run two because of the length? im worried i won't get enough coverage Many thanks, Julian.
@FishShopMatt4 күн бұрын
Thank you! I haven't got personal experience with the g line but twin star lights are generally good quality. I think you would probably need two of most leds to get full coverage but you will get a fair amount from one. It depends if you still want to run the lid on there? If yes then the g line may be tricky to fit. Something like the Interpet aquasmart as these can be clipped into the original T5 holders so you can keep the lid in place.

@FishShopMatt thank you for answering. The G line comes with the t5 adapters , like the fluvals, its twinstar new lights that allow you to fit under a hood.

Thankfully it's never crossed my mind with how many times you've been just hanging out waiting patiently for me to come to my device and hit play or whatever. I am curious if you have heard this before ? Since I have a lot of watch time over the 5 + years I should have a better idea of what I just related to you but hopefully it makes sense and more importantly that I assume it's not only me 😏

I'd there anything cold water or temperate that you could actually put in one of those?
@FishShopMatt4 күн бұрын
It would certainly be tricky long term as a lot of the Coldwater fish do eventually get chunky. But I think maybe some celestial pearl danios or a cool water shrimp tank would do well in here long term.

I don't know really, I've been so busy with the garage build every spare minute I have has been spent out there. We will see what the future holds but currently I'm just focused on some projects that you all know about and some you don't 😉

Off topic but are you familiar with neolamprologus gracillis, I baught 2 as they were advertised as neolamprologus brichardi, now I'm not sure if they're rock dwellers atal as they keep bullying my multies.

Really liked the scape, but the buttom glass not being perfectly flat on a surface makes me a bit nervous. This might give some limitations 🙈
@kasperkjrsgaard14474 күн бұрын
I’m sure that the makers of the aquarium have thought about that.

It's hard to see but the plastic base has a frame work in it that supports the tank all the way round so hasn't ever been an issue that I know of.

Love your videos. One exception. I think there needs to be more footage (like 30 to 40 seconds) of whatever your adding to the tank.
@FishShopMatt4 күн бұрын
Thank you! That's great feedback, it's really tricky as with KZbin you can see when people click off your video. Most of the time people click off once they've seen the fish and the tank a couple times. So it's a really fine line to tread but I will certainly try and include more footage in the future.

I love how your not a dick 😂😂it's art. Art is subjective. As long as the fish have a good environment.
