Thank you for clarifying aquascaping and what it is. I like natural scapes and not the fancy Dutch style scapes that some scapers like to do. I posted a picture of one of my tanks on a Facebook Group and a guy who claimed to be an aquascaper proceeded to tear apart my tank and instruct me on what I did wrong. Even when I explained I had been in the hobby 40 years and liked the natural style scapes he berated me. It made me angry because if I had been new to the hobby he could have turned me off. Instead, he had picked in someone that was willing to fight back a bit. He ended up telling me I was stupid and didn’t know what I was doing. Sadly, it is people like this guy that can so easily ruin the hobby for others. You are so right to say aquascaping is whatever you like your aquarium to be. I love seeing the artistic creations some people do, but I also think they have made the hobby very intimidating for others. I absolutely love your channel because it is aimed at everyone. You used Anubia, I was hoping you were going to use Buce on that dragon’s head. I like the Anubia too. I like the air pump. I generally use one in my tanks. Sometimes I will add a small sponge filter for the same reason. Love the bubbles. It is all about what makes you happy.

I hate people like this as without people coming into the hobby it will disappear. I'm glad you were strong enough to shrug it off, it's such a variable hobby there is never going to be one correct style.
@AndrewFishmanАй бұрын
Never allow someone to tell you your vision of a scape is wrong unless it is because of something that will ultimately endanger fish or people. Precariously balanced rocks that could crash against the tank face, for example. However, I have bred fish in a deliberately sterilely clean and bare tank, and others in tanks you cannot see through the algae, mulm and plant growth. Dutch style is fine, for plants, not so great for rift lake cichlids or silver dollars though. Horses for courses. I was trying to explain to a guy the other day why a flow through trickle filter was not required for a soft water planted tank for rams and tetras, he just wanted to argue that it was the best, so that was what everyone should run. OK... so why are sponges so popular?
@skrounstАй бұрын
Every hobby is like this. Every. Single. One. No matter what you do in your spare time, there are people that take that activity to the extreme, and expect everyone to do it the "right way". I quit playing World of Warcraft a year(ish) ago, because people were acting exactly like you just described. There is ONE good way to play, and if you don't play that way you don't get in groups. It made the game boring, just like it makes the fish keeping hobby boring if everyone's tank looked the same. No one other than you has to see the tank every day, so if you enjoy it, that's all that matters.
@AndrewFishmanАй бұрын
@@skrounst I quit League of Legends for similar reasons. I played a character differently to how people thought it should be played in support and consistently got S ranked in games, but people would cry that I was support and taking kills from the main attack character so preventing them levelling up. I would just ignore them and play my way, but the griefing got bad, so I just stopped playing.
@skrounstАй бұрын
@@AndrewFishman Yeah I played league for a while too, very similar vibes. Champions have pretty rigid builds, and if you deviate and try something new, or go against that set-up people will report you if your team loses lol. It seems once games have been out for 5-10 years people have theory crafted the best way to do things, and experimentation is over. LAME!!!

I have to admit, to my shame, my first aquarium was un heated in the UK .It contained white clouds, zebra danios, and bronze corydoras. When it came time to clean the tank, I would empty all the fish into the bathtub, and then clean all the filter media and gravel in the sink using boiling water. I now realize that this was not a good practice!. As a treat, I would put hot water in the bathtub, not realizing that it was harmful to the fish, and would then wonder why they swam upside down. :( I should clarify that I was 13 years old at the time and had no guidance or help.

I’ve fully upgraded the filter with better foams ceramic filter media etc and I’ve got 7 red and blue cherry shrimp 8 neons and 10 ember tetras and it’s not over stocked and I prefer lower quantities of fish, it looks so much more natural! I had also planted a lot of great plants (everything from Maidenhead aquatics 😎) and it looks amazing in my opinion for the first tank I have ever had before, I have a pond but that’s nothing compared to scaping an aquarium. I’d love to show you and see what your thoughts are! For a great dimmable light for cheap I went for the seaoura led light I can set how long its on. I can change the blue light intensity and the white light intensity or all together and it grows my plants amazingly! For £23 I’m not to disappointed

I like air stones! In fact recently I've added a USB air pump (little cylindrical one off amazon - super quiet!) and a little USB battery pack so there will at least be some agitation for a few hours if power goes out. Lots of fish seem to enjoy the bubbles too. Those interpet filters are OK but I don't love replaceable cartridges. I've got one as a second filter on a temporary/hospital setup at the moment and ended up taking the ceramic media out of the plastic holder and using it with a chunk of generic foam instead. You can definitely get loads more media in there (I added a big chunk of sponge and a big handful of extra ceramic rings), and it'll all be washable and useable for ages, where the green pad and carbon pad were definitely past their best after a couple of months. I just don't love throwing filter media away - that's got all your lovely bacteria living on it!

Highlly Recommend that you presoak any wood that you place in a fish tank. Not only can it release a lot of tannins into the water,it will be cover in dust and micro organisms that may not be that good for small fish. I usually pour boiled water over any new wood and soak for 2days changing the water alteast twice. Maybe seems extreme but am not losing any fish because of a simple things that I could of done to prevent losing Fish.

I live in a place where the power goes out sometimes and I am not willing to get fish that can’t be happy if the heater goes down. There are many fish keeping channels that talk about tropical fish but there aren’t many videos that discuss all the coldwater fish. The information would be excellent to have. Maybe a walk through the fishshop? Pointing out the fish thst would be happy without a heater?

Nice scape! Won't the minnows, when larger, be more appreciative of a longer tank? I have 7 in a 80cm shallow and they are fast little fish that use all the space. Not like other nano fish that stay more in place and move in and out of the plants and hardscape. I Like the look of the airpump, but hate the sound of the bubbles! That's why mine only run at night or holidays as back up for the filters to prive oxygen😂. Got a small airpump running right now for some cory eggs and its running me up a wall. Thankfully it gets warm enough this week to have the room ventilator on to mask the sound lol.

Check out the Australian nanoperches. They are great little fish that tolerate a wide range of temps (to about 2 degrees C low and 35 high), breed well in a tank (just bump up the temp to above 16) and are peaceful and pretty little fellas with all the attitude of a big fish packed into a 5 cm package.
