I ran my corn stalks through the chipper last year to put on my compost, and our horses found it that night and ate all of it 😄

Great idea to use the chipper! It will break down much faster that way. I do something similar with some of my yard waste with my leaf mulcher
@gardenwitheden Жыл бұрын
Thank you, it sure does break down faster this way. Thanks for watching!

I grow corn differently. I keep my corn in growing buckets until they have 5-6 leaves but water aggressively to slow the growth of secondary roots. I then transplant into bed with only 1,5 months to tasseling to avoid having to water the plants quite aggressively to get a good stand for each plant. They struggle in the beginning but a good watering or rain over the first 3 days after transplanting to a bed with plastic mulch means that the plant grows secondary roots aggressively after transplantinh and after 4 weeks, starts regaining lost ground and preparing to finish its vegetative growth stage. It works. I live in a particularly hot part of Africa, at sea level with good soil next to a natural stream but all my neighbours work pretty hard for their maize and they stunt and grow short. Mine grow up to 4m tall and set more than 1 fruit of decreasing size despite me not using any fertilizer besides some leaf mulch when my leaves fall from my trees. It is the best way to grow corn in my area and my neighbours always compliment my maize stand. I use less water and less effort to get a pretty good harvest and my are a has winds up to 50km/h so pollination is never a problem
@gardenwitheden Жыл бұрын
Very interesting! 4m is quite tall for corn plants! Corn is always such as good crop to grow. For us here in New Zealand growing corn is rather easy, we usually just direct sow then in September, October, November and December. I will be keeping an eye out on your channel for updates on your corn. Thank you for watching and commenting! 😀

Hi! I love the idea of using the chipper!! We have always sat and hand chopped out stalks up with hand clippers. This looks much easier and it mulches it up finer so it can break down easier. Pretty nifty! Thanks!! -Lea
