And they are so comfortable and lightweight when playing for extended sessions! I honestly *often* prefer Gibson - as far as factory sound. Yet i own / have owned more Fenders, and played my Fenders WAY more because they are so much more comfortable and fitting to my body type. Even a Telecaster seems to be more comfortable to play for extended time periods compared to an SG or Les Paul. Fender's necks often feel better too, but not always. - just my own personal opinion.

This is more than a beginner's strat setup lesson. It's great to have a guy like Hunter Van Houten who explains it all so plainly understandable. The Strat tremolo bridge is a wierd beast. There are lots of angles and triangles to consider. My advice, don't get in a hurry, and don't do it really late in the day when you are tired and should be sleeping. Setting up a stationary bridge can be a fair sized job let alone the tremolo bridge with it's springs and movement.

Learning how to do your own basic setups not only saves you money but it also allows you to set the guitar up to YOUR preference. I have been doing my own setups for 20 years and I love it. Taking your guitar to a music store tech can be a crap shoot sometimes in a few different respects but what I found when took my guitars to them is that even though you try to explain to them what you are shooting for they still may not hit the mark. They usually have other jobs waiting in line and can't spend the amount time that you would setting things up just the way you like them. Another reason is because setups not only effect how a guitar feels and plays but can and will effect the tone of your guitar and once you have found the right setup for a particular guitar that you like, you can repeat as needed.

Next step... intonation. Ensure you have a good strobe tuner (if possible) and lightly fret each string at the 12th fret. Ensure the note there is the note of the string. Lengthen or shorted the string at the bridge, retune, and retry. That's a pretty important step.

I feel that accuracy within any instructional medium is essential. Your guy gives a fairly clear presentation, given what it is, but when his actions are 180 degrees of what he is describing then it only serves to confuse the viewer who is attempting to adjust their action at home. Example: When he speaks of removing some of the relief/lowering the action towards the headstock, he is obviously increasing the relief buy removing tension from the truss rod. This would absolutely mess with the heads of any novice guitar DIYer who takes this video as the end-all instruction on how to do a setup. ;)
@stephentruskol1380
@stephentruskol1380 2 жыл бұрын
I wanted to read through the comments before I put mine out there to see if anyone else had noticed what you call attention to. When he makes adjustment on the truss rod he says that he is turning the nut to the right, to tighten the rod, but I see him turning the nut counter-clockwise, which is a left turn which will loosen the rod. A helpful hint is to be facing a nut you are wrenching, and think in terms of 'clockwise/counterclockwise. Adjusting the truss rods of my guitars has become the #1 piece of maintenance; it directly relates to overall performance and playability in an awesome way- not just for string height but for resonation transfer throughout the instrument.

Just start by making micro adjustments. If you start to get string buzz, back off of the adjustment. In most cases the buzz is coming from the upper frets, meaning that you may need to have a professional level and dress the upper frets and or problematic frets that are too high or uneven.

I brought my Stratocaster to my local shop this last Summer as I was having the same issue. I had it setup but I still have a fret buzz on the low E string on the first three frets. The guitar was setup nicely as it pretty much stays in tune. I guess it’s an issue I’ll have to learn to repair myself. The truss rod nut is located at the bottom of the neck. I think it’ll be a trial an era fix. A combination of truss rod, replacement of nut, and filling/replacing frets. With these videos it has giving me the encouragement to do tasks myself.

You don't need the trem parallel to body. Set the trem so that it floats as to when you fret the b string on the 12'th fret and pull up on the trem ( bottom out) it pulls a full step , then lower the saddles to desired string height. You can also use the micro tilt neck adjustment to angle the neck to get string height.

Insane..in order to match the radius of the frets to the saddles use a luthier ruler and use the bottom of each string as the height to measure to. Measure the gap from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string at the 12th fret and set to your preference height 4/64 ex from low e to high e and there ya go...that easy and exact...

Thank you for this. It helped me immensely in my setup, particularly something not mentioned directly in the video, but can be seen around 8:56. It's important when adjusting the trem system to not only keep it level with the guitar body, as mentioned, but for it to sit at the correct height above the guitar. You do this by adjusting what's often called the gross string height adjustment screws, those at the end of the trem that touches the pick guard. Note the height of the trem relative to the height of the pickguard. Most players, myself included, want to ratchet this down thinking it will lower the action. By raising it to the proper height and then lowering the individual saddles, you end up with a much better result: lower action without buzzing.

Oh man, Marty, your timing was slightly off. The other day I needed to swap the factory strings on my first strat. I watched a few tutorials on how to do this for a strat, and enthusiastically went to work. I decided to go with a heavier gauge for a different experience, and...KABLOOEY! Just as your boy said, string gauge variance impacts the bridge. A vicious cycle ensued where I found myself repeatedly tuning one string only to offset another. The next thing I knew the bridge was popping a wheelie right out the body. Cripes! I was reluctant to go messing with the guts of the guitar, because what the heck do I know about that. I really wanted to practice though, so I spent the next hours or so troubleshooting, adjusting springs and strings until it was in tune. Two days ago this would have saved me a lot of heartache, but at least it has provided me with valuable feedback. I like these tutorials. Keep up the great work.

Ive been playing for awhile and for the first time I finally attempted to float the bridge on my strat. I know its not as good as a Floyd Rose (i have one of those too) but people give Fender trem systems WAY more flack than they deserve. If you float your trem correctly then you can keep in pretty close to in tune. And i set mine so that all the way forward is a 2 1/2 step up from natural and all the back is a whole step down. Anyways alot of new players dont know you can even do that with a regular tremolo. I use to think you had to have a special type of tremolo to go forward and backwards

I am no wizard- but I have set up several of these guitars, and I always check the neck relief before adjusting saddles or nut… yes the floating tremolo bridge should be adjusted first, and all the little tricks are pretty well explained… Until you come to the relief of the neck, (which I understand) but it is explained confusingly here. It is almost necessary to have some kind of visual aid showing from a profile point of you how Neck Relief works. Also, after loosening the strings to make the relief adjustment, To my Eye, the Allen wrench is going in a loosening directions not a tightening direction… Which would put more relief in the neck. Explaining that it’s basically a bolt going into a nut at the body end and looking at it from the head side that way would avoid confusion for most people, who get righty tightly or whatever. Sorry but this kind of disappointed me when he got to the end…

Omg haven’t watched yet but this is exactly what I need! N I needed it from Marty! You’d think it’s easy but it’s taken me months of tinkering n I get anywhere from worse higher action to too perfect in the lower frets but too much buzz from either 12th up & sometimes 7th up :(

I learned this the hard way, but I’m glad I did it myself because things change and you can’t go running to a pro every time something isn’t exactly right. I bought a thrift shop Stratocaster, put heavier strings on it, and the bridge bent way up.

I learned to do all the set up and saved enough money to buy a good quality guitar. Think about that & use it as a motivator to learn set up skills. Thanks gentlemen.

Can I request for a lesson of the guitar part for “you’re my best friend” and not only the solo. For all of the parts that Brian May plays on his guitar?

Thank you so much!! This was super helpful in setting up my thrifted Squire Affinity Strat. It's sounding and playing very nicely now. It was so out of whack I can see why someone donated it lol, but now it rocks!

I’m confused about the truss rod turn adjustment. I am under the impression the truss should be viewed from the neck towards the bridge if the adjustment must be done at the neck, which means that in the video the truss rod was turned anti clockwise, loosening it and adding relief?

Looking down towards the body, tightening to the right removes convex or curve in, aiming towards straightening. Loosening to the left relaxes and allows more curve, less straightness. .012 is bandied about as a good average for relief. Players can like it anywhere between of course. Actions on slide likes high for clean, metal likes low for speed where distortion hides any minor buzzing.
