I love watching this woman explain things. So far she does my favorite you tube sewing tutorial . Some of them can take 10 min showing you haw to put on the foot,what your settings should be, all kinds of personal stuff. This lady just shows, clearly, how to do it. Thank you for keeping it short and sweet and I don't have to hear about you or the weather in your town.

I love this Hong Kong bound seam! However, I was taught that, unless the fabric is heavy or has a lot of knap, to enclose both sides of the seam in the seam binding. The raw edges are graded. What is that type of seam called?

Does the binding have to be cut on the bias? If I use fabric strips cut on the grain, will this cause problems?
@laurent41224 жыл бұрын
Bias fabric doesn't fray and is more fluid, or elastic in nature, meaning it easier to apply

This just seems like it would add bulk to the garment..i dont understand why or when this type of seamwork would be necessary? I'm asking as an amateur seamstress. I really want to know when this kind of binding would be used? This almost seems like a more... cosmetic step.
@laurent41224 жыл бұрын
It is mainly cosmetic, but can be incredible functional depending on the fabric used. The bound seam, or HongKong seam as I know it, was originally used in handmade Corsetry to prevent fraying. Personally, I use this seam for unlined jackets or coats, particularly jersey or loosely woven tweeds. Not only does it give a very satisfying look to the final seams, but it also very strong.

It would have been very useful to know that you intended to stitch-in-the-ditch (or very near to it), so that people understand right away how much needs to be folded under.

They don't ravel. They are professional and elegant.

you usually use binding seams in expensive men's jackets. The binding is usually some sort of fine fabric, georgette, silk, chiffon. If you ever look or buy a nice men's jacket or vest, the middle back will have a binding seam.

This is not the bound seam that I know. I think the Hong Kong and bound seam are 2 different things. Stiil, a useful video though.

Same thing...different names
@laurent41224 жыл бұрын
They are essentially the same seams, but can be produced in varying steps. I originally learn't a technique where you can cover both sides.
