Hi, Lisa, what a great solution to the problems brought up by antique beds, they look lovely and the boys have a fort to stretch their imagination! I not long ago found buying a set of curtains was cheaper than buying the actual fabric by the yard when I covered a headboard to match my curtains. It certainly pays to think outside the box! I have an antique rope bed and sure pleased to know how to make a bed skirt for it. Thank you. Mine has been converted too with the steel pieces and I ended up with round curtain rods mounted in back of the side rail and made a dust ruffle like a curtain to slide on the rod. Like yours so much.

When I was a child (eons ago) my mom made most of our bedspreads, clothes, etc., and she taught me. I distinctly remember that, back then, beds could be “singles” which were slightly wider than “twins”. Now I think only twins are manufactured… I love watching your channel!

You did a beautiful job! My daughter's antique iron bed was a "three quarters size" which was apparently a popular size in the late 1800s. It is smaller than a double bed, but larger than a twin. It was quite a challenge, but my husband created a wood frame that sat on top of the iron rails, transforming it to accommodate a standard or double bed mattress. Ah, those were the days! My daughter still owns the bed - it's safely stored away.

I have two antique rope beds which aren't set up for box springs. We put thick plywood, cut in the center vertically. The plywood rests on the rails and a mattress on top. The rails are longer than the antique ones so the full size mattress has room.

This turned out so nice! I’ve also used different fabrics from inexpensive curtains for: pillows, sheer or lace bed skirts, etc. I always check the thrift store first because ya just never know what gem you may discover.

My daughter's antique (subsequently higher) bed will get a bed skirt soon. I don't sew but I think I can either sew a simpler version by hand or pay a friend or dry cleaner to sew for me.

I have a antique Jenny Len bed, which is also larger than today’s twin beds. Both my mom and grandma called it a 3/4 bed. I searched and you can purchase mattresses to fit this size bed. We did choose to use a twin mattress which leaves space on both sides of the frame. Has that been your experience.

I wish so much that I could do something like this. You make it look so easy. I agree with you about old antique beds they really just withstand anything. I kinda have a really dumb question but I guess if I want to learn I have to ask what is a surger ? I’m assuming it’s an option that comes on sewing machines and not all have them, with that being said would you happen to have a recommendation on a good starter sewing machine? I really want to learn mostly to start making curtains, bed skirts maybe eventually a chair slip cover. If all that goes well I would then love to attempt cute little girl dresses, simple one piece rompers etc. Thank you for all the great videos you post I always love them. Thank you for any recommendations you can give me on a decent starter sewing machine I want one that’s easy to use but will take me a little more than just a beginner if that makes sense lol.. take care of them kiddos n yourself my friend 😘

Hi Kim, I have a whole post about the basic sewing essentials for beginner sewers with links to machines and other supplies. Having a nice finishing stitch also helps the fabric fibers not to unwind in the washer and drier. That is a lot of added weight on those old beds. Is that platform for the mattresses just setting on those 4 iron brackets? That bed may not be able to hold that for long.

Hi Frank, every machine is a little different yours should have come with a owners manual which will have directions for threading and basic operation. If you don't have the book maybe find the exact model and google it to find out how to do this. Hope that helps you.
