Thank you for posting this video. Lately I've had my own struggles with working on a sewing project that fought me at every step. It's good to know that I am not alone and that we all go through it sometimes. I feel encouraged and work on the project again.

You can do it! But I want to and wish I had of said it’s ok to toss away a project that is not bringing you joy! I missed out on weeks of sewing things that could of helped me through a really rough start to summer just to prove what? That I have a high tolerance for pain! 😂😂 I’m happy I finished it but I’m realizing I would of been just as happy throwing this in the UFO pile ♥️ Happy Sewing! That’s what I want for us all ♥️

I started using vogue early in my sewing journey and quickly learned they are difficult in a magical way lol. Most of them require a lot of attention and exact adherence to the instructions. pieces don't appear to match in a logical way then magically it comes together. Your skirts came out beautiful tho. I'm glad youtube made me discover your channel 🙂

Drew, I'm so impressed by your persistence, and positive outlook, even when that pattern was trying to take you out!😅 One minute you were calling it quits, the next you were back at it. You won the battle by sticking it out! I like how the blue one turned out. For sure, I'm still not ready to try a Vogue pattern!

Thank you!! I have mixed feeling still about this one. I’m half glad I stuck it out but I also wish I had of called it quits sooner or at least started a new project as sort of a palette cleanser. But I am at the end of it all proud of myself. Not of the skirts they are horrible 😂😂 But I am proud of me. Thank you for always being so supportive ♥️

I was thinking about you today! It is so glad to see another video from you! My goodness, just hearing the frustration in you voice - I cannot imagine. You really challenged yourself this time and that is amazing. Getting that eureka moment is also a great high. I think they looked great, but would save for very special occasions. I can definitely see you coming back to this pattern a few years from now

I've missed your face and your videos! I appreciate how real you keep it when it comes to sewing. I love to sew as well, but I understand that sometimes, the vision just doesn't happen the way you want it to. I have a dress that I fumbled on in February that is still sitting in my sewing room closet. That messed up my mojo for months, and I'm just now really getting back into it. I will fix and finish the dress eventually, because I refuse to throw it out. Thanks for sharing your journey and for the encouragement. Be blessed and happy sewing!

Thank you and you are so right! I wish I had of called it on this one sooner! It’s the KZbin part. I was editing as I went and it was occupying not just my sewing room but my computer and was taking up so much space in my brain. Every time I picked it up I had the thought too far to turn back now. But boy was I wrong and I learned so much! If it’s a mojo stealer kick it out the sewing room. That goes for partners, pets and small kids as well! 😃

So glad you're back!! 😆😆 I'm so happy to see you got your 'sewing mojo' back. A Vogue pattern zapped me of mine too...and then I didn't sew anything for a year 😅. But after watching some videos on here, I realized that it's the pattern (and notoriously Vogue ones) and not my skills as a sewist like I first thought. A Vogue "easy sew" dress pattern was my first attempt at sewing after 10 years away 😂and it was a dud. But it was a good experience (after I stopped being mad 😅) and taught me to 1) make mock ups!!, and 2) you can alter a pattern to get the right fit you need, not just take the sizing they suggest *should* fit you (this was the main issue). Proud of myself for putting in pockets and actually finishing a hem though because I rarely ever finish a garment 😅. I had to admit that I *did* have fun making it and learning new techniques. So sometimes it's not about the finished garment, but about the journey along the way...though cool clothes from all that effort would be nice haha. I'm excited to continue on this journey with you!! Best of luck with everything!! Also, thank you for your service bc I was thinking about getting this pattern too but now...I'll sit this one out 😂

Vogues are for true seamstresses!!! I’m glad you were able to find joy in the process and learning new techniques! I need to work on that. I’ve been saying. That my entire sewing journey!! I had to slow down and enjoy the process! That’s the whole point of sewing! Have fun enjoy learn and relax. This pattern held none of those things for me!

Glad you are back! I took a look at the pattern - it’s cut on the cross grain (not the bias) and as you said with more structured fabric like a faille, heavy linen, duchess satin. You were basically sewing on hard mode - an asymmetric pattern, with drapey fabric on the bias. I think you did a great job considering all the challenges! Good on you for sticking it out.

@@SewSewDrew I learned about sewjo from Sian over at Kittenish Behavior, she’s a machine getting projects done at times but when the sewjo is mia she’s posting about her missing sewjo and how she’s trying to get it back. My sewjo has been gone for over a year now. I’m trying to figure out how to overcome my adhd paralysis and just do it. But I’m stuck, more therapy is needed

The oly time i have ever cried with a pattern was when i had my first vogue. You have to really take your time. Like lay the pattern on the fabric then walk away for a while before you cut it. Then read the directions again before you cut it.

Hi Drew. From the disaster on both you got two lovely skirts out of it. Admittedly the blue needs to be slightly shorter otherwise it is fine. Don't give up on vogue patterns as you don't have that much trouble when you sew vintage ones just stay away from modern ones from vogue.

Congrats on 10k! I think the big 4 pattern companies are dated in that 1. their sizing is still very narrow 2. they assume people have all this knowledge which we don't anymore because sewing isn't passed down like it was generations ago because it isn't a necessity like it was then 3. because of all this these patterns are hard to understand because you don't know what you do not know. I think this skirt pattern is weird also, it just lays weirdly like they tried to reinvent the wheel and it just didn't work. I think the indie pattern companies do a better job BY FAR of making their patterns user-friendly and inclusive and as a result, you have a far better success rate. Hang in there, its just one pattern :)

Both skirts look good despite all the hassle you had with the pattern and it's instructions. I'm so sorry that you had a devil of a time with it, and I agree that you should probably stay away from Vogue Patterns for a while. At least until you've gained more sewing experience. Personally, I've never tackled a Vogue. Mostly because their highest size is way too small for me. I don't call myself the Plus Size Costumer for nothing. 😂 I had a sewing teacher who said that the first thing all dress makers should do, especially when trying a new to you pattern, is read the instructions. Don't even think about putting scissors to fabric until you have. I see too many videos of makers that just plow ahead with a new pattern and then wonder why they're having a problem with pieces not going together correctly. Then the second thing do is to read the instructions again, and this time make notes where you think you might have some problems, or where there's a particularly confusing section, to make sure you understand what they're telling you. Third is to gather your materials together. Then, read the instructions a third time to make sure you didn't skip over a step in the first two readings. Highlight the sections where you're still confused with a highlighter. I like the Sharpie Gel highlighters. They're like a crayon, not ink, so they don't bleed through the other side of the paper that the instructions are printed on, nor do they dry out. I've got couple of them that I've had for about 5 years and they still highlight stuff. If a particular instruction is still confusing, make a sample to help you figure it out. I know that sounds like a waste of time, but, if you take the time, you'll be happy you did the sample. And, you can refer back to it if the instructions start to get confusing again. I hope this helps. I look forward to your next project.

This definitely helps! I’ve always wanted to get to “the good part” which has left me with so many disappointments. Every garment I’ve made that I love is one where I did the things you mention above. Read instructions. Alterations. Mock-ups etc. I just went fabric shopping and now that I’m using app wrap fabric more and not inexpensive quilting cottons I will definitely be taking my time to ensure I get a final garment that stands the test of time and is time well spent. Thank you for always being so supportive ♥️♥️♥️

@SewSewDrew Mock-ups are good for fitting, but small samples help to figure out and understand just one particular technique. That way you have practice doing the technique and you haven't used up a bunch of fabric on multiple mock-ups. In fact, the school where I was taking sewing classes had a Fashion Design and Merchandising department, and all the students needed to make samples of different techniques for their portfolio. If I was to do sewing classes somewhere that's something I'd require my students to do so they would have basic knowledge of how things are made. Some of the samples were simple things like seams, seam finishes, different types of zipper installation, figuring out how much fabric is needed for specific amounts of gathering fullness, different types of pleats, and a whole lot more. And with each class the difficulty level would get more involved. I had been sewing for about 50 years by the time I took these classes and thought I knew just about anything there was to know about sewing. These classes showed me that I didn't. And I still have my sample book.
