Peg, Can't thank you enough for your clear, concise instructions. I love making pillows, but have been a bit intimidated by adding the zipper to a pillow with piping. You make it seem so eazy-peazy!

I'm not new to sewing or even. My mom had an upholstery and drapery shop so, I have been around and involved in it, most of my life. I primarily quilt now. I had decided I needed to redo my bay window cushions and make pillows to go with the cushions. Box cushions with zippers are a pain, but I managed with lots of help from you tube. This video has helped tremendously with the pillows. I've watched several and this one is by far, the easiest and precise. My mom is gone, so I had nobody to ask, when it got frustrating. Thank you, so much.

I love watching your tutorials, so well done and straight to the point without the unnecessary chatter that you see in other tutorials. I did wonder though why you didn't stitch a stopper over the end of the zipper that you had cut off meaning the toggle would slide right off.
@PegBakerSlipcovers7 жыл бұрын
Dear Jacqui, Thank you so much for writing. Your kind compliments are deeply appreciated. Your comment about the zipper stopper is a very good one! The way the zipper is sewn in usually prevents the toggle from coming out. However, since then, I began tagging my pillow zippers after that tutorial to ensure the toggle would stay in place. A tutorial about tagged zippers is in the works but I have not completed editing it. (Business and family demands have kept me occupied!) You may have tried tagging yourself. Let me know if this response is helpful. I'm here if you have further questions. Sincerely, Peg. www.littlebugslipcovers.com

@PegBakerSlipcovers5 жыл бұрын
Dear Fiona, Thank you for writing. I bought those scissors about 20 years ago (2 pair) at a fabricators trade show. They are still very sharp and are great for notching and trimming thick layers of fabric. Here's a link for Wolff USA wolffindustries.com/collections/scissors/products/wolff®-7-5-straight-large-handled-utility-shear. They are about $25 each; WORTH IT! Best wishes for a great experience. Excellent tutorial, great tips and a beautiful finished pillow to be proud of. I was wondering is it possible to make this zippered pillow with piping and create a pocket on the back panel half way up. Maybe to insert a book or remote, etc.
@PegBakerSlipcovers8 жыл бұрын
+Country Echoes Thank you for writing; your kind words are appreciated! Your idea for a pocket is excellent. Yes, you certainly can add a pocket to the back. Are you wondering how it should be done, or are you just concerned about it affecting the piping? Let me know so I'll be able to answer you accurately. Sincerely, Peg
@countryechoes42518 жыл бұрын
Yes I am totally confused on how to make it and afraid it could mess up the piping. Any suggestion would certainly be appreciated. I am making this patchwork pillow for my mom who was just placed into a nursing home. I wanted her to have a place to put her phone and something pretty on her bed. Thank you
@PegBakerSlipcovers8 жыл бұрын
+Country Echoes What a lovely idea! Adding a pocket in the back can done in a couple of ways. Since you are making a patchwork pillow, I am thinking you may have to be considering the amount of bulk in the seams. If so, I recommend adding a "patch" pocket on the back with a velcro closure to help keep the contents of the pocket securely inside. Am I on the right track? Peg
@countryechoes42518 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right on track, I never thought of adding a patch pocket, what a great idea. What I was thinking was to make the entire lower back half the envelope part and just add binding acrost to define the envelope. But then I realized I probably would have a really bulky seam where the piping attaches. I will try the patch pocket with Velcro. Thank you so much for your prompt response. I certainly appreciate everything.

Hi Peg, I just got back into sewing and I love your clear and concise explanation on how to sew piping and zipper on a pillow. I have two questions, have you ever sewn an invisible zipper on a pillow with piping and do you have a video for it and what brand rotary knife do you use for cutting bias strips for piping? I know they can be expensive and I want to make sure I purchase one that truely works well. Thanks very much!
@PegBakerSlipcovers8 жыл бұрын
Dear Angela, Thank you for writing! I am happy to hear that my little tutorials have inspired you to return to this great craft! As for your questions: FIRST: I use Olfa brand rotary cutters and blades. Yes, they can be very expensive so wait for a sale and then purchase your cutter and blades. I use 45mm blades mostly, although I do have the smaller cutter and blade as well. SECOND: Yes, I occasionally use invisible zippers on pillows and cushions with piping. I refer to the Haberman Fabrics tutorial to refresh my memory and have had good results. However, I don't do invisible zippers very often so I usually practice a bit on a remnant first. The link for that tutorial is at the end of this message. Please let me know your thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you again. Thanks for the tutorial. How much would you normally charge for the labor on a pillow like this for a client ?
@PegBakerSlipcovers10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind comment. I have a $25 minimum for any order. Otherwise, my prices are based on $25/hour. One pillow with piping and a zipper would be $25. If the order is for 4 pillows and, if I complete the job in 3 hours, the charge would be $75. Based on the time records I've kept over the years, I've been able to set prices for the items I sew for often, but I find that sometimes the price should be higher and, occasionally, lower. If you'd like more information on pricing, please write to me at littlebug903@yahoo.com. I look forward to hearing from you again! Peg

Hi there. Loved the video. A huge help. I do have a question. My fabric is not heavy fabric. It is quilters cotton. Should I double up my fabric and use two layers for the top and two layers for the bottom to make it stronger. I could maybe do some quilting as well to hold the two layers together. What is your opinion on this?
@PegBakerSlipcovers3 жыл бұрын
Dear Karen, Thank you so much for writing. Your question is a good one: one that I've had to consider many times when I sewed for others with their own fabric. First, a quilted pillow would look lovely. If you decide to try this option, you may find that adding piping adds quite a bit of bulk. The beauty of quilting may eliminate the need to add piping as an additional detail. Second, you could try adding a lightweight interfacing to your cotton calico. It could be an iron-on that, after applying, would become like a single fabric. Lastly, you could making your project (a pillow?) with only your calico. This would be acceptable for a project that does not get high use, but is purely decorative. Let me know your thoughts and any addition questions. I'm here for you. Sincerely, Peg

Great video thank you I am about to make a knife edge pillow with piping and a zipper. Question, where did you get that great iron?
@PegBakerSlipcovers7 жыл бұрын
Dear Sally, Thank you so much for writing. The iron is this video is a Rowenta ProProcision Micro Steam 400. It was the fourth Rowenta I've used over the years and I've been a big fan, even though, with heavy use, these irons will only last about 3 to 5 years. I keep my iron on a rolling cart next to my sewing table for stability. This particular model is no longer made; I found this one on Amazon.com. www.amazon.com/dp/B016YPR502/ref=asc_df_B016YPR5025276208/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B016YPR502&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198125962684&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13383246179355227131&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007691&hvtargid=pla-321339526758. As a rule, I never purchase maintenance plans, but it might be worth it on this item; it's very difficult to find people who repair these anymore. Let me know if you have any other questions. Sincerely, Peg www.littlebugslipcovers.com
