How to sew an invisible hem

This type of stitch is called a catch stitch and is great for when you need to hem heavier/thicker fabrics. Provided you select a thread that matches the colour of your garment, the stitch is virtually invisible from the outside.

THANK YOU! Your tutorial was perfect for hemming my daughter's prom dress that had a 1" wide structured interfacing in the hem. I was able to fold and press it over as you showed and the invisible hem looks so good! You are a lifesaver because I could not find any instructions on hemming that kind of gown. Great easy-to-follow instructions too! Have a great day!

Hi, if you start at the other end from what they have, anchor your thread as they do and then insert your needle into the top rolled part of the hem so that you can't see your needle and then bring the needle back out about three quarters of an inch further along the hem and then catch the couple of threads of the dress itself and then back into the top of the hem again and repeat this until you are back to the starting place and anchor it again. This will give you a proper invisible stitch as the only part of the cotton that is visible is the stitches that attach to the dress. If you only take a couple of threads it should be invisible on the front of the dress as well. The secret to the rolled hem is not to try and fold too much fabric into the rolled hemmer and to hold the dress firmly with your fingers on the bed of the machine a couple of inches away from where the foot is while letting the rolling part of the hem feed through fairly loosely. If you hold the rolling part too tightly it will want to go straight and not around the curve as it should. Only doing a couple of inches at a time will give you more control as well.

I have been sewing for more than 50 years, I started in Jr. High School. I would never hem any garment with the catch stitch in this video! Back in the day we were taught that a properly hemmed garment that looked like it was professionally done was made with stitches that were hidden. I always referred to the stitch that I used as a blind stitch but I just did a bit of googling and I found that the stitch I am referring to is a slip stitch. Google says that a catch stitch is used for tacking or hemming lined garments. It is a zig zag stitch that helps prevent your fabric from fraying along the edges. The stitch in this video would work to hem garments but if you are going to take the time to hand stitch why not make both sides of the garment look neat and professional?

I love this tutorial!!! Simple but clear in giving instruction. I'm wondering, is this invisible hemming hand stitch also be done in professional garment or only just for personal use? I find it really neat and sleek on my dress from the outer but not as great as when we buy cloth on store (sometimes I saw double stitch too) and I have no idea how to hem wider, sleeker and neater with machine. To be honest I love the result of this handstitch.

This is the best video for hem ! Before writing this comment, I came across a KZbin video in Hindi language; that video was not worth watching even one single time. And, one of the viewer of that video had commented , one year ago, to make the hem/turpai video again, as it was not clearly visible. The maker of that Hindi video did not even bother to answer to the comment. I read that comment, just few minutes before ! But, before watching that video in Hindi, I had watched this video! So, instantly, I shared the link of this video on hem with the viewer of that Hindi video! Please, keep making videos like this one on sewing or on anything you think people should know of! All the best!

I love that stitch but I know it as the Herringbone stitch. The catch stitch is worked from right to left without the little x at each stitch where the thread crosses over. The hem allowances are too wide for a nice drape with most fabrics, hems look so much more professional with a narrower allowance or better yet a rolled hem on the machine. Just my opinion.
