How to sew Best Fitting, Washable, Reliable, and Reusable Coronavirus Face Mask!
Here are the three patterns. Draw and cut out the sewing pattern of your choice. Now that you have your pattern, you need fabric, elastics and pipe cleaners.
When choosing your fabric, check if the breathability is ok. A fabric like this one can’t be used as a mask because it is hard to breathe through. This one is see-through, so it will barely give you any protection. This one is a better choice because it’s thick enough to be protective but also has airflow.
Place the pattern onto the doubled fabric. The side of the pattern that has frills sits on the fold. Leave 1-1.5 cm extra on the cut edges.
Mark 5 cm from each corner of this cut edge. Sew over both markings, leaving an opening in the middle. To stop the fabric from fraying, use the zigzag stitch. My sewing machine’s zigzag stitch is not working properly. Mark the half point. Hold and sew the cut edges together. Using the hole that is left, turn the mask inside out.
Place your pattern on the mask so that the frills are on the fold. Transfer the pattern markings to the fabric.
Fold the ruffles downward from the pipe cleaner edge.
Cut the pipe cleaner and put it into the mask through the hole. Push it against the edge that was marked for it and sew it into the place. On the opposite side of the pipe cleaner, right in the middle, sew the marked dart.
You need two 6 cm elastics for the XL/XXL mask, two 5cm for M/L, and two 4cm for XS/S. All of the masks also need two 30 cm elastics. Seal the ends of the elastics with a lighter to stop fraying.
Place a 6cm elastic over a 30 cm one with a 70-degree angle and sew it. Do the same for the second set just remember that they are mirrors.
Attach the 30 cm elastics to the corners of the pipe cleaner edge. Sew the 6cm elastic to the corners of the dart edge.
Fold a paper towel and insert it into the mask. Your mask is ready to use! If you are in contact with many people, make several masks and change them often. Make sure to wash them with soap and hot water, but don’t forget to replace the paper towel.
