In this video, I demonstrate how to turn a yard of flannel fabric into a baby receiving blanket. I like that these blankets are a little larger than most store-bought versions. At the end of the video I share a few ways I've used my blankets with my 8 children (soon to be 9!)

I make receiving blankets one and a half yards long. It’s much bigger and can be used longer for the little one. I also make baby quilts one and half yard long and back them with flannel. Everyone loves them. I do love her little one yard blankets for tiny baby swaddling. also they are useful for years. For my first child, he is now 51 years old, born before pampers were common, we used our left over receiving blankets for diapers for nighttime. They were thicker and saved many a wet bed in the mornings. I am loving watching Andrea’s sweet videos. I am sending them to my granddaughters to watch.

Hi, great video. I wanted to let you know that the ironing does help, but I also found that if you put little slits in the corners about every quarter to half inch that it’s easier for the fabric to give on the corners. I also use a special Foot on my sewing machine that helps create that tiny seam and helps to roll the fabric over. It’s called a rolled hem presser foot. it looks so professional. Do you think this could also be done on a plain square blanket? How would you do the corners if it were square?

I'm a member of a group that crochets, knits and sews for local hospital and some are shipped to farther areas. We make baby hats, baby & children blankets, burp rags, chemo caps for the hospitals; blankets, hats & scarves for the homeless shelters etc. I am always on watch for good deals on baby material for these needs. Most of the time I just serge the edges of the blankets and rags in a tight stitch while I pray over each one and the recipient. I had not thought about rounding the corners. I'm going to see how that works with my serger. Your blankies are beautiful, love the colors and patterns. Do you use burp rags? Do you make them?

I think I was taught to sew "old school." I always had to wash, dry and iron the fabric before doing anything with it. Now, because I am chemically sensitive I wash fabric to get rid of any scents, dye residue or sizing. It looked to me like you didn't wash or iron the fabric first, and I am assuming it is one of the many ways you save time and energy, but I am wondering if you have ever had an issue because the fabric was still wrinkled or un-shrunk?

I was taught all of those things, too, but it's not my nature to waste time doing things I don't find particularly beneficial or enjoyable. (Ask Tom... he teases me about it sometimes!) The only time I ever bother with washing first is if I'm making something very "tailored" or form fitting. Those days are pretty much past for me, though! :) I did make sure all the wrinkles were ironed out the edges I was sewing so they'd be nice and flat.

I've still only used it to make these blankets, so I don't have a lot to say about it yet. It seems very smooth running and quieter than my other machine (not that the other was loud and rough... it's just different.) One of these days I need to just sit down and play with it. Knowing me that'll be a year from now! :)

When Maxwell was born, my big boys each made him a burp cloth by hand. It was a glorious crafting day for them, at 12 & 13 they still talk about it. I saved them with stuff I'll save forever & I'll give it to them when they each have their first child. (now I'm getting all emotional lol)

if I want a square, I buy 1 1/4 so it winds up being 43"-44" square. It's great for swaddling babies as they are growing...they can't break free as easy. lol
