personally I found convinient to do the sewing like they were buttons; I used a button foot, set a zig zag stitch to 0 length and manually adjust the width so that it would saw orizontally from one eye to the other. (then I just operate the sewing machine shortly until it does 5 or so stitches) also i saw a stitch with that same technique at the beginning with a big needle in between to then take the needle out and insert the tip of the hook... but in That case I'll try out your method instead as it seem better

did you already try cleaning, oiling and adjust the tension? (I krow it basic, but just in case)
