This tutorial has come in handy as of recently my hat has become worn over the years I had worn it as a Russian the trapper hat as I refer to ushanka has been apart of my life as long as I remember the hat means a lot more than anyone knows the hat I’ve had for so long has been worn out with love I’ve decided that a fresh start is needed with a new hat to create new memories despite being created for winter use I worn my ushanka everyday and will continue to with my new ushanka of my own. Спасибо за этот очень полезный учебник я вернусь чтобы создать больше своих собственных!!

I own an ushanka with a wind breaker style fabric. The rustling isn't so bad, but I can tell you it muffles quite a bit of sound so it will be harder to hear.

I would say this is probably more of an intermediate (or advanced beginner) project...I wouldn't consider it too complicated, but I would definitely not recommend this for a first project. However, once you get comfortable with the basics, I would say to give it a try!!

Thank you so much for the kind comment, I’m so glad you like it! I used a sewing machine, but you could definitely sew it by hand. It would take a bit of time, but is small enough of a project that it probably wouldn’t be unreasonable.

Actually, this is a trapper hat. The ushanka is completely fur on the outside, not just on the flaps.
@MothandRustDIY
@MothandRustDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the comment!! Yes, this could also be called a trapper hat. As someone who is clearly very sharp, you probably also noticed I called this a ushanka *style* hat....not an accurate reproduction of a historical style. (Heck, I didn't even use real fur...!) 😉 In the end, I found "ushanka" was the best term for me to use, as far as SEO goes, so that's what I decided on.

Can I make this as well in leather? Theturning out and inof the fabric could showdifficult with stiff leather. I plan this to do with leather anf man made fur.
@MothandRustDIY
@MothandRustDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the question! I believe you're right; it might be difficult to turn if you're using stiff leather. If you're able to sew it, though, a softer leather would probably work fine.

@MothandRustDIY

That's not a dumb question!! Technically, you could sew the opening shut and tack the flap up by machine if you were working with thinner materials...however, sewing on the shank type of button would still need to be done by hand. Thanks for asking, Laura--I hope this was helpful!

I made your hat using soft deer skin leather for the outside, flannel lining and muskrat fur. It is too big and I recognize that I failed to follow your instructions of a half inch seam when joining everything. But It's way too big and I am wondering if it is more than the 1/2" seam allowance that is an issue. How would I make my next hat smaller?
@MothandRustDIY
@MothandRustDIY Жыл бұрын
Oh no, I'm sorry it turned out too big! For reference, printed as is, this pattern should fit comfortably about 22". The only thing I can think of would be if you could print the pattern a slightly smaller percentage. I would say use something cheaper but bulky like fleece to make the second one, to see if it fits better, before moving on to more precious materials. If you can rip the seams on your existing one, you might be able to resew with a larger seam allowance and still have it work. I hope this is helpful!
@frankroberts3868
@frankroberts3868 Жыл бұрын
@@MothandRustDIY I'm going to try it again with your direction of 1/2" seam allowance. I think that's the problem or you would have other questions about the sizing.

HI My head circumference is 56cm/22 inc. Will this pattern fit me?
@MothandRustDIY
@MothandRustDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for the question!! Depending on the thickness of the inside fur or lining you use, this fits about 21" to 22". However, if you think it needs to be a little bigger, I would recommend adding a half inch or so to the back fold/seam. I hope this is helpful!
@viyprospekt
@viyprospekt Жыл бұрын
question, how would i adjust this for a 24” circumference? i’m a bit confused what “back fold” means on the website
@MothandRustDIY
@MothandRustDIY Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question! By back fold, I'm referring to the part of the pattern that would be placed on the fold of your fabric when cutting out your pieces. (It should be indicated on the printed pattern.) To adjust up to 24", I would probably recommend adding 1/2" to the back (the fold are) of the pattern, and also adding 1/2" to the front part. By spreading out the increases more evenly, it shouldn't change the shape of the hat too drastically. I hope this is helpful!!
@viyprospekt
@viyprospekt Жыл бұрын
@@MothandRustDIY thank you for your response! a few more things (sorry, pattern alteration is still somewhat new to me), the “front part” is difficult to determine, would it work just adding a 1/2” all around the pattern? and i’m assuming this is done on all three pieces?
@MothandRustDIY
@MothandRustDIY Жыл бұрын
@@viyprospekt No worries, I am glad to answer any questions!!! I probably wouldn't add the extra width all the way around. If you're looking at the assembly diagram on my blog, the pattern piece at the top is the outside piece; the left side is the back, and the right side (opposite the back) is the front. The longer tab sort of part at the bottom left is the ear flap, and the shorter tab toward the right is the front/forehead flap. The bottom right pattern piece is the bottom part of the lining (it's actually mirroring the outside part, but I only did that for the sake of saving space when I laid out the pdf pattern.) So, in total, I would add 1/2" to the front and back of the outer piece and the bottom lining piece. You probably don't have to add anything to the round piece that is the upper lining, but just to make sure you do have enough to work with, you could enlarge that circle by 1/4" (you might end up with a larger seam allowance for that, but it shouldn't hurt anything.) I hope this is helpful and not more confusing! I know I just said a LOT... 😅

Hi Luke! You can find the pattern here: mothandrustdiy.com/ushanka-hat-with-faux-fur-lining-free-pdf-pattern/ You should be able adjust the size slightly by adding or subtracting an inch or so from the back and front seam edges. I hope that's helpful!

@MothandRustDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your question, Megan! For the outside, you will need about 1/2 yard, and you should be able to use about 3/8 yard (maybe less) for the lining...however, with both, you should end up with a good deal of extra fabric.

I have not worked with real fur so I can't give much advice, but if you are comfortable working with it, I can't see why it wouldn't work! :D It may require a different type of sewing machine, though. I believe leather sewing machines are quite a bit sturdier.
