Mr Robert, Thanks for the great instructional videos here on KZbin. I am waiting for my Cats Claw Sharpener and two tooth setter from Cook in August. I have made up the electric motor brush cleaner and it works great cleaning rust and debris from the blades. I also made the 3" PVC cap with sponge for mounting once I receive the machinery. Did you mount the cap to the right side metal side plate with machine bolt through cap to hold in place for blade to slide through? I have built white oak and red oak work stations for these to set on in the shop. My sawmill is a Cook MP-32 16' length logs motorized head and motorized carriage. Several folks around us here have Woodmizer LT-15s. I am getting cams for Cook and Woodmizer blades 7/8" 8 degree to start with. Thanks again for sharing your valuable knowledege. @TCSawmills

We are just using some wire wheels we had, 2 of them sandwiched together. Don't believe a CBN wheel would work on a cooks due to there not being any cutting fluid and the design of the cam sweeping the blade. He now has 2 woodmizer BMS 250 sharpening systems in addition to his catclaw.

I have a chain saw mill. It is interesting that there’s is no angle to the grind . Sharpening chain saw ripping blade you angle the grind 10˚ left or right. I realize the teeth re very different , but it is still surprising hat the cutting surface is perpendicular to the blade. Great video , very informative ,thanks !

Please forgive me if I am silly but...Blades are made by first cutting the tooth and gullet. That process causes the sharpening of teeth. Then the teeth are set left, right and left center. So the sharpened edges are twisted away from when formed. In contrast,,,,,We sharpen a dull blade with the teeth set. So our sharpened teeth derive a very different (and uniform) cut angle. This does not seem to be what occurred initially during blade formation,. Am I incorrect?

I have snapped a few teeth off of Ripper 37 blades while setting. Is this usually caused by the anvils pushing too close to the tip of the tooth? Or too far down (towards the gullet)??
@TCSawmills
@TCSawmills 3 жыл бұрын
From Mr.Robert: Too close to the tip is the more common cause . Blades vary in hardness: never set your anvils too close to the tip. Start your set with at least 1/16 of the tooth above the anvil. You may have to drop down even farther. If you have dial indicators on your setter, check to see that you are not over setting. If you have stationary indicators on your setter, recheck the set with a handheld indicator. Ripper blades are one of my favorite blades to set. Hope this is helpful.

@@TCSawmills Tell Mr. Robert thank you from me! This helps. I have the same sharpener/setter that he does (cooks cat claw sharpener, and cooks dual tooth setter). I recently switched to Rippers and the first 2 blades I tried to set, I broke 5 or 6 teeth off, and was not sure what I was doing wrong. The next ones I try to set, I will raise the blade so that the anvils are lower down on the teeth. I set at 18-20 thousanths. Thanks again!

By sweeping the whole profile you are dead heading any micro cracks. You don't need to do too much but a little goes a long way and provides a better cutting blade that lasts longer. I have no idea why people only hit the tooth face.

Why don't people build circular saw mills much any more. Do the circular blades not last alot longer , cut much faster, eleviate the problems with southern pine as far as the resin and eliminate wavy cuts? Trying to decide what to buy etc to possibly get into it.
@TCSawmills
@TCSawmills 2 жыл бұрын
There are a few out there, the smaller scale lucas and Peterson swing blades are a good option. But on the lager scale a circle saw is expensive due to all the equipment required to run such an operation. A lot more capital investment but higher production. I prefer the portable bandsaw mills like my timberking 2000. They can do pretty much anything and aren't fixed to one location. There are pros and cons to each type of mill but I will choose a bandsaw of a circle saw any day. Far more versatile for the cutting I do. I prefer to cut large (wide) unique live edge slabs. On my bandsaw mill I have more capabilities to do that. If I was cutting cross ties and dimensional lumber a circle saw would do just fine.

If you can see any reflection on tip of tooth, it's dull.. If blade sounds angry, it's dull.. Give blade a shot of oil/diesel while still spinning on mill just before removing. It will clean blade & protect it until sharpening..
