A guy who used to work for my Uncle years ago doing Auto Recycling, his name was Frenchie, and he used to get his knife razor sharp by stropping it on cardboard, which he cut his finger almost half off with his knife one day when he was only holding it lightly with two fingers, he was trying to cut off some dangling threads on this kids shorts. He also used to be able do 100 push-ups within a minute, he was a cool dude, and he used to show me all kinds of things, like how he sharpened his knife and all kinds of other cool stuff. Anyhow, I just wanted to add how he used cardboard to strop his knives. You definitely make some beautiful and bad ass knives, I wish I could afford to buy one from you, but unfortunately I'm as poor as a church mouse, because I'm Disabled and can't work anymore, which I had to stop working about 9 year's ago and I've been severely struggling every since, but I've been fighting Social Security for my disability case since 2009, which they kept denying me although I'm disabled under the law, and I don't know how they can keep getting away with denying when I'm Disabled under the law, it's total BS, but that's the Government for you. I've subscribed to your channel, keep up making the beautiful knives you make. 😎👍

Taking such care with knives limits what you are willing to do with it. IE: make a pilot hole for tent pegs when the dirt is too hard to push or hit them in or dig holes when without a proper digging tool 🤠 I keep a flat bastard file attached to the sheath so a few quick files strokes has the knife sharp again I deliberately keep a burr on the blade - yes I can shve with such a blade

Hello, I'm thinking to give me a knife of high quality, to be used for outdoor / survival, specifically a clone S4 of Bear Grylls, so I was thinking of the best stainless steel to use, based on your experience can be a RWL34 good steel for this knife?
@yolomcswagginz1034
@yolomcswagginz1034 8 жыл бұрын
+Michele Trekkning High quality and stainless do not mix... Maybe for a knife you use every day and don't care about its edge like a kitchen knife or a knife you hardly use like a defense knife. But overall, just use another steel thats harder but retains its shape. Tool steel is too brittle while stainless isn't brittle enough to keep shape. It's not that hard to keep a knife from getting rusty. If you get it dirty, clean it with water and just dry it out with a cloth its not hard and really won't cause problems.

Excuse me but I did not understand, for a survival knife as which ones S4 of Bear Grylls in your opinion can be a big steel?
@lsubslimed
@lsubslimed 7 жыл бұрын
Yolo McSwagginz Your knowledge of steel is seems to be stuck in the last century 🤔. As a knife maker, I personally like working with non-stainless steels, however there are plenty of stainless as well as tool steels that perform many tasks extremely well. Just a small list of some tools steels that make great knives ( in no particular order) would be W2, W1, O1, L6, A2, D2, 3V, M4 and so on... Same thing with stainless steels such as CPM-154, S30V, AEB-L, Elmax, 440C and so on... Every steel I just listed can make a great knife that is plenty tough for pretty much anything you can throw at it, short of using them as a pry-bar. Obviously some steels are better suited for certain applications, but it mostly depends on the blade's geometry and it's heat treatment, which are probably the two biggest factors when it comes to designing a knife for a specific intended purpose(s) such as for a kitchen knife, sushi knife, hunter, chopper, camp knife, EDC/utility, fillet knife etc etc. Of course there are some exceptions with certain "extreme" tool or stainless steels being made for very specific tasks. But that whole line of thinking that only carbon steels can make a good knife is pretty much from around the mid 20th century when our market was flooded with tons of Chinese made knives that were made from cheap stainless steels and given subpar heat treatments. So anyway, don't be fooled by that because now days there are plenty of great stainless and tool steels that make great knives when given a proper heat treatment.

21 degrees and 1200 grit is just right for the kitchen. Unless as he said, it's for fine slicing at which point I've gone as far down as 15 degrees and a one micron finish. Anyone who strops really should try a power strop.

And if you don't have a belt sander handy the rough bottom of a ceramic cup or even plate will do the job, heck even the top a car window will help you out in a pinch and I'm talking about hair popping sharp from an old butter knife kinda sharp. Do a cheap, reliable sharpening methods vid.

You're a master knife maker and you call the first stage "honing". That's simply not true, and you should know terminology better than that. What you're talking about is plain old sharpening. "Honing" is what you do with a honing steel. You use it to straighten bent sections that occur along the edge after you use the knife for a while. If honing works, you don't need to sharpen the knife. If you sharpen the knife, you do not need to hone it until it stops cutting well. You sure as heck can't hone a knife with a belt sander. It's tough to take someone seriously when they don't know the most basic terminology.

EXACTLY! Honing is done AFTER sharpening. I have made hundreds of knives (mostly folders) and I thought I was the only one who noticed the incorrect terminology. "Step by Step Knifemaking" by David Boye is the best book ever written on the subject of making (straight knives) AND sharpening ever written. I still have my original first edition I read in 1980. ANY new knife maker should read it.
