This is by FAR the best sharpening video I’ve seen. Exactly what I was looking for.

Thank you for your complete and clear explanation! I was trying to sharpen a planer blade today with my new honing guide and was unsure on how to use it correctly. Now, after watching your video I am better prepared for tomorrow!! 😂 Thank you again

Well done! My sharping process is very similar to yours. Even down to using a small hammer for adjusting the blade.

"I see a little silhouette of a man Scaramouche! Scaramouche! can you do the fandango?" It's like woodworking with Freddie Mercury! I love it and am now a humble fan of the channel. You rock! take it easy my friend, best wishes to the moustache! Tom🙂

Quick question. Lie-Nielsen is saying "Do not use diamond stones with the Lie-Nielsen Honing Guide". Yet you are recommending to use them? Thanks Greg

I’m sure it wears it down a bit, but I don’t think it’s a deal breaker.

Hi, Thanks for making this video, it's really great! I have a question, though... Just recently I bought the Veritas Side Clamping Honing Guide, but I'm having some issues, using it. I have a few older chisels, where the primary bevel has been sharpened by hand, poorly, so they're pretty much off... Now, shouldn't I be able to reestablish the primary bevel, using the Honing Guide, without having to use a grinding machine, like the Tormek, for example? Using the Honing Guide, I can't get it to hone the bevel square... I'm doing what I can to keep even pressure, make sure the chisel is well clamped in the guide, but no luck, the bevel is not being honed square... Could this be a faulty guide, or what's the problem here? Thanks again for the video. Have a great day. Cheers.

It’s a little hard diagnosing the problem without seeing it, but if you’re reshaping an out of square chisel it will look weird until it’s fully reestablished a primary bevel. Did you the entire surface sharpened?

@@StarrWoodworks - Hi and thanks for your reply. Yes, it will look weird until I fully reestablish the primary bevel, so I kept going, until I have the primary bevel reestablished, but at that point the chisel were out of square, it was really noticeable, looking at it across. Thank you. Looking forward to your reply.

Great video dose the edge of the plane blade have to be square to the side of the blade? I always have a tough time making it square.
@StarrWoodworks Жыл бұрын
it's best if it's square, but you can adjust the blade in the plane a bit to account for it being off.

I've just mixed up my first batch of HoneRite Gold and it's very cloudy. It has a sort of scummy head sitting on top. Is that normal? Do I just have to let the stuff settle for a while? Great vid mate - subbed!

Has happened to me. Has it settled yet? Mine is pretty clear like yellow Gatorade.

What grit stones are you using on your setup? Thanks.

I use DMT's extra course and extra extra fine, but sometimes I even with I had their extra extra course to speed things up!

How long did it take to make the moustache?🤔

Lot's of interesting opinions in this video. I'd take issue with several. First of all, almost no one uses a stone or plate to reestablish the primary bevel. That is usually done on a grinder or a flat spinning disc. Second the ruler trick is a great way to speed up the sharpening of the plane blade. Without it you must ensure the entire back of the blade is flat. Third stropping is not necessary. You can achieve the same results with a very fine stone and you don't have to remove the blade from the honing guide. Just use a 1000 grit first and then 8000 or 16000. Lastly yes a 27.5 degree angle is greater than the primary angle but that is too shallow. It doesn't leave enough metal behind the bevel and the edge will break down faster. You are much better off to use a 30 or 35 degree secondary bevel.

Why don't you have normal plane I mean bevel down plane?? Thank's for your Time. Alex

They’re cheaper and I like how simple they are.

Who has watched “all” the videos online”, & now shows a video like this…….there is more about correctly sharpening, but this is not it.
