How to Sharpen Kitchen Knives with Whetstone - Sharpen Dull Knives with Keenbest Sharpening Stone
Keenbest Whetstone Kit: amzn.to/3Btz42I
Keenbest Whetstone 400/1000 Grit: amzn.to/3wWsi1G
Whetstones are really handy to have around when knives need sharpening. And what I have in this video are a couple of stones from Keenbest. If you've never used a whetstone before, keep watching because I'll show you how to prepare and use them so you can get your knives super sharp!
This Keenbest kit actually comes with everything you'll need including items to help maintain the stones. You'll get two stones that are double sided and quite a few other tools including a leather strop. There's a green stone with 400 and 1000 grit and a reddish stone with 3000 and 8000 grit. This kit also comes with a flattening stone to keep the surfaces even. If you notice any dips in the whetstone just run this across the top until it's flat again. There's also a small white stone which I think is also used to help keep the whetstone surfaces flat. Over time you may find that these will come in handy.
For each whetstone, there's a rubber gasket that should be attached before use. This rubber seal will hold the stone in place during sharpening. But also included is an anti-slip wooden base that holds the stones off the table at an angle. There's also a little attachment for knives that will help keep the knife at the correct angle for optimum sharpening.
Before using the whetstone, it needs to soak in water for about 10 to 15 minutes. I'll usually flip it once but when the bubbles stop it's ready to use. To sharpen a knife, place the blade down and slide it away from the sharp edge. Putting pressure on the blade as you slide it away from you. Then release pressure on as you bring it back down. You'll also want to use your free hand to press down on the blade while sliding up. Then no pressure as I bring it back to the bottom.
I'm starting with the 400 grit side which is great for really dull knives. Always start at the tip and slide it along the full length of the blade. This way I sharpen the entire edge in one sweep. After several repetitions turn the knife over and repeat on the other side. Usually I'll carefully check the blade for sharpness. Then repeat the process again using the 1000 grit side. This side will further fine tune the edge to get this knife really sharp!
However, 1000 grit is still pretty course. But I'm still repeating the same process of sharpening one side and then the other. After a few passes I'll go over the knife again using the finer 3000 and 8000 grit whetstone. At that point the knife should have a really nice sharp edge on it. I like to immediately check the sharpness and if I don't feel it's sharp enough I'll repeat it again with the 3000 or 8000 grit stone.
When done rinse off the whetstones and let them completely dry before storing them. You can get the complete Keenbest whetstone sharpening kit or just one of the stones by itself. But I highly recommend the full kit because it will have everything you need to keep all your flat edge knives sharp. Aren't you supposed to get the stone submerged in water for about 15 minutes?

The little white block is a type of stone referred to as a Nagura stone or cleaning stone and is used to clean embedded metal particles from the stones during and after sharpening. The green chromium oxide goes on the smooth side of the leather to draw an even edge onto the steel. Using it on the rough side can often dull the edge by rolling your edge negating all you’ve accomplished on the higher grit stones.

Hmmmm, I'm new to this and from all the videos I've seen your technique would be for stropping not the actual sharpening, which is the blade to the stone both on the forward motion and back motion, basically the knife's edge never leaves the stone's surface.

Anything 5,000 and above is considered polishing. You can go as high as you want. If they're in bad shape start with 400. If they're relatively sharp already start with 1,000.

Dang two years late but uhhhh 😂 the lower the grit the more it takes off so you use the lower grits to get the shape n all n the smaller grits to refine it sharply

I don't know what you mean by floating your stone , but the black stone is to level your sharping stones and the white one is to clean them. That's the only thing I can come up with lol . I'm going to order mine from a Chinese place that my wife found. They sell a nother kit also.stones are the same but everything else is a little different.

You unfortunately missed a lot of sharpening basics when developing this video. One keen issue is the creation of a burr on the edge before progressing to the other side and why. One problem with your technique is, it can begin in failure and the person may never reach that razor edge no matter how hard they try. Great videography and voice but bad instruction set. I would suggest watching how the professionals use this set of stones and patterning a new video around that. BTW the white stone should be a cleaning stone, not a stropping compound which is usually green in color.

How "can it begin failure"? Seems you dont have a clue otherwise you would have answered the people who have already asked you how you do it.
@oTouchMe
@oTouchMe 5 ай бұрын
Your technique creates a problem on the tip of the blade. By only pushing away on the blade you have missed sharpening the tip. You need to cover the whole blade not just some parts when sharpening or else it creates a bigger problem later.

Why would you make an instructional video on something you know very little about? I have to assume some sort of positive intent, but you have got most of the basics wrong. I wish I could flag this as misinformation.
