This was really helpful, thank you! I'm trying to essentially learn the DDS and shelving books overnight for a job offer. Thanks for this great video!

Wow! I can't believe I made that comment almost a decade ago. Yes, I got the job! I ended up working at 2 libraries for a total of 5-ish years, but I'm in a completely different field now! @@MrTod1984

You show 636.75 coming before 636.73 when you replaced the book. That might confuse some people.
@jkotynek6 жыл бұрын
Good point. However, I think the Instructor was creating a real-life situation where an untrained book handler such as a Patron who is clearly unfamiliar with the Dewey Decimal System; would place a book back on the shelf in the wrong place. This is also a trick an instructor does to see if his or her audience is paying attention. Well done!

Brenda Scheiner - "You show 636.75 coming before 636.73 when you replaced the book That might confuse some people." YES!! I work at a library and I noticed that right away (glad someone else did!) - there is no excuse for making such a mistake. I can understand a newbie doing that, but in an instructional video????

he wasn't really focusing on those books but the ones after them. I can see your point though.

636 identifies animals. Dogs are 636.7. Anything beyond 636.7 defines types of dogs.

how do you know that 636.7 is dogs? is there some kind of chart orrr

What happens if the decimal number is the same? Do those get shelved alphabetically?

I don't know what I find funnier. The fact that I willingly clicked on this video, or the fact that I find this topic genuinely interesting. Also, you put 75 before 73. That is pretty much the opposite of what you were telling us to do later on, and is driving me slightly crazy.

This is helpful but,it would be even more helpful, if you had zoomed in closer to the call numbers.

The 600 category is Technology, isn't it? The 500 category is science. Wouldn't dogs be listed in the 500's?
@paul.a.clayton66404 жыл бұрын
Domesticated animals do fit under "applied science". Biological study of dogs would be somewhere in 599 (mammals). (I miss working as a page.☹)
