For everyone one asking, a chassis alone can run close to 5k, at least for a high end model. Then google a 150cc 2stroke engine used or new from any Moto manufacturer and try to find one for less then 1k. I have seen some used shifters go for 2k but nothing capable of capturing a pole position. Your average used race ready shifter cart is going to run close to 5k. Asking about or trying to compare your 8hp 212 predator to a 125cc 2stroke shifter or even TAG is like comparing a Vespa to a R1. A 212 predator is going to top out at 40mph no matter what you do to it unless you start forking of over cash for race parts and even then it won't touch the shifter in a race. In comparison a 125cc shifter will do 60mph in 3.4 seconds and top out somewhere between 118-120mph on a long straight, IF you can clinch your ass cheeks tight enough to not crap yourself in the process.

These are professional grade racing karts. People dont just make these they are factory made by karting companies. Racers usually sell them on a website called e-kartingnews. With a little searching you may be able to find a near by organization of racers and be able to race these karts.

Good video and explanation, but you left out one very important aspect of shifting a shifter kart, and that is throttle-bliping between shifts. I know it is quite difficult to explain to a novice, but it is quite important, especially if you want the transmission to last any length of time. You CAN simply bang the lever, either up or down, but the trans will fail rather quickly if this is done repeatedly. You must increase rpm's for downshifts and decrease for upshifts by use of the throttle.

Not a stupid question at all. Most all shifter karts are either started with a strap or pop started with a buddy giving you a push. There's no starter for these (that I have ever heard about anyway). Hope this helps.

That still is not a complete explanation of how to shift, didn't mention that you must lower the throttle input while shifting so that the gear changes go in smoothly and quickly and without destroying the gearbox, it's not just WOT and pulling the lever hard.

This is a moto shifter it's the slowest of the lot. It uses a 125 MX motor where as an ICC of that vintage has a purpose built kart engine carb is out the front exhaust in rear of head. There is also an 80cc version for kids.

True, there is a considerably larger "instant" load while shifting down but whether you use the clutch shifting down or not, there is still going to be a fairly large load on the gears. Unless you are blipping the throttle and rev matching while downshifting and using the clutch, the downshifts will have the same load on the gears with or without using the clutch. Plus, if you are downshifting, you should be braking as well.

Shifters are insanely fast and require much more effort from the driver than the touch and go karts. Both are a blast but if you are new to the sport I would recommend the touch and go karts.

You can set up the Mychron (the data acquisition on the steering wheel of the kart), if it is a high quality system, to show you what gear you're in. My kart did not have this capability so I did it mostly by feel.

Hey dude, thanks for the comment. It is never too late to get into karting! You should start in Tag JR. karts and work your way up. You'll get good experience in the TAG Jr. series and have a blast. Do a good search for TAG karts and it should take you to some good sites. Birel, Tony Kart, CRG, and Top Kart are all top of the line brands. Find kart tracks around you and do some practices and then some races, etc. It's not cheap but it is a blast. Hope this helped.

another thing to mention is, the throttle usage during shifting. shifting up: lift the throttle when you shift. shifting down: away from the throttle

All the time and yes. I think a Honda CR125 shifter needs a top end rebuild for every 10 hours of drive time. This is, of course, if you're racing it. If you're just driving it for fun, you could probably run a richer tune and get 20 or so hours before you're risking damage from a worn out piston. Keep in mind, 30 minutes of drive time per track day is more than most people even want to do, these things are incredibly physically demanding to drive and if you aren't in very good athletic shape you'll probably have a hard time doing more than 10 or 15 minutes.

Just an added note. A good majority of shifters have a timing mechanism between shifts. You do need the clutch to get moving at first, however, a timing mechanism acts as a clutch for every other shift by temporarily putting the engine in neutral. That is why you don't need a clutch during races. You just bump the shifter, the engine goes to neutral while the gear ratio changes, and it kicks back on. This all happens within a matter of milliseconds.

I race karts and I also work for a karting shop called Acceleration Kart Racing. We sell new and used karts but mainly only new. You can find many karts online for sell and usually get a good deal on them. The motor seen in this video is a 125cc motor with a 6 speed manual sequential gear box. All they are is a dirt bike motor that has been modified in a few ways to fit on a kart.

To get a fairly good feel for the prices of used go karts, both shifter and non-shifter, go to eBay and search for "Go Karts High Performance". There will always be non high performance recreational and other wierd karts mixed in, but there are generally several of whatever type you might want. I recently sold a shifter kart successfully on eBay to a buyer who was 1,000-miles away. (The shippping added approx $500 to the buyer;s cost)

Before you start karting try it out. Your local race track should have Racing karts they'll let you try out for around $50. If you really like it buy a used kart, Make sure it is a brand you've herd of. Remember that there is a reason why it is a common brand. I would recemend Arrow Kart. They are really easy to tune and are beautiful to handle

Clutch is only used in the start of a race. Release the clutch til it starts pulling, while holding full throttle and brake for the fastest start in races. When shifting you come slightly of the throttle for å short period and pull it in to its next gear. Downshifting is usually only done when braking so no throttle or clutch would be applied in that kind of situation.

So I'd assume you can stall in these shifter carts then? And how easy would it to shift from a high gear and accidentally missing neutral and going in to 1st? I imagine you would have to drive these carts similar to a regular car going to a stop? Downshift to neutral then back to first again?

Get a tag. Karts are very different from four wheelers. Also how old are you? Im saying this because if you want to race a shifter its 16+ for a 125cc. And also the 80cc shifter karts are hard to find, and need a TON of maintenance. They need a new top end about every 3 hours of riding..

cheaper than a brand new dirt bike and better competitions as well. Budget $10K and you'll set yourself up with a secondhand kart, trailer and tools as well as a licence. After that, the racing is up to you ;-)

only 1 kart has paddles called rotax max DD2 it got 2 years. The left paddle is first gear and the right is second. But on hsifter karts you have a system called mechatron F1 and then you have paddles

you don't hold the clutch while moving. you just release the throttle a moment and pull the lever, when youlift off the clutch slips allowing a gear change.
