Film Camera: Canon A1 with a 50mm f/1.4 Canon lens -- FujiColor Superia 200
Video Camera: Canon 5D3 with a 35mm Summicron F2 (1970) Leica lens
This is our first STORY in our new Snippet/Story style and we are so very excited to share it with you.
This week we tried to weave the beautiful experience of film photography with a bit of a how-to-video with the hopes of inspiring you to get out and capture your environment.
The entire experience of shooting film from choosing your film stock, to manually loading the film, to the sexy sound of winding the film after each photo, well it all just begs you to slow down, to focus on the moment at hand, and take it all in and then... the most important part... to stay present. No checking how the photo turned out, no re-taking the selfie, not even the need to see how many likes it got. Nope, a film camera gives you the luxury of hoping that you captured the moment and letting that be enough.
And while I can go on and on about the lessons that film has already taught me - and this was just my first roll ! - the main thing that making this story taught me is how lucky I am to have a partner as patient and thoughtful as Lou! His work ethic is unlike anyone I have ever met and the passion he pours into creating these beautiful moments each week never ceases to amaze me.
I'm grateful for this week's video for reminding me of time spent: hanging at second hand camera stores, capturing special moments with dear friends, and enjoying perfect moments of summer when you feel surrounded by love.

I believe that most digital cameras have manual modes that you can adjust these settings (aperture, shutter speed, etc) to experiment with before you start shooting expensive film.

Indeed. For me part of the allure is that you only have 36 shots on a roll. That forces you to be frugal and much more thoughtful. With film I think you tend to make pictures rather than take pictures.

MrMfloor Yes there is: the photos will last for 'ever'. Take a digital Photo and it will be gone within 10-15 years. Take a photo with an analogue and it may last over a 1000 years. Do you have all of your digital photos taken 25 years ago? Don't think so.
@jonathanwalters5739
@jonathanwalters5739 7 жыл бұрын
TheRobertSt The archival quality is more along the lines of 100 years under proper storage conditions, not 1000 years. Also, that is for silver based medium, and in the colour development process, all the silver is replaced with dye, so again, the archival quality of colour film doesn't quite hit even the more reasonable 100 year mark.

My dad has an unused Canon AE1 that had been sitting around for years. I just threw a new battery in it and it was good to go!! I did have to watch some videos on how to use the thing because I do have digital and everything, but as far as the Canon goes, I just leave the f stop in A mode and let the camera decide on the scene. But it is great fun shooting film!! :D

@@marianolopez101 haha it's possible but I mean, being a photographer that specializes in film/instant film isn't that wild of an idea. I know for a fact that many photographers freelance solely using film. a lot of people want their special event captured both digitally, and on the film they look at all of their older relative's special events on. so like, hiring a polaroid instant film photographer for your wedding isn't completely unheard of.

I think I agree with many of the comments on here. This is a beautiful story and it is wonderful to see such young people getting so involved in film. Also, from a technical point of view they explained it clearly, simply and accurately. I think the girl said near the start that she always winds on the film after she takes a shot. I guess this is so she is always ready to take the next one. I would suggest this is not really a good idea as it leaves the shutter springs under tension and over a period of time they can weaken which will affect the shutter sped accuracy. Probably best to wind on just before the next shot. But, I absolutely loved this video and enjoyed seeing the fun and excitement being demonstrated. Well done guys.
@WildWeRoam
@WildWeRoam 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and for the tip! We actually heard that from a few other comments after shooting this video and have since switched to winding right before taking a photo--which is better for the camera but also leads to a lot of moments where we forget that the camera isn't wound yet, so it takes some getting used to I guess! But it's nice to be doing things properly and taking care of the camera so I'm sure we'll get used to it soon!! Hope your having a nice weekend : )

I'm curious about the type of film you've used since the pics looks quite contrasty and vivid (though where I live I "only" have access to 3 makes of film, Kodak 200,Fuji 200 and illford black and white 100).Anyway great work and storytelling, subscribed right away!

We've been using fujicolor 200 or 100 a lot lately but would really like to start experimenting with other options soon : ) so if you have any absolute favorites please let us know. It might look more contrasty than what your photos look like because of how the colors shift when they get scanned, edited, and uploaded--basically we just try and keep things as real and good looking as possible but its tricky with youtube and all these programs ; ) Can't wait to hear what you think of the next photography video we shoot in the coming weeks!

There's just something so special about photographs...I remember dumpster diving, and finding people's old 35mm photos of pets and family - and crying. You can see the happiness that - or imagine the happiness that those quick moments in time brought someone - the memories that it served. That's why I love photography personally, because I always remember how I was feeling when I took a photo, and I love that sense of finality a photo has. Everything was still for a split second in time, nothing changed, and it's there for us to see, forever. Beautiful video - outstanding.

If you're starting off, start with black and white film. It helps because you learn how to use your lighting, contrast, grain, and it's a huge help. If you can develop your own film do it. It's a stressing process buts it's honestly my favorite part.

Nice vid, I started photography back in the 1960's and have loved the creativity it gives you. Although I stopped using 35mm film in the mid 1980's and went digital I still liked the control I had on 35mm film camera's in manual mode. To get a little more hands on photography I purchased a used Canon 1ds mk2 and a Nikon D2H during lockdown and enjoy the old 35mm film camera style and operation of these early 2004ish digital camera's. I only paid £300 for the pair and to think the body of the Canon was around £7,500 in 2004 and the Nikon was around £3,000 blows my mind. It doesn't matter how good or bad you are at photography it is the enjoyment and creativity you get from it. Remember that split second it take to capture that image can be with you to enjoy for the rest of your life. Like n Sub look forward to watching more of your vids.

When you're focusing, really try to move your focusing hand so your palm is under the lens, cradling it. The way you're doing looks so cack-handed and doesn't support the camera well so especially at low shutter speeds you'll be introducing camera shake.

This video makes me feel like a dinosaur... I have boxes of photographs and some old film laying around but much prefer digital... cost cost cost. Cool though I guess, it seems like ancient technology to some, but I think most ppl were still shooting through about 2002 or so... the early digitals 99-02 were bad, convenient, but bad. Even disposables were better. IT would be cool to see somebody shooting on a .6 mp 640x480 digital camera! "and this is how you oversharpen in paint shop pro!" If you are truly interested, def find somebody with a darkroom...that's part of the fun and process! Never had my own, but we had one in middle school/high school in the 90s.

One tech thingy for film beginners to know - because there's no stabilisation, when shooting handheld keep to a shutter speed no slower than the focal length of the lens, i.e 60th @50mm, 125th @135mm, 500th @400mm etc. Nice video. KZbin has lots of young people discovering the value of film. I was just on a walking holiday in the Albanian Alps and bought a Pentax LX especially. I saw an older German lady with Pentax MX, and young hipster with an Olympus OM20 (I'm about halfway between). Another point about old SLRs is they open up a world of excellent cheap prime lenses on ebay. The Pentax 50mm f1.7 for about EU35 for example. Get one in good condition and you'll get lens quality of something costing 10x as much new - and they built them to last is those days!

EdBareff no it is not. Noise is the lack light hitting the sensor on digital cameras. Grain is the particles found in the film type. Grain is always the same because of the film type. Noise is never the same, and you never want noise for professional photos. Grain can be used professionally.

The stuff about aperture, shutter speed and depth of field is no different from a modern digital camera. It is related to the laws of physics. However, your modern digital camera may hide this stuff from you, although the more professional the camera is the less it is hidden.

No No No. On the A-1 you set the lens to green A (green circle on that old chrome nose 50/1.4) in Av mode you dial in the aperture value, camera automatically sets your chosen aperture and the appropriate shutter speed. In Tv YOU CHOSE SHUTTERSPEED, AND WITH THE LENS SET TO A, the A-1 automatically sets the aperture. There is also a Program mode where camera chooses both (notg recommended). That is why this is an AUTO EXPOSURE camera.

what a pity almost all such shops as shown later in the vid died thanks to all mankind went digital in the past decades - I shot analog in the 80s and 90s, went digital in early 2000s and now started analog again - with a 10 € minolta xd from flea market, coming with the 1.7 Rokkor lens; it is so much more fun compared to digital, which has it's place, too; but digital photos are more like 'expendable goods' compared to analog, which is kind of a lifestyle and art... good vid, thanks for that 15 minutes of good entertainment, I really much enjoyed. Hey Lou, as you've mentioned, that you're using ML-Raw workflow to produce your videos, have you considered using a flat picture profile (like tecnicolor cinestyle) & color grade your videos e.g. with filmconvert? I'm experimenting with that & the results are nearly equivalent with a fraction of time & diskspace needed in post compared to mlraw. Have you tried that? What are you guys doing now? See you, Philipp.

Hi Philipp! I thought I answered this one but maybe it didn't go through?
