This is an ancient technique I had forgotten. This was done a lot in the 50's and 60's. Essentially the 50mm lens works like a diopter attachment. I really enjoyed seeing the video. A cheap "eBay Studio" will do a good job of providing diffuse light, with continuous illumination or flash. BTW, your focus stacking trick is great, especially since I have the exact same camera. :)

If the bug is dead and not moving, you could just use longer exposures and natural light, avoiding the flash and diffuser setup. If natural light isn’t diffused enough, you might still want to use the diffuser. I’m suggesting this in case some viewers don’t have a flash.
@diaryofcreation582 Жыл бұрын
Totally 👍🏻 just takes a bit longer 😄

One thing flash does well is avoid softness due to vibration, especially at high magnification.

I literally have the 2 exact same lenses and am now frantically ordering a 77-52 mm coupling ring to try this! Great video! Question: Would stopping down the aperture of either lens increase the focal depth at all?
@zackarylefebvre9059 Жыл бұрын
Theoretically it should, even tho I never experimented with the technique myself... but physically speaking, it pretty much has to... but personally I'd probably just stick with whatever is sharpest aperture you find and then focus stacking them
@diaryofcreation582 Жыл бұрын
What I do is keep the front lens (the 50mm) wide open and I stop the zoom lens down to F7.1 or F8. However that is more because that's the zoom lenses optical "sweet spot" Unfortunately he problem with increasing the aperture for focal depth is you run into diffraction incredibly quickly at such high magnification which will end up reducing the sharpness of your image.
@diaryofcreation582 Жыл бұрын
Diffraction is your biggest enemy at high magnifications 👍🏻

People don't realize how easy it can be to achieve better results. They just simply don't try because many think it is hard to achieve good results. Very nice video! You just forgot to mention that camera and subject needs to be in fixed position during all shots, so the stacking software can combine photos properly.

Excellent video. Really enjoyed how you very simply attacked this particular problem of getting everything in focus and helping us to see how it is so easy to take very good pictures with some simple techniques. Gratifying to know too that I have all this equipment so I can easily do this myself. Now with the newest mirrorless cameras, focussed stacking is a lot easier although I think it started at the Nikon D810 or 850. I’m not sure, but anyways, that makes it a lot easier than moving the focussing ring each time yourself. But you need an AFS lens to do this and that’s what you were using. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Gerry.

Nice video! I just restarted doing some amateur wildlife photography and may need to try this. I live in north central Florida (USA) and we have no shortage of bugs 😃. When I was in high school, one of my science teachers used to make spectacular photos of spiders. He would catch them in a small jar and then drop an ether-soaked cotton ball inside to anesthetize them. He would then carefully pose them on some natural materials like dead leaves or small branches and shoot images with closeup lenses. He would then release the unharmed spiders back into the wild.
