Your camera lens is essentially a magnifying glass concentrating the sun's rays onto your shutter blades or sensor. It does not take long for the sun to cause serious damage to your camera when pointed directly at the sun. If you want to be able to safely photograph the sun you need at least a 15-stop ND filter. Our Kolari Pro IRNDs are the best on the market and also protect against infrared light which is overlooked by many other ND filters.

A telephoto lens is actually better for your camera than a wide angle, the reason being that it spreads the image of the sun over a larger portion of the sensor/shutter, as opposed to a wide angle which focuses it on a very small portion of the sensor/shutter. At least, this is the case when shot with maximum aperture. You can test this yourself by shining a light on a wall and taking pictures of it.

I have a camera that has been up for over two years with a 1.8mm lens, no damage from the sun at all.

Are all ND filters solar filters or not?

The difference is the strength of the filter, solar filters are much darker than the average ND filter and are designed specifically for solar photography.

Not all ND filters are rated for solar photography. To safely photograph the sun, you need at least 15-stops of light reduction to prevent sun damage to your camera. Additionally, ND filters are not rated for solar viewing, so you shouldn't look directly at the sun through a camera's optical viewfinder or with your eyes even if using an ND filter.

@@kolarivision1674 I have a 10 stop and a 6 stop that I can stack. I know from research Kolari ND filters do exceptional in the visible light and IR light spectrum. Most other brands do not do well in IR. I didn’t know if your filters were also corrected for solar where others brands might not be. However that brings up the question what is the spectrum of solar light. Is it not just visible?

@@sebastiang7183 While the sun emits wavelengths of light ranging from tens of nanometers to thousands of nanometers, due to atmospheric absorbance, it's nearly a 50/50 mix of infrared and visible light that reaches us with a small portion of ultraviolet light making it through.

Its true solar-rated filters is a must for solar photography but this and your other promo video are utter BS. You say we can burn shutter in 0:20, start focusing sun at the shutter and 0:25 and the fact at 0:30 on close-ups you are burning anti-reflection foams and NOT the shutter. You don't need to degrade your image by lying. Yes filters are important but you can NOT burn through titanium or steel shutter blades in mere seconds or even hours if you stopped the lens down as you would (you can and will burn aperture blades in minutes though). You know this, because otherwise you'd burned the shutter, without resorting to video editing trickery... If sensor exposed only for like 1/1000 second of a time maybe, you can't burn your sensor too. On a DSLR, you'll burn the mirror mechanism and focus sensor, but it wil take many many seconds, you'll permenantly damage your eyesight before that. On Liveview or EVF, a few seconds of exposure to sun won't do a damage the sensor, provided lens is stopped all the way down to f/16. Even at f/16, 1/8000 shutter is not enough though so if you are putting an ND filter, why not put one properly designed for solar photography is a valid argument. But fearmongering that you'll burn through titanium? Thats laughable.
