How to Shorten a Separating Zipper

What works for me is to Mark the overall desired zipper length, then remove the 1st two zipper tabs above your mark by using needle nose pliers to securely grab just the end of each individual tab to be removed and while securely holding the zipper, pull straight out, the tabs pull off fairly easily. Then, use the pliers to grip & remove the stop tabs. The stop tabs are like a tiny clamp that is pinched in place and need to be gripped from the sides, so as not to pinch it closed even tighter while gripping to remove it. In order to make room for the pliers to grip the stop tab by it's sides, one zipper tab below the stop tab will need to also be removed. Grip from the sides, and pull straight out just like the zipper tabs. Now while still holding the stop tab with the pliers, use a small sewing machine flat screwdriver to insert into the stop tab and twist to slightly open the gap enough to slide in place at your new length mark on the zipper and now grip it with the pliers, top & bottom so as to crimp it in place. I use a small tack hammer with the zipper placed on a hard surface to tap the tab a little tighter. Trim the excess length & use heat, or by some means, seal the cut end to prevent unraveling. Wasn't clear to me how you used the wire cutters, so video not helpful at that point sorry to say. Seems obvious one cuts from the top, the teeth are the issue for me. Did like the point about zip repair kits giving new top clamps, though if whipping I think thicker button hole thread would work better?

+Vida Holmes cutting off the teeth isn't too difficult, but the pieces do go flying and I didn't want to risk damaging our camera lens due to flying debris. The tips and angles I suggested cutting at are the ones I used in doing my own.

You could also (carefully) wedge the zipper top from an old zipper or the one from the top of the zipper that you're cutting.

This video is very helpful to me. I have already asked for help plus watched 3 videos about shortening a zipper. After watching the first video actually *show* the person wrenching off the unneeded zipper teeth, it is very clear to me why you didn't make us go through watching you wrench the teeth off, too. You explained the process very clearly. Plus I was having trouble finding information on how to shorten a plastic zipper which surprised me. There are a lot of plastic zippers out there! Thank you.

i installed separating zipper with slider facing down (toward lining oops) short of reinstalling could a slider be removed and turned over to face other way? ie does a slider work in either direction? the pull, not the slider, would be damaged but could just stitch a makeshift stop as shown? thanks so much! renee

The separating zipper I am using have coil teeth! How do you shorten that?

For that, I would do a whipstitch over the coil where you want it to end at the top (each side individually, not zipped up) and then just cut it with your paper scissors above that point. Usually the coil is made with plastic and can be cut off.

probably not, but then you have to be careful until that step is completed. I've definitely made the mistake of fooling with my zipper after cutting off the stops and pulled my tab completely off and then it's a pain in the neck to get it back on the zipper. I live and learn all the time too. ;)

Removing the teeth from a metal zipper is not fot the faint of heart. Simply pulling at them with a pair of pliers will make you give up. You need the proper tools including a good quality pair of side cutters, safety glasses, and a work area far away from anything delicate. The garage workbench is best. A good quality metal zipper will be designed to keep its teeth securely, so you must have experience working with metal to be anywhere successful without destroying the rest of the zip. First practice with an old throwaway zipper before attempting this procedure. The video makes it look simple. It is not.
