I learned to use a V between my fingers for aim. Hold the mirror up to your eye looking through the peep sight, the hold you fingers, or thumb and and pointer finger, at arms length in a V. Place your target in the notch of your fingers, then aim the light through directly at the target through your fingers. You'll see some light spill pm your fingers and hand surrounding the "target."

Very good information thanks, the end part with the signalling was actually quite amazing, definitely something worth having, and with the magnifying glass for fire lighting, good idea. Cheers.

So glad I watched this series to the end! I have never even considered the need to aim the signaling mirror outside of getting the sunlight. These videos were all very helpful! 👍👍

I like how you have your pace beads on the compass lanyard. I think I will change mine over to my compass lanyard, thanks for the great idea!

Good video. Nice work and great explanations. The scales on the side of your compass are used in conjunction with map scales. It is possible to purchase USGS maps that are marked off using Universal Trans Mercator systems. For large areas a 1:50000 scale map. For slightly smaller areas 1:25000. The 1:25000 will be more detailed. As a 1km sq will be twice the size of the 1:50000. Either one of these is very handy to have for your area where you like to hang out in the woods. I was able to purchase an entire set that covers the entire State of Texas a few years ago. When I go hiking somewhere I look up the area and print myself off a physical map I use a GPS to some extent but like to have a back up especially when I am in an unfamiliar place.

Thank you so much Josh. I appreciate you tuning in and hopefully we won't be in a situation to ever need this for sure. My guess is we would be able to see ourselves through in most situations just because of our mentality and skillsets:) Take care my friend!

That is definitely an attention getter. It works well over distance.

I remember hearing someone (a know-it-all type) discounting the use of a compass mirror for such purposes, saying that it's too small. Here's evidence that it's not and any means of signalling (say) a search and rescue aircraft is better than none.

Another great video, Matt. What brand and model is the compass that you were using and what would you recommend for a novice bush crafting?

Thank you so much for your kind words Vance! This one is a Suunto MC2 and it has been an excellent compass for me. I recommend this wholeheartedly. This type of compass (map compass with a sighting mirror) is all I tend to use these days. I have owned different brands but always come back to this one as it has never let me down. I figure if you are depending on it to get you back, I want the best I can afford. These are not too expensive online at all. $50.00 give or take. I hope that helps my friend.

Good demonstration. Too bad you don't have a drone hovering at a high altitude filming the reflection. However, simply knowing how to utilize sunlight to your advantage by reflecting it in emergency situations is a good skill to learn. Thanks for sharing.
