How to Simulate a Crane with FEA

Great vid! Looks very simple to use, looking forward to experimenting on the community plan. I'm new to FEA so please excuse the dumb question: How can we tell if the crane broke? I guess the deflection animation would show this. If it doesn't break, is there a way to show how safe it is? For example, can the false colour be adjusted so the upper scale limit is the steel failure stress?

Hi Alex! You could theoretically check the v.Mises stress but having a stress over yield does not necessarily mean that the part will break. I would probably have to cover this in a separate video before writing a novel here ;-) As for the safety issue, you could define a safety factor safety by defining (yield stress/ von Mises stress) in the calculator filter in ParaView and everything below 1 would break. You can play with the formula to get a legend according to your needs!
