Jeff thank you so much! I have been practicing and I have progressed slowly. I have fully accomplished singing over the break. I am working on falsetto now and getting better. What songs do you know of or voices that we can practice with a song? For example I have been practicing with maroon 5 "what lovers do." Do you have any other suggestions? Again thank you so much. I have improved so much by listening and practicing with your videos!!! 😃😃😃

Thank you so much for your kind words! Sing what you love. Sing what inspires you. Sing the songs that YOU want to sing. That is what all this technique is about - having the skill set to do the music you want to do. If that leads you into the upper register. So be it, if not, that's fine too. Maroon 5 has plenty of music approaching that range. So does Sting and The Police, but the most important thing is to sing what you love. The technique is meant to facilitate your artistry. All the best! Jeff

@@JeffRolka I really appreciate your advice. It is not just about accomplishing something. It is about loving what we sing and singing what we enjoy! That matters much more than worrying about where I am on the vocal improvement journey. Thanks Jeff! I'm so glad I found you on KZbin. It really changed and helped my vocals at church. By the way the song by maroon 5 is more to practice a fun vocal thing. I'm married and do not agree with the content of the song haha! TMI I know. 😂

Worst practice in current vocal teaching is NOT training the falsetto, and integrating it throughout the range. It's been vilified, and thought or as "cheating " " HE "resorted" to falsetto. " The detached falsetto is considered worthless. Once it's trained, you lose the ability to separate it. Bjoerling claimed he couldn't sing falsetto. He entire voice was falsetto inflected! An example of successful integration!

Jeff, thank you so much for your videos and generosity. You have answered nearly all of the questions I have been having about the registers and more! I totally get what I am supposed to do in this video, but I've run into the problem (been fighing with this for a while) that I can't easily flip up into the falsetto. I can only kind of force it with a new onset, but there is no gliding up and flipping. Probably bad habits of singing to hard into the chest voice and taking it too high. I was wondering if you had a tip or an exercise for my problem. Thank you in advance and thank you for reading this long piece of text. Warm regards from Germany. You're the best!
@JeffRolka

Hello! Thanks for your kind words and question! Start with descending patterns. If in the past you have had the habit of forcing chest voice to or above the secondo passaggio you will have to create some new habits around the transition points of your voice. It will initially feel very light and possibly disconnected. As long as your voice is neither airy nor strained you will probably be using the proper muscle groups. I talk about this almost every week at my weekly live events, if you want more info or demonstrations consider dropping by. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYe2ooB9q6dsbJY Best, Jeff

@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka Жыл бұрын
You're talk about vocal fold adduction. The airyness comes from too much or too light of contact between the vocal folds. There are a lot of exercises for this, here are two places to begin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIqnhIuhesh3kM0 kzbin.info/aero/PL2mQP7sE6PHgDZbHwHzRwUf-HOWec-fgq

I'm a bass-baritone (you might even recognise my username by now! I've also become one of your Patreon supporters - it's only fair I think) and I like to dabble in the countertenor range as well as my modal voice; this video is very useful for that, more so than your one for baritones (at this stage of my progression, I hasten to add), especially the last exercise. I have a fairly decent reinforced falsetto now and can reach around about F5, though I still can't mix my modal production with my falsetto production as yet. I wonder if a practise for countertenors is something you have already, or if not, something you would consider adding? Thanks as always!
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words, and thank you for your support! I have not done a video for 'countertenors' because there isn't consensus on the usage of that term, and unlike other terms in singing that get used in multiple ways, the differences in usage here would result in vastly different approaches to the video. As you have identified as a bass-baritone, I wonder if you identify with the definition of 'countertenor' that I adhere to, which is a voice similar to Bon Iver's. Either way, thank you so much for your support!

Jeff hi, awsome video, I just want to ask you, I never used to sing and I just start singing and my chorus teacher say me i will be whit baritones, I get to the low notes and high notes easly, but i find more comfortable high notes, I have go whit a particular teacher and he say me I was a tenor becuase my timbre, that can happen? I can hit a E2 whit effort and I heard others tenors and they can't so I don't know what I am yet, If i have a tenor timber I can hit a E2??
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Thanks for your comment as well! Fach (one's voice designation ie., soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) is dependent on several factors. Overall range and timbre is taken into consideration, but the location of your primo and secondo passaggi are quite important in figuring it out. To answer your question though, yes, one could be a baritone but use a tenor's timbre. You would find that over time and as your voice developed your voice's strong suits would fall in different places in your range than a tenor's would, but that doesn't mean that you cannot affect a tenor's timbre. Best, Jeff

Evaluate your vowels carefully. Find those that align and compare them to those that don't. What traits are similar? What are different? In what way is it unpleasant? Is the intonation poor or erratic? There are so many ways we can sound poor, find what is working in your vocalizations and use that as a base to evaluate the rest! Jeff

Hey jeff, I got a lil problem. The excercise at 5:00, "glassy", what should I be doing? Letting my voice do what it wants and only supporting it with enough breath? Or should I try to guide it and make sure it crosses the registers clearly? When I do the former my voice breaks and I sound like the worst yodeler. Let me just say to the commenters that this is not a complaint about Jeff rolka, But a complaint to myself cus I know am doing the wrong thing. Your awesome jeff, sessions have been great. Thanks!
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. My answer in part depends on what you mean by 'crosses the registers clearly.' We certainly don't want any yodeling, no offense to yodelers, but that isn't going to make for a consistent sound. Look for the middle ground were yo get a seamless transition without 'trying' too hard. The more we try to consciously control our sound in these registers the more we get into intonation problems and ultimately strain. I hope that helps! Great question!!! Jeff

Hey Jeff, for the vowel pentatonic exercise at around 5:45, you do have a very "glassy" transition into head voice. Is it because you are throwing it back of the throat and mixing the resonance? I have these really hard breaks going into the segundo passaggio, which I'm having trouble mitigating.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 4 жыл бұрын
Nicely spotted! No, I'm doing that in order to illustrate that there is a transition there and the goal of the practice is to work that transition. If I sang it voce piena in testa, it's possible that some may confuse what I'm doing and defeat the purpose of the exercises presented in the video. As for your breaks transiting the secondo passaggio. You might have a look at this series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6Opm4d9jM6Ua7c It goes through the technique step by step in three videos. Best, Jeff

Hi Jeff, is it falsetto? because your sound is unified, sounds like a head voice, not sure what should I expect from myself.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that, Simon. You have hit exactly on a problem in vocal teaching, which is that there is little to no consensus on the use of many of the terms. Falsetto has come to mean a light airy sound that is produced almost anywhere in a given vocalists range. The term Falsetto, however, also (and I would argue more appropriately) identifies a range of male vocals that begins around a4 for baritones and b4/c5 for tenors. In this video, I am using the term falsetto in the latter context, and if we observe proper registration event practice, we get a unified sound. It is still, however, my falsetto range that I'm demonstrating. Great question! Jeff
@simong8527
@simong8527 3 жыл бұрын
@@JeffRolka thank you so much for detailed response 😊 I know that there are several opinions on head voice/falsetto and I was referring to the one that falsetto is airy and break. Head voice allows smooth transition because of cords "connection" and air pressure. Anyway regardless of terms I can practise it and I will ;) thanks again

Jeff why do we need to do the secondo passagio video first because we practise falsetto?
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 4 жыл бұрын
Because this video is using the word 'falsetto' to mean the actual range where the abduction of the vocal fold would occur in a singing voice that was practicing consistency across the several ranges of the voice. The technique for making a good transition into the falsetto range is dependent on making a good transition across the secondo passaggio. Hence, if one hasn't worked that out, it's likely that practicing this video would be frustrating or not as helpful as it could. Best, Jeff

Question: aren't your vocal chords coming together all the way to create the sound you're creating? I've heard, in falsetto, the chords don't come all the way together, making a bit of an 'airy' sound.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 4 жыл бұрын
It's airy when one is using a falsetto configuration of the vocal fold in the head voice range of the voice, where the vocal folds will produce a full voce piena in testa sound if adducted while elongated properly. Sorry that's a bit of technical jargon, but your question is really specific and requires that level of specificity! Best! Jeff

Hi Jeff! This is might be obvious one but do you have any suggestions on how to sound better in falsetto? Meaning, when I sing actual songs I’ve been getting feedback that while I’m technically hitting the note it just doesn’t sound good. And many times it’s not “hard” for me. So I think I’m killing it and then whoever singing for says your falsetto needs work but it’s not clear what exactly

Really hard to say. Can you be more specific? How is the sound not alright? Is it too airy? Too heavy? Too dull? How it sounds tells us much about what is not working. Best! Jeff

I'm a tenor and it's extremely easy for me to sing a A5 in head voice / falsetto but I can't go past a B4 in chest voice I need help.
