Thanks so much Mam for your excellent videos. Can you elaborate on Madyama Sruthi in Carnatic. I understand that it is shifting the Sa up to 5 semi tones. So if my current Sruthi is 1 kattai (C), I will be singing in 4 kattai (M1). Is my understanding right ? Also my understanding is that doing S - M1 - S at 1 kattai is not the same as Madyama Sruthi. Yes, there are actually 22 shruthis. For example, there are two shruthis around R1, two around R2 and so on. So, get 22 shruthis including SA and pa which are unchanging notes. But for all practical purposes, we take 12 swaras sthanas

Ma'm could you please let us know how do we ensure that we are singing in the correct shruthi when singing the mayamalavagowla in 3rd speed, I sing the right shruthi for all the 7 swaras in the 1st speed and always go wrong in the 3rd speed. Instead of calling it hash please can you call it sharp? Why does carnatic music define 3 varieties whereas only 2 really exists. Also need to point out that western scale is equally tempered whereas Indian scale has just temperament. These tuners are not really good for Indian music

The tuner has been suggested only keeping in mind for those who are not able to get a sense of the pitch and swara sthanas. It definitely has helped my students to get a feel of what the swara sthana should be like. If you are novice , this is a good app. For experts, this is not needed. They already have it in them

There are actually three varieties , it is only that certain combinations of swara sthanas cannot occur in the same ragam because they sound the same. If we had only two Ris and two Ga, then the possibilities are less. With three Ris and 3 Gas and so one, the possiblities are more. Moreover, the Origin of swaras goes to the sama veda which is a musical form of the vedas. So, they are not man made.
