I don't know if it's considered "breathy," but Sade (whom I love) has a very smooth and silky voice. It is breathy at times and almost never seems to have compression/twang.

No one can beat Julie London. Her signture song, "Cry Me A River" is a tour de forcé of a husky, smoky and extremely sexy voice.

Dan, if I may just comment, I think it's important, especially for beginning singers, not to try to sing a song breathy simply because it may sound breathy. Many times they may hear it as breathy on the recording when in fact, it is not. A song like Queen's "Crazy little thing called love" is a good example.

Hi Dr. Dan, Can you give advice: Do's /don't's, after such events as oral surgery &wisdom tooth removal? When is it a good idea to resume regular vocal exercise, are there any particular ones that will maybe be easier? Or Is breath support the focal point, if pain is at high levels? Please kindly share your thoughts? Thank you.

Alison Goldfrapp has an EXTREMELY breathy voice... it's in pretty much all of her songs, but the ones I think it's the most evident in are probably "Hairy Trees" and "Utopia."

Hey Dr. Dan. I sometimes use breathy tone in the upper register (well actually beyond that) because it's easier to hit the notes. I know how to compress my vocal folds so I can stop the breathiness but I sometimes choose not to. Is this damaging my voice? Should I stop doing it? I got quite worried when I read what you wrote about Mariah Carey " It's one of the reasons her voice is no longer what it used to be." Is there damage to my voice which I can't recover from? I don't feel like there is (my register, and control is constantly increasing bit by bit) but now I'm wondering... Also sometimes I can't help but sound breathy in the upper register because of phlegm or fatigue, until I swallow or take a sip of water (I always have room temperature-water with me when singing).

The breathiest singer of all time, eh? Donna Lewis, when she sang 'I Love You, Always, Forever'. Beautiful, that is. One of my favourites.

I like to add in some rasp and breathiness when I sing jazz songs for a stylistic effect. I hope I didn't cause my voice any issues by doing that in the past.

Dude my singing is always somewhat breathy. I'd like to know how not to sound breathy. Just sticking my tongue a little bit out is not helping.

Hey man, I had the same problems and I'm using these voice pipes; amzn.to/2aapjuV Have you tried them Dr Dan and what's your thoughts of it? I learned how to control my breathy tone and find the strength in my voice.

start off breathy. then transition out of breathy by raising your volume and singing louder. brandy is a breathy vocalist. she knows when to use it. and she raises and lowers her volume throughout the performance

My all time favorite is Elliot Smith. He literally whispers his songs in a musical and beautiful way. I have a question for Dr Dan: I think I use breathy tone almost all the time. Here a video of me singing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJPTfpSIlNucitU. I start singing about 0:35s. Is this "breathy tone singing"?? And if it is yes, am I in danger zone? Thanks a lot for your time! Yann
