I was actually trying a new for of singing....as a joke. So i deepened my voice, and i grunted. First i froze for a few seconds.....i was surprised. It was my first time doing it and it has been my dream....now i'm getting better, i don't strain and only if i force it it makes my throat sore...but i can make it smooth.

it’s normal for it to strain/hurt. i just wanna day it is not good for your voice but it’s a very talented and popular technique to use for certain notes or songs, so as long as you don’t do it as much. then your voice shouldn’t be as damaged as you think it might be ! this video is one of the best i’ve found so far, i’m trying to study and learn how to growl/squall so this helped a lot ! tysm~ 🥰

This is false. If you do growling correctly it doesn`t hurt. Dont listen to that crazy woman, if it would work like she says, no rock singer could do more than 1 concert a month.

I think you did the best you could with what you had. I like how you put out a disclaimer about how you are pure singer and I appreciate the honesty. I still think you did nice job at trying to convey what a singer would have to do to sound like this everyday. Your voice sounds beautiful as always and i tis always a joy to hear you. You have one of those voices that sounds so good it almost makes a person uncomfortable.I hope you don't take that the wrong way:-] Keep doing what you are doing. We are all benefiting from it. the most common mistake people make is trying to vibrate their vocal cords high. Growling is very akin to Tuvan throat singing except in short controlled bursts. It's a really hard thing to accomplish for people who never managed it before.

When I was 13 & started taking vocal lessons, my voice teacher told me never to growl cuz it damages your voice. So years later when I wanted to be able to do it, I couldn't --- still can't. Guess she trained me too good. I don't know. I wonder would I have developed the ability naturally over time had I not been formally trained, or is my voice just not designed for it. I come from a gospel background & it pisses me off that everyone else can do it with ease & when I try, my voice just clamps up & the air supply just cuts. My voice is like, "Uh uh. No M'am!!"

a slightly unconventional and dumb way of doing it, is to practice growling like a tiger. that huskiness you can get back in your throat, practice merging that with your natural singing voice in the bathroom (if you have good sound in there). that way you can regulate your volume and not strain by accident, if you struggle to do it. you kinda sound like the Cookie Monster at first but you get into it eventually. tell me how it goes????

@Dileesa (on my new account) If you, with your beautiful smooth voice, could scream like Brody Dalle (youtube distillers hunger, first link live at reading, 1:00 in when she scream 'don't go' is a good example), I would believe it possible and seriously start singing lessons! Even looking at covers on youtube, very few girls can actually do that...

Finally. Lol I've been trying to figure out if its called a growl or yell for yrs. i found a new term today to. A Squal. I know there's a difference in them all.. But you just confirmed im doing the growl correctly. Johnny gill is my fav artist who growls. His 80s to early to mid 90s growls are amazing. I learned by imitating him and would often wonder if I was doing it. Thank you for the confirmation with your examples. Great video. 👏👏👍😍

I do sing blues and R&B, soul and jazz actually all of them, and I would be lying if I said I didn't growl or rasp purposefully. But I know from experience that it is bad for your voice. There's a right way to sing In your chest voice like belting without hurting it, but growling and rasping hurts your voice no matter how lightly you do it because it is causing tension and friction in your vocals. There's just no way around it. I've tried, I wish there was though cause I love the sound!

I am in graduate school for speech-language pathology. I'm not sure if you're aware or not, but it can actually be pretty bad for your voice If you "growl" while singing, you're slamming your vocal folds together which can cause a lot of damage. Specifically, you should be worried about causing vocal nodules (you can learn more about them on Wikipedia or by doing a quick Google search). Be careful not to damage your voice! I wouldn't want you to ruin that beautiful singing voice you have! :)

If you start a note ( first word or Vowel in a verse with a (slight "mad - dog - growling- at- you- sound"... deep EAHHH or scolding your child verbally sound Eahh Eahh also the sound you make while gargling mouthwash or whatever) sound from your diaphragm to esophagus IN KEY... you will hit higher notes in the lyrics/notes of that verse because you are graduating your note from low to high ..A FIRST NOTE SUBTLE GROWL helps you to sing in full voice instead of falsetto. which is tinny......But it takes practice because you want the FIRST" ON KEY" growl note ( in every verse) to be inconspicuous AND VERY SUBTLE in most cases (unless you want to sing for example Bluesy and prolong the growl) It is much easier, but wrong (BIG MISTAKE) to start your first note HIGH because when you get to a higher part of that verse you sound tinny & fail to hit a high note correctly even causing your voice to break ..DISASTER !!...DO NOT START HIGH from your throat (sing lower from your diaphragm especially & ALWAYS the first note of the verse .Your song will sound THICKER & Richer IN FULL VOICE....THINK LOW subtle growl then GRADUATE TO HIGH>>> believe or not (especially you ladies)..Most ladies even SUPERSTARS can not sing low this will help you sing deeper on key LOW'S ..TRY IT ! ....

I came here after listening to Chris Young. I am a soprano and while I have a very high mid range my true chest voice is rubbish so I find this whole concept fascinating. Wynonna does it also. (You can tell I'm a country girl) I also am thinking of Christina Aguilera's style. I wasn't sure if it was called growling because I know there's some crazy styles out there (screamo, death metal etc) and I'm just wanting like a quick something when I hit a high note on certain songs.

Yah, growls puts pressure on our throat ... sometimes i find it helpful, i feel like i'm awakening my sleepy throat at the start of my vocalization.... but many times disconnects my upperchest voice from higher registers.... that's why i hate singing songs that require growls on some parts when have 13 more songs left to sing on a mini concert.....

Your voice is beautiful! But this is not how to get a rasp consistently or healthily. There are very little "how to rasp" for girls though so I applaud you! I definitely clicked on it because of that, and I need the help. This technique works if you are adding an affectation at only the beginning or ends of notes, but the rock rasp needs to be found through your head voice while closing the false chords above it. There shouldn't be any pain, and I believe (my opinion) that if you followed the technique shown in this video it will cause damage.
