Open throat in operatic singing (gola aperta) is creating the perfect acoustic tuning of the pharyngeal space to amplify the correct sets of formats of whatever vowel you are singing, so that your voice can be heard in a large hall without amplification. The hard part is not doing those adjustments, the hard part is relaxing everything that should not participate (shoulders, neck, jaw, lips, oral cavity). Also the larynx must not be lowered with the help of the back of the tongue (like the guy in this video does). The hyoid bone should remain in place when you lower your larynx.

so the differences between operatic, Broadway, and "other" types of singing drive me nuts.I have never had a voice teacher who satisfactorily explained the difference.

I would probably add the fact that just closing or opening the mouth ("un-hinging the jaw") also contributes to a more "closed" or "open throat", if you will.

Try doing your best santa claus voice and lauging in a low voice like santa. Then keep that sound and hold a note. This is not the way to sing high notes though as your larynx needs to raise when going high just to make you aware ❤️

Nice. And then you can combine: High tongue with a low Larynx and a high palate. #Challenge 😁However, what you call compression can be achieved as well sounding less constricted and even much louder with a more fine tuned glottis closing mechanism.
